In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the first song that I ever heard from Nightwish, Ghost Love Score. Back in early 2021, I was just starting my channel, and the Nightwish fans found me and encouraged me to hear the band's music. I've been a fan ever since, but I've only heard Floor Jansen singing this classic symphonic metal & proggy song. Today, I'm hearing original vocalist Taria Turunen sing the piece...and my love of the tune was reinvigorated. I hope you enjoy!

@@Kubrzesz yes Sleeping Sun is one of my favorites too! I think Sleeping sun works it magic with the current mood that your in. It's very dark, Tuomas says its about an eclipse and it could also be an eclipse of the heart as well! Tuomas is a genius and every band member a master of their craft and they work together like clockwork. The band very much unknown in the states and it takes the magic of reaction videos to wake up the masses to the genius of this Band.My Highest Nightwish moment was seeing them last year in Kitee,Finland, a long way from Long Island,NY.

To this day I love the studio version a lot! There's just something about really being able to focus on the orchestra and hearing every single instrument and shifts in the music❣The song really takes you on a journey and Tarja's dark, melodic voice makes it feel so fantastical. Very Tolkien-esque, which is even better when you learn that the orchestra is the same one that did the score for the LotR movies! And I like that Tarja's singing doesn't stand out, it's part of the whole piece of music, one part of the story, it creates such a full tapestry this way.
I would never want to exchange this version for anything, it's very very dear to my heart and makes me feel a kind of particular magic that nothing else can replicate❣
    Also the lyrics... poetry :)

@@johnsmith-cw3wo the instrumental versions of Nightwish songs in general are fantastic! They really show how much the quality of the compositions carry the music and give them so much atmosphere and depth. But I also do enjoy Tarja's vocals a lot, they fit this kind of music so beautifully :)

You did not have to mention that this album is nearly 20 years old. I remember getting it & listening to it for the first time, already a Nightwish fan, and getting blown away by this track. Its still one of my favourite songs. And when I heard you say that you'd only heard Floor's live performance I thought you'd be surprised by how many million times better the studio version with Tarja is. Floor has a fantastic voice, but Tuomas wrote this album with Tarja's voice and range in mind and in my opinion the tracks written since Floor joined have been a way better fit for her voice. Tuomas really is an excellent composer and writer. I love his work both for Nightwish and his own solo projects.

Floor addressed the ending in her reaction to GLS at Wacken. Prior to her joining the band, when Tarja sang the song live (have a look at her performance of the song at End of an Era), she simply walked off stage, and let the band play out, which they played and ended it how you hear it now. With Floor, she had stated that she had always loved the song, but also tended to ad lib off of it every time she heard it. One day at rehearsal on that tour (Please Learn the Setlist in 48 Hours), she just went for it and started crooning to the ending. The band loved it, so they wanted to try it in the show, which worked out well. From there, she worked on it to where it is now. There is a video out there called "The Evolution of Ghost Love Score", which focuses on the ending of the song from Floor's beginnings to where it is at now. It's definitely worth a look at.

The Floor’s performance is more powerful, but that’s not the meaning of this song. Is more significant by Tarja’s voice cause this song and dead gardens were specially expressed the conflicted Tuomas feelings that he has on her on that time. Is a love poem for Tarja instead of a long piece with head banging and scream belting that Floor signed up.

I know Floor sings it great live but the haunting sound of Traja voice suits the song better. You really feel her give her blood, life, and soul up for a loved one. It just tears your heart out like no other musical piece does.

I love the end of an era concert performance with the epic ending from the band. And to me it seems, like every time I hear Tarja`s live vocals, they tend to be even better than recorded. Her vocals during that concert were phenomenal. And with that amazing choir in the back ground, so intense. Thank you for the analysis.

I remember the first Nightwish live show I went to. 18th February 2005 in Manchester, England, when I was 15. My friend who I went with and I were arguing about this song. I was insisting that the line was "if you be the one to cut me, then I'll bleed forever", and he was insisting the line was "you were the one to cut me, so now I'll bleed forever". Turns out we were both right, the line changes between the start and the end of the song.

