- How to travel to visit the Cristo Rei statue in Lisbon, Portugal.
We spent an amazing day visiting this iconic statue that stands tall on the Almada side of the Targus river, looking over the city of Lisbon.
Watch to see how we crossed the river using the public ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas and then walked up to the sanctuary on top of the hill in Almada.
It is a cheap and easy day out in Lisbon and the views are spectacular from the sanctuary. The sanctuary is free to enter and it cost only €5 to ascend to the viewpoint at the Cristo Rei statue.
Travel on the local ferry and take a picnic lunch and you have an excellent and very cheap day out!

I also enjoy walking through residential areas - you get a much better feel for the town/city than just staying in the central areas
Agreed. There's always something new to see outside of the tourist zones. Everyday life alone! You can learn a lot about people by seeing how they live. 👍
Love your Christ the redeemer photo collection.
It's so cool that Lee has been to 3 of them... and we'll be on the hunt for more! - Mandy
Thank you so much for actually showing how to use the via gem card at the ferry station😊
You are most welcome. It's so useful that you can use it on so many different forms of transport. 👍😁 ~ Lee
Right??? They’re so helpful honestly!
You had a nice weather there, it’s very enjoyable ! Thanks for sharing your experience. The sunset is so beautiful.
It was a lovely place for the views and such an amazing sunset. I ❤️ 🇵🇹 😃
Awesome, I lived in Lisbon back in 1998 (worked at the World Expo 1998) used to call Cais do Sodré - Can of Soda! lol. Great seafood restaurants @ Cacilhas. Perfect weather day for amazing views of Lisbon.
Brilliant, Cindy. We love your names of places and have now adopted Pingo Dingo in our everyday parlance. 😁😁 - Lee
@@FrugalTravellers awesome :-)
Your videos are the best, thank you for sharing with us!
Thank you. We're really glad you enjoy them. Best wishes. 😊 ~ Lee
Thanks for sharing and brought back fun memories! I did my walk to Cristo Rei on a different path I walked along the riverbank to the Elevator of Boca do Vento and walked from there to Cristo Rei. Also, my ferry ride back to Lisbon was close to sundown so I had a view of all Lisbon bathed in yellow light. Very beautiful to see.
Glad you liked it and it sounds like you took a good route up to Cristo Rei. We noticed the elevator from the ferry. Was there a charge to use it?
The ferry is a lovely way to cross over at sunset. What a beautiful spot!
Thanks for watching! 👍~Lee
You are both cute and I wanted to let you know I travel the way you do…..frugally but having fun finding deals. Thank you for the fun traveling. I’m flying to Portugal next week on Tuesday May 3, 2022.
Thank you so much. It's great to hear you enjoy frugal travel like we do. Hope you enjo your time in Portugal. It's such a beautiful country and great value for money too. 😍 ~ Lee
i'm flying to Lisbon from Hong Kong next month. I'm hoping to stay at the Christ statue a bit later than you, have my camera on a tripod and photograph the bridge lighting up with Lisbon behind. it looks like the statue also lights up after dark so that should be another good picture.
That sounds like a wonderful plan, and we're sure you'll get some amazing shots! We're firm proponents of slow travel so saw a few different parts of Lisbon. I'm not sure if you've seen this video where we explore parks and the LX quarter ~ Mandy 😁😀 ruclips.net/video/PmzYpxiXKn8/видео.html
Oh we've been here! Hee hee!
Isn't it great to see places you're familiar with pop up on RUclips or adverts or tv shows :))
Really enjoyed this. It was all familiar turf to me and I loved your interpretation of it.
Thank you, Imo - that's so kind of you to say 😊😃
happy 2021 to you ....i come to porto in march :) very nice video !!!!!
You will love it there! Happy 2021 to you. 🎉
I know this place is one of hidden gem in lisbon
Isn't it a great place to visit!
Another great video. I would like to visit the Christ statues too. Only saw one in Gozo/Malta . Did not know the one in Angola... :)
So glad you liked this. It's definitely worth a trip over if you are staying in Lisbon. We didn't know there was one on Gozo. It's on our list to visit there so we'll check it out. Thank you! 👍😊
Loving Mandy's toilet updates!
I always keep an eye out for a loo... especially free ones 🤣☺️
There’s a Christ statue in Madeira too. You can complete your collection then. My other half thought she’d done them all until you showed the Angola one.
We didn't know there was one in Madeira. Great excuse to visit! Enjoy your next holiday in Angola! 😃
Novo Rey Do Mundo, Cristo Rey.
We are so happy that you enjoyed this video! 😃🙏 ~ Mandy
Looks yummy !
How big is this statue in comparison to the one in Rio? Seems quite big, maybe the same size but the one in Rio seems bigger because it is higher?
The Rio one is much bigger. Can't remember the stats but this one was based on the Rio one after the Portuguese visited in the 1930's and thought.... "Cool, we want one like that!" 😊
O Cristo redentor tem 38 metros (Contando com o pedestal, que faz parte da estátua), o Cristo rei de Lisboa tem 28 metros
Is that the same card you use in the subway or bus or do you need a different one?
It's the same one. I think it might have changed recently from via viagem to Navigante card.
Dude how are you still managing to travel? I heard all the European countries are following a strict lockdown?
We came here when the borders were still open and internal travel is still permitted here. Things change fast so it's always best to keep an eye on the latest situation. We'll sit it out safely in the Algarve for now. 👍
@@FrugalTravellers good to hear and be safe and cautious brother. Love from India ❤️.
I used to work in Cais Sodre in 1999-2000.
That would have been so interesting! I bet it's changed loads since then.
There's one in East Timor too
I really want to go there. Thanks for the tip, we'll be sure to seek it out now. 👍
Lift?? Only steps?
Lift and then steps. They wouldn't allow me to video the lift.
They sprayed you cause they didn't you to infect the statue mate ;D.. btw it's sad that they don´t have a breakproof glass instead of those stainless steel bars for a more perfect view but that's ok since the view it´s glorious.
Cacilhas is a good spot for cheap fresh seafood/shellfish near Lisbon and also take the opportunity to see more of Portugal outside the touristic capital with some nice views of Lisbon to complement; I can recommend two spots near Cacilhas on the city of Almada which are "Ponto Final" summertime only and the "Amarra ó Tejo" up the clifftop on the Almada Castle garden then walk down via the main road back to the ferry and have a nightcap on those bars along the way; if you arrive early then head to the "NRP Dom Fernando II e Glória" museum ship XIX Century frigate or the diesel cold era submarine " NRP Barracuda" next to it.
Wow... This is amazing information. Thank you so much. It was nice to go over to that side of the city. We are currently in the Algarve now but if we return to Lisbon we'll check out some of these recommendations. I like the sound of the museum ship. Really appreciate your input! 👍👍
There's another Christ in Madeira.
Thank you. 🙏. We really want to go to Madeira. It sounds amazing. When we go, we'll visit the Christ there. 👍 ~ Lee
Cheese sandwiches... no marmite? Hahaha
Marmite... salty jam... on toast...! The dirty evil bastards 😂😂
Hahhha, Yaman 🤣😂 Just so you know, I'm carrying a jar of Vegemite that I bought in the UK... so delicious with lashings of butter on fresh crusty bread 😀😋
It hurts to watch covid times videos…
“Masks on ofcourse!”😡
I agree 😬 May those times never ever return.
