Nice review. I've had an HW90 .22 for around three years from new. It's an incredibly well engineered rifle. Power dropped to around 8.5 fpe so I had my local gunsmith replace the valve for a new one and refill the cylinder. Back up to 11.5 fpe. The rifle is consistently accurate and the drop off of power is barely noticable over time so it's worth running it through the chronograph every few months to stay at the optimum. Worth noting is the lock to pull time with the HW90, it is very quick and the trigger is as good as many that are claimed to be better. Needless to say that I won't be selling this one of mine. It really is superb.

love to see a review of the Theoben Richard. I went to the Scottish game fair last year with the intention of buying a new rifle, my brother in law said don't bother i've got one you can have. WOW a Scirocco, sub 12 with less than a tin of pellets through it from new. What a gun!!

I had one for about a week. This is an old school gas ram design from way before the gas rams of today. The idea of being able to adjust the ram pressure was cool. German built was cool. THe trigger was good. In it's day this was a magnum break barrel but today their more mid level putting out about 20 FPE. It broke my Center point scope that has been on my Hatsan 125 Sniper in about 5 shots. It's got a horrendous shot cycle. This was going to be my dream setup and I ordered the barrel and parts to swap it to .20 cal. I sent it back along with the extra barrel. The finish on the stock wasn't what I would expect from around a 600.00 German spring either and was the final straw that made me return it. The butt stock and buttplate was rough with gaps inbetween. I shoot and collect and keep every gun in pristine condition for resale some day and this already came with flaws that would ding the value. Love my HW97K in blue lament. As far as power and gas rams I have a Gamo Hunter Extreme Pro I bought on sale new from GAMO USA for just under 200.00 in .22 that is an amazing shooter at 27-30 FPE with a select beech stock that sits proudly among my German springers.

I was another one who lusted after a Theoben. I did get a Feinwerbau Sport Mk2 124 in the early 80's, I bought it out of the Freemans catalogue :). I currently have 2 springers, an early HW99s and HW97k Silverhawk. They are both in .177 and a HW90 would round off this little collection nicely. I also have an Airtech converted BSA R10se and a highly modified SMK 78. Nice review. I have found the new BSA range of pellets work very well in my HW's

    Hi Richard,
Thank you for another great, indepth review. I especially liked your close up shots of the gun and of the trigger mechanism.
Thank you also for showing us your Theoben gas ram in the initial stages.
I have to agree, I adored those air rifles back then too, though owning one was completely out of the question.
Up until now, I've never really taken the modern gas rams on board as I presumed they'd be prone to problems and would spend more time in the gunsmiths than out.
Watching your review with the rifle straight in front, made my knees go weak. What a gorgeous looking air rifle. It looks fantastic. I have quality springers, though not one of these.
I'm sure youll agree, if Weihaurch are making them, theyll be quality.
I havent time to shoot and enjoy the rifles I have, let alone buy another.
I missed the boat with Theoben. By the time I could afford their sublime quality kit, they were long gone, bless them. That was a great loss, with respect to RAW now.
I would see this rifle as the modern equivalent and would definately think of it as half Theoben and fantastic quality and engineering. So proud, like BSA, Air Arms and Theoben, they were all british with fantastic design and quality.
    Best wishes, R.

I bought a HW 90, back in the late 80s which was superb, however cocking the long barrel of the HW 90 was sometimes tricky when shooting in the field or confined spaces. So I bought a carbine barrel and had it fitted. This solved the cocking issues, but it never quite compared to the long barrel for accuracy.Just part exchanged it for the HW 100…….gone modern 😁

I had a go with one of these in 22cal recently and was pleasantly surprised. They don't seem to be as popular as the 95K but as far as I could tell it was every bit as accurate, zero spring vibration (obviously) and the safety being resettable is a bonus. It's a nice looking rifle too. I imagine a gas ram is more prone to failure and more costly to replace than a coil spring, I could be wrong.

Absolutely a nice shooting rifle but i would rather buy a HW80K. Way more reliable than that gas ram system, even when it is the best gas ram on the market i would prefer the HW95,98 or 80. Coil springs and piston seals are easy to replace and springs can easy be adjusted with washers to get as close as possible to the 12 foot pound.