Glad you found them. They were founded back in 1996. The guitarist Empu, Keyboards & composer Tuomas were looking for a singer.
Tarja was a classmate back in Kitee, Finland.
Tarja learned to sing German Lied singing. Close cousin of opera. She extends her vowels vertically, adds vibrato through her notes. She knows how to project and cut through the orchestra in a theatre.
But personal issues led to tension. Personal dynamics caused them to fire Tarja the following Autumn after the world tour.
Warning the fan base was split.
The band put out a lot of things saying negative things and blaming her.
Now some 10 years on they started mending fences.
Everybody agrees they handled things badly.
But one thing I tell everyone is though fans want to create drama in chat, Both Tarja and Floor are good friends to this day.
Floor met Nightwish in 2002 when her then band opened for them (After Forever) in Europe, summer 2002.
Anette Olzon took over lead singing after a year long search.
She was with them 5 years and in 2 albums. Her style was pop/rock/metal
Her departure was due to her being pregnant. The plan was to stop touring in the spring once North America was done. Then Floor was asked to fill in as a guest.
Anette got sick and had to quit earlier. Now wether she quit the band or was fired is a matter of debate.
After the tour the Band asked Floor to become a full time member. She too has classical training but sings a more traditional rock/metal style but lacks nothing for power and does justice to the old NW library that Tarja sang. Or lots of it anyways.
Lots of tracks she has not sung in concert.
She asked for and got Tarja's blessing to join, so she did. That was 2013.
Tarja started her solo career in 2006 and has some 20 different releases between concert DVDS/CDs full albums, an auto biography, etc.
Now Marko was the full time male vocalist and Bass player from 2001 to 2021.
He and Tarja renewed their friendship in 2017. Now they are on tour together with him as Tarja's guest. Europe this summer is the plan.
NW will be putting out a new album when Floor is back. Time off to have a 2nd child and released a solo album.
Tarja has put out 5 albums in 18 months the last being Dark Christmas. There is a new rock/metal album promised as well.
The band members and Tarja have settled their issues and that is the story in a nutshell.

Thanks a lot for the reaction. This studio version is my absolute favorite. When I discovered it, I listened to it over and over again, mesmerized by the music, choir and Tarja's voice. I didn't know anything about Nightwish at that time. I didn't even know the faces or names of the individual members. In the live version with Tarja, at the End of an Era concert, the chorus is just as strong. It was pushed into the background later, in the post Tarja era.
The verses sung by the choir are beautiful and it's nice what you say about it, but even though Tarja sings this song, Tuomas wrote it, so those verses about bleeding heart would rather refer to him.

In the live performance from End of an Era each band member shines. Tarja's vocals were not mixed and muted like in the studio version, they are rich and dark and sorrowful. When she comes to the end of her part, she does not feel the need to belt and make it all about her, she simply and quietly leaves the stage so that the focus is on the band. The music builds and the choir is clearly heard. Sorry but for me THAT is the best version of this song!!!

My friend gave me whole Nightwish discography with bootlegs. Like 4 CDs full of mp3.
So I'm deep into the night, lying on my bed, skipping songs looking for stuff that I like, but slowly falling asleep.
And then I heard this, at first I didn't like it but 4 minutes later I was crying.
It was just a waterfall of pure beauty that I didn't expect.
And here I am 20 years later - and whenever I hear this song I have to shed a tear. It's just... something.
And there's only one thing better than this song - it's the same sound but in DTS surround sound.

That and Judas Priest's Painkiller album is just something that will always be in my heart.

Thank you! This was very interesting! I love how loud the instruments are on this studio version. Though, vocally I prefer the live version from End of an Era with Tarja (and the one from Wacken 2013).
I love Tarja's dark tone. It intriques me. Her voice is very unique. Nowadays, Tarja's voice has matured a lot. She has even more darker side to her voice and she use a lot more of her chest voice. Right now, she is touring South-America with Marko (the ex-bassist of Nightwish). They are friends again and they released a song together last week called Left On Mars. I would love to hear your thoughts about it. I think it's a great song!
About Tarja's pronounciation: Back when this was recorded, she sometimes still had a quite a thick Finnish accent.
I always thought Ghost Love Score was about unrequited love or a failed relationship. Tuomas wrote this and there has been a ruomour going around for years that he wrote songs about Tarja and this was one of them. That he wrote about his love for her.... who knows
I love these lyrics. In the first choruses they are:
"My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
If you are the one to cut me
    Then I'll bleed forever"
Then for the last part it changes to:
"My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
You were the one to cut me
    So I'll bleed forever"
    Simply, a masterpiece.

