Hi guys... Yay!... Good on you Ian, Bovril is a favorite of mine too. As a kid, i used to buy a hot Bovril drink, out of a vending machine, after going swimming at the local public swimming baths. At home, i sometimes add a crumbled Oxo cube in my Bovril too, just for the extra meaty punch, and if you've got some bread that needs using up, it's also good to dip in your hot Bovril drink. Try using Marmite or Bovril when making gravy, it really adds to it's overall flavor. By the way, in a half pint mug, i always use as much Bovril as i can get on a single teaspoon, and i make sure it's all dissolved properly. You can experiment too by adding a little splash of Worcestershire Sauce, or Hendersons Relish, or add a little HP Sauce to it. Anything goes really, you never know, you just might find a new taste you really adore. Cheers Dara, and Ian.

Bovril is basically a high quality, concentrated beef stock. It was marketed as a drink first and foremost (put as much in your mug as you need to get it to your taste!)
Bovril also very good on toast, in sandwiches, or instead of a stock cube in bolognese/ragu/chile con carne etc
Marmite is often the first savoury taste that UK babies get when they are weaning - but needs using sparingly (almost all non UK reviewers use way too much). Not a good drink, but super in sandwiches, on toast, or actually between 2 fake cheese slices (at 2am after the pub)!
Vegemite is not to my taste, and many in the UK see it as a 'weak' marmite. You're right, it is too yeasty imo, but dosage is not as critical as with marmite, so many people get on better with it.

Your Bovril drink needed about two to three times that much dissolved in the hot water...also try dipping cubes of bread torn roughly from a loaf...delicious as a warming snack when you're fresh in from a cold and rainy night!...And you're right about not drinking Marmite/Vegemite...Eating the latter is fine by me...but I prefer the Marmite (though having been brought up on the stuff, the thickness I personally like would probably horrify you!).
If you like a fishy taste we're going to have to try you with the gentleman's relish spread really thin on toast...not sure Dara will like, (NOT a challenge but a friendly caution), but I've a feeling you just might! The toast needs to be hot though and the butter thick - so put away that toast rack!
    Dave
PS Of course there's that very old joke - "Marmite"...said a rather hopeful Pa...

It's my fault... Ian kept telling me the drink needed more Bovril in it! But then, he kept telling me I had too much Marmite on my toast! LOL - rookies!

As a Brit, I grew up on Marmite and Bovril (only ever drank Bovril though). If you like a little mix of sweet and savoury here's a trick from a Singaporean friend. Mix Bovril with a small dab of kecap manis (sticky thick dark soy) and salted butter. Spread that on your hot toast. You can go the extra mile and use that to make a Bovril bacon and cheese toasted sandwich (my gran used to make these) as a fantastic variant of grilled cheese sandwich. As a big marmite fan, I like pre-mixing it into a stick of butter, wrapping that in saran wrap and putting it in the fridge so I don't have to deal with a gloopy mess every morning. Also great melted into many different things (scrambled eggs etc).

I love Marmite, but in the tiniest amount. Personally I think there was enough on that knife for two rounds of toast. And Bovril is a drink! I've never heard of anyone eating it on toast. Likewise I've never heard of anyone drinking Marmite! And the only time I've come across Vegemite is when I listen to the '80s classic song 'Down Under' by Men At Work!
Bovril anecdote: When I was eight I spent a while in hospital, and I remember a nurse bringing the drinks trolley round one day. All the plastic cups were preloaded; I think it was called the Klix system. And the trolley had a huge urn of hot water on it too. I asked her for a coffee with milk and sugar. The nurse brought me the drink. I took one sip and nearly spat it across the ward! She'd made me a hot Bovril with milk and sugar.

(Thanks for Ben Starr for his tutorial about it!) Thanks for the fun video! P.S. An amusing note I found regarding Vegemite after reading how American company Kraft bought the company in 1935 though it kept being made in Australia -- and then Australia got back ownership of Vegemite in 2017 after 90 years: "Vegemite is not just a staple in Australian sandwiches; in recent years it’s also been used to make bootleg alcohol. Described as a 'precursor to misery', the government suggested local regulations to limit how much can be purchased at one time." Can you imagine getting a shot of Vegemite at a bar or pub? LOL.