I agree with karlos543. I have had one since 1992 and replaced the O rings and Schrader valve 3 years ago - just because, not because it had lost pressure. I thought that after nearly 30 years of use, the rings should be changed. It took about an hour to do. I used a generic RockShox monarch type air valve adapter tool on a high pressure bicycle shock pump to re-pressurize the gas ram to 18 bar. I had to wrap the thread with teflon tape to ensure a tight fight.

Hello ,is that a 16 joule rifle?
i tested a time a diana 350 springer with a coil spring cocked for 3 months ,nota big change in the output , it was not a restricted gun. also build a full power webley patriot spring in the HW 90 for testing ,made a new end piece for it ,it was easy`r to cock and output the same .same as 30 pumps with the orginal hw pump.
i think weihrauch does not have more gasrams ,because they both have there good points,
i got the first gun from the serie hw 90 ,there where little problems ,they changed the gas ram from alu to steel . trigger systeem was changed and the dovetail was not with arrestor holes . i stil have one in .25 kal.
its shoots smoother then the hw 80 .output also the same 30 joule .

Hi. Thanks very much. The trouble is that most decent gas ram/spring powered rifles are set up to accept a scope in order to exploit their accuracy potential. Open sights tend to go on cheaper and less accurate rifles. That's not a hard rule but a generalisation. The exception is The Weihrauch HW77 which is an excellent and very accurate spring powered rifle but also comes with open sights. We reviewed it on the channel (with a scope) here: ruclips.net/video/UuTi2MjmL6w/видео.html
I've not seen it done, but I'm sure a competent gunsmith could attach open sights for you. Though it might be cheaper, quicker and easier to go for an HW77.

Brilliant review (as always - learning so much through your channel!!)
When you compare this to the BSA GRT Lightning XL SE, is the HW90K significantly better in terms of feel or is the BSA version able to hold its own? Was thinking of upgrading from my current Webley VMX 'springer' as find the resonance a problem, and like the look (and cost) of the BSA so appreciate your thoughts. The alternative is something like the HW77K though like the idea of the gas ram simply from a technology point of view.

    • @alphamilitaria2756
      @alphamilitaria2756  Год назад +1

Hi Campbell. I can't be sure but I think the scope was a Weihrauch model. In terms of optimum distance, if shooting at live quarry I'd say 40 metres in .177 and 30 in .22. If you're shooting at targets, you can push it out and try your luck to 100 metres or more. To stress the point though, if you're planning on hunting and pest control, the maximum distance is whatever you can hit a 10p coin 10 times out of 10 in whatever position you intend shooting from - only practice will tell you that. Hitting a target at 60 metres sat down behind a bench with a support having had a few shots to work out the wind speed and direction does not mean you can shoot squirrels or pigeons at the same distance standing up! Good luck.

Thank you for your great review. My question is, am I likely to get any issues with loss of pressure in the gas ram unit? If there are any issues, can they be fettled with common sense and not having to trail to the local gunsmith?
If I purchased this air rifle, I'd partly look at it as a Theoben, as Theoben assisted Weihrauch in the early days and I dont particularly want to buy a second hand Theoben rifle that I dont know how's been treated. I Hope you are keeping well!
I am considering buying this air rifle. Would you think it a good idea to purchase the pump with it?
Would I need it to top up the air pressure for different demands of the air rifle? Example, ratting at 15 yards, then pigeons in trees 30-40 yards away?
I was thinking it may be handy to have, as if you don't have one, you'd be stuck with whatever air pressure you have.
Is there a pressure gauge on the pump in terms of knowing how much pressure is in and not over filling the cylinder?
      Thank you, Rich, Ian.

Hi Yulianto. I'm afraid I don't have a video showing how a gas ram works. It's quite simple really. With a spring powered rifle a mainspring is compressed when you break the barrel and cock the rifle. When you you pull the trigger the spring expands again and pushes the air in front of it to propel the pellet. With a gas ram, the spring is replaced by a chamber of air. So when you break the barrel and cock the rifle you compress the air (instead of a spring). When the trigger is release, the air expands again and propels the pellet. I hope that helps.

Hi Dave. Yes, as I suspect you have probably worked out, the reference to the HW95K was a slip of the tongue. I hope it didn't ruin the video for you. If you'd like to know more about the HW95K please check out our review of it: ruclips.net/video/_mOZJ6jzMiI/видео.html
