  • Hello, my name is Nick Regnier. I am sharing a video that I just made during the pandemic situation with COVID-19. This is a video with tutorial demonstrating with the Jo what we call the “Lost Kata” or “18 Kata” or "1964's Jo Kata" shown by Saito Sensei on the film footage from 1964 recorded in Iwama by Nadeau Sensei.
I was able to do this demonstration thanks to Ethan Weisgard Sensei who recently did a very good video step by step demonstrating this form from Saito Sensei’s 18 Jo Kata, which can be found in this link: / 10220279815039135
The old video link filmed in 1964 • Aikido, Morihiro Saito...
The lost 18 Jo Kata can be found at 07:08 in this video link.
The 18 Jo Kata performed by Ethan Weisgard can be found in this video link: • Ethan weisgard kata 18

Ahh I looked at the old clip with Saito Sensei and it seems to me that after he ends the 31 jo Kata he does some free play combining movements as he likes in flow. This comes quite naturally once we are familiar with the jo and all its possible moves. To me, it’s not an established kata. And that’s why we never see it again.