Bovril is first and foremost a drink. Its basically a beef boullion cube with extra beefiness (for best results use white pepper when mixing it with water, also dont be afraid to make it strong).
Marmite is the ultimate "on toast experience", its salty/yeasty goodness that goes hand-in-hand with the neutral bread and creamy butter counterparts; use sparingly as the sodium levels are alarming and the sharp taste can easily overpower the butter and bread. Its also the council estate cousin of Bovril in terms of a drinking stock, always go Bovril for a hot drink.
Vegemite is marmite's younger cousin. Most brits will talk shit about it, but if you like that yeasty flavour with less salt its the way to go. Never tried it as a hot drink.
Each one has its merits. All need to be respected.

Congratulations for your commitment to actually try these :) So I have a tip for both of you, based on your love for a) hot toast and b) good cheese. So...
1: Immediately after toasting, butter your toast so ALL the butter melts. Don't be simply on the butter :)
    2) Now add Marmite, into the melted butter. Mix it in.
    3) Add a small, but slightly tick slice of extra mature cheddar to the centre of the toast - don't cover the toast, just the centre (say a 50p sized slice)
Now, most of the toast will be melted butter mixed with marmite, which is absolutely delicious (eat it while the toast is still warm), but when you get in the middle, you suddenly have the aged cheddar which perfectly contributes the marmite.

I've only tried Vegemite. Initially, I found the taste kind of off putting, but I'd heard it's an acquired taste. So I had it a few more times and began to find the after taste pleasant and before long I was craving it in the morning on my toast. Definitely an acquired taste, but once you appreciate it, it's hard to stop.

u should try the marmite cheese and marmite peanut butter.
i find oxo stock cubes is better than bovril for drinking. just crumble the cubes into a cup or mug add hot water stir and drink. OXO comes in beef, chicken and veg versions.
Marmite was created out of the left over yeast skimmed from the top of the beer making process. vegemite is basicly left over veg from making vegetable stock and does taste of old socks lol. bovril is basicly for adding a bit of flavour to gravy and soups.
As for marmite it depends on ur taste how much u use. i tend to use a desert spoon of marmite on my toast. some use a teaspoon. some use less.

Of those three I prefer Bovril. Bovril also makes a good hot drink. Another savoury spread which I love above those other three is Patum Peperium, which must be used very sparingly on toast, or as I eat it on oatcakes. It’s made from anchovies so is high in protein and quite salty; on an oatcake scrape a very thin layer of PP, then perhaps some cottage cheese on top, followed by a little tapenade (a paste made from black to green olives). That’s a loverly combination in my view. Sometimes I add a sliver or two of cucumber and radish on top too. As an accompaniment to a glass of a rose or white wine it is lovely 😋👍

Even though I'm not a huge Bovril fan, if I had to get out of a swimming pool on a cold British morning, I would definitely drink a mug of Hot Bovril!! Thanks for the comment. Not sure I'll try the milk in Marmite "tea", but I love hearing all the ways people have Marmite!

The only place for 'Vegemite' is in a song by 'Men at Work'😉

Agreed! Or perhaps it could be used to grease an axle, like Ian suggested?

Bovril doesn’t belong in that taste test because it’s not a yeast extract nor is it a spread. It’s a liquid beef stock for soup.

I understand your point of view and respect that opinion. However, a subscriber had mentioned liking to put Bovril on toast even more than Marmite, so I was curious to see what it was!

Have you tried crumpets, marmite and cheese?

Not yet, but I've heard it's lovely. And melted cheese is my love language ;-) haha

If you try Marmite enough it will grow on you. Trust me.🙂

Ian has had it enough to like it. Now we have to see if over time I am persuaded to try it enough to tolerate it... maybe once we live here for longer periods of time, I'll cave in and try it on a cheese sandwich. But just an atom of it... with the excess scraped off ;-)

Some marmite with melted cheese is good. The intense savoury taste mixed with some creamy cheese is divine. Also I have only ever heard of people drinking bovril and not the others.

For sure, if I try Marmite again, it will be in a sandwich with CHEESE! And only the tiniest trace of Marmite ;-) Thanks for the comment, Andrew!