Another very impressive number would be how much it cost to produce the album. IIRC it cost around 250k $ to produce it, with well over 100k spend on the orchestral recordings. But this is also an album where I'd say that every single penny was a great investment, as this is one hell of an album.

I’ve been into a lot of Prog Rock/Metal over the years. Symphonic Metal has always been a hit or miss for me. Nightwish/Tarja are definitely bands I absolutely love.
Ghost Love Score is a must for anyone who wants to hear a top notch Prog Metal Epic. Like many here I agree some of the live versions are better even though the studio version is already perfect. Tarja is my favorite singer. She really took Operatic Metal to its peak.

There's a male vocal cover by contra-tenor power metal singer Yiannis Papadopoulos. I think you should check it out too. He also did the siren by nightwish and the band actually performed it live with him when they were on tour last year.

If you "grew up" with Tarja as the singer of Nightwish, there won't be a chance for anyone else. Floor is absolutely amazing, no doubt... but these old songs to me only fit with Tarja. They were composed for her opera voice. And it was an amazing combination... pure love!!!

The versions are different in a good way. The more symphonic original version has the orchestra and choir more prominent. Tarja’s voice floats above the rest at the end. Floor’s version is scaled back some and they adjusted it for her voice. All great stuff.

Oh yeah, Floor does that belting at the end and it sounds amazing. However, when I hear this version with the choir behind it's just better without belting so that we can hear the choir and words.

You have plenty of material to go since 1996 -> and so many different songs....and line-ups. Check how they really started ...the most original ones too to get perspective. They changed this a bit later in gig shows specially the fading ending into scream ending. This is about love and here they want to bring up this feeling. Tuomas wrote this masterpiece in 2003 or so...being some 25 years young. Soon you find out where from Tuomas gets his inspiration and how it has changed by time.

My go-to's of Ghost Love Score are Wacken Open Air (of course) and Buenos Aires 2012. It was great to have Doug pointing out features of this version -- and this singer -- that I'm not all that familiar with.
13:03 rhythmic chorus: It's very O Fortuna, isn't it? (Probably other places in the Carmina Burana too, but that's the one that comes to mind.)
13:46 Doug's disappointment at the fadeout: What @athlonen said!

As amazing as the live version with Floor at Wacken is, it really isn't to the amazing production value of the studio version. I honestly believe Tarja's voice is more tailored to this song. That fact plus the mix and production makes it the superior version.

    • @tuomaspuumalainen3018
      @tuomaspuumalainen3018 2 месяца назад +2

Tarja's too one note for the track. Her "adoring beast" part sounds comical after Floor's version where she actually pays attention to the lyrics. And the live ending with Floor elevated the song to a whole new level. I do like the access to the orchestrations and choirs on the album, though.

    • @theubie
      @theubie 2 месяца назад +2

@@tuomaspuumalainen3018 That's one of the most beautiful things about music... it speaks to people in different ways. While you see Tarja as "too one note", I see her voice as perfect for the track as it blends seamlessly with the rest of the score. Floor's rendition, for my ears, is over-sung, as is a lot of her renditions. Some songs call for you to belt things out. To me, this is not one of them. And, luckily, we both have versions of this song that we fell is superior.

You said that Tarja 'made the most' of her tone in this song. While Tarja was in the band, the songs were specifically written for her voice. I wish you had your keyboard for this one, the music theory and arrangement insights you give are the most interesting parts for me. Some of my favourite videos of yours are when you are in the church playing along to Opeth, the musical theory and analysis lessons in those are ace. Thanks for your videos.

One other thing that's different in the live version is the way Emppu ends his solo.
I always imagine that discordant end he puts into the live performance as 'the cut' referenced in the lyrics.
I never checked but I do believe the lyrics change from future tense to past tense regarding the cut on that point.
