To be fair, a Lot of processing power probably goes into coordinating/integrating all the combined systems and managing the sheer Mass components in the big guy, plus regulating the shielding, offensive arsenal and all that stuff built into him that the component bots dont have or need to worry about while separate.

Fun Fact: Combiners have a separate personality from their individual components. For example, when the combaticons combine into Bruticus, none of the individual combaticons are in control. Also, a combiner's individual components do not get to decide when to separate. For example, Bruticus, will only separate if he wants to separate. Onslaught, Swindle, and the others have no say in it.

My last favorite ite iteration of Combiners is Probably Prime wars, they NEVER. Separate even though it would increase they're Combat effectiveness ten-fold or more. Basically everything but Megatron and sometimes (remember: Sometimes) Optimus is, well, kinda Terrible

Depends on the continuity. In the original lore the personalities of the bots combining affected how cognitive the Combiner was. It's why Predaking and, to a lesser extent, Defensor were the only truly intelligent combiners while the others were often raging lunatics.
Though to be fair the Bruticus SHOULD have been a competent one since the combaticons did all defer to Onslaught unlike the Stunticons where Motormaster was hated and/or feared by the others.

In a Japanese exclusive episode of G1 that is supposed to be a bridge of sorts between the cartoon and the movie (mainly to introduce some of the new Autobot characters), a specific scene shows Menasor detaching Wildrider and having him attach to Superion’s leg to cripple the Aerialbots after Fireflight gets confused and attempts to connect as the wrong limb, crashing into his team-mates and falling off. The episode name is “Scramble City: Mobilization.” This shows that the combiners can switch limbs with other teams.

Each of the fours letters in bound to a hip or knee joint and you have to travel the furthest you can without falling over.

This is pretty spot on and still hilarious! In canon I believe the combiners tend to act in what each of their parts is thinking in common. Which is most commonly violence and destruction. (Maybe they worked in retail) Also I love them calling out swindle for being the new guy.
