Autoshop was going to charge me 2,000 dollars to replace all 4 struts...225 dollars per strut...i went on amazon and purchased all 4 complete strut assemblies for 225 dollars and maybe 200 dollars for tools that i can keep. I think i like that better. :)
Hope it worked out for you. Cheap strut assemblies are known to be made of cheap parts and tend to fail very quickly. Better to change the struts themselves out and keep the original springs.

Now that's how you do a fix-it video, quick and to the point. At least for me. Needed a quick visual to get me prepared and this did the trick. Will be spending just over a grand on 4 struts/shocks for my newly acquired '94 Mazda 929 cause you can only get them OEM but at least I won't be paying for install. Thanx for the awesome vid Scotty.
Ok...i admit i repair my own cars for the last 33 years and I've come across and have been watching the scotty kilmer channel because it's hella interesting and even I learn new stuff....so i subscribed.
If they are worn or cracked, yes. Especially on front struts. But on these back struts, the mounts don't move like the front wheels turn in and out, so often you can reuse them.
Nice video Scotty! The video title made me think of that exact car, before the video even started playing! Just put some new rear struts and springs on my friend's '96 Geo Prizm not too long ago...he has over 200k miles on it. The rear end was sagging and the wheels were bouncing down the road like basketballs! Other than wear and tear items, the Toyotas of the 90's are pretty bulletproof vehicles and simple to work on.
Local auto shops want to charge me $800 to replace struts... I can't believe they take me for such a fool. I'm doing the job myself and I'm going to buy a set a tools to do it. Thanks to you I can perform the job nice and smooth. Thanks for the awesome videos!!

take it on the highway, if it rides fine until you hit bumpy parts, then the back bounces, they are worn out. It's pretty much a dynamic test unless they are completely worn out.
if you aren't losing coolant and it run good temp wise, leave it. They all leak a small amount at the weep hole when that old. When it drips on the ground, then replace it.
just depends on how hard they are driven, and how well made the struts are. For instance, chrysler often uses cheaper struts, they wear out fast. While Hondas are much better and I've seen em last hundreds of thousands of miles on accords.
Scotty, I think it is important to mention that those spring compressors can be dangerous. Be cautious, compress the spring slowly and evenly, take care not to drop it while it's loaded, and make sure to use a properly sized compressor for the job (i.e. don't use the small set from this video while working on large truck springs).

I know it's 9 year old clip, but for whoever watches this as a beginner as I am, and I just done mine, setting the top mount on the correct orientation before releasing the spring compressor can be a huge time and pain saver. The mounts usually have some kind of mark, which you need to align with the exterior bottom part of the strut where the 2 screws go in. You may need to readjust as you unscrew the compressors little by little, as the spring top vs bottom rotates slightly during decompression

Hey Scott. Great video, very helpful. I've replaced my rear struts only days ago but it continues to make a horrid clunking noise. When I inspected the large nut near the top hat there is a little metal plate underneath that rattles up and down when the car's in motion. Seems to be the source of the noise but I can't crank it down for the life of me! Is there meant to be a rubber bushing or something of the likes in between the nut and this little plate to keep it from moving around?
they work fine if you know how to bolt them on in the right place. I have a thousand dollar floor model, but I rarely use it anymore, these cheapies work fine and are simple.
Hey Scotty Something to look into: ratcheting spanners. They're something to get used to but they're useful for getting into areas that normal ratchets can't fit, kinda like the strut-bolt area in this video.
It looks like you changed them, but also good to note that with everything off, also change out with new quality bolts and/or nuts (easily found from the dealer), and the strut mount.
change the pcv valve and pray it's just that. if not, just keep adding oil, cause it's either worn valve seals or piston rings and that costs thousands to repair. Oil is cheap.
Hi Scotty, I just replaced the coil springs on my 2000 corolla le. The struts were replaced 2 years ago. The replacement went fine, but when I drive my rear side makes a knocking noise. Its fine when i go over speed bumps but when i go on a bumpy road it makes the noise. It sounds like there are tools hitting in the trunk. Thanks
Overall good video, but what about the torque required to fasten all of the bolts, this is an integral part of the maintenance that should not be overlooked. If not enough torque is given to bolts, you could run into trouble.
2003 Honda's u dont need to remove the rear seat, you can gain access to the top bolts from inside the trunk pull the carpet back. One thing Scotty didnt mention if you plan on doing this yourself and you buy the spring compressor be really careful removing the top cap for if that spring was to break loose from the compressors it is as enough force to hurt if not kill you. Be extremely careful you may even want to use a safety chain for added security. Also make sure you reuse the rubbers.
Hey thanks for the information scotty..my struts were as bad as they get..l got a couple of good ones from wreckers for a hunge and mechanics wanted 150 to put them on, your vid was a goldy lox..not to long or short just right, having the attention span of an ant l followed your instructions and it was easy even with my Fred Flintstone tools so cheers mate thanks heaps..
Scotty, If you are going through all that work, would you recommend going ahead and replacing the top mounts/bearing plates too since they are the same age as the old strut?
there are no adjustments on the strut on this toyota, it only goes back up one way as the 3 bolts on the top are staggerred. Some cars are not that way, so you would mark those strut bolts.

Take it from a guy who's been there. You can save money by re-using your old springs and fitting them to your new struts, HOWSOMEVER, you can buy "quick struts" (Monroe) for a little more, and not have to be worried about the spring compressors giving way. It's all one piece....you just pull out the old, and bolt up the new. All one nice, tidy package. It can be a little difficult to get the top bolts to go through the top mounting holes, (it would be a help to have a friend) it can be done.
Scotty is right about the vise grips but sometimes even VG teeth won't grip the smooth chrome shaft so you have to wrap clean, new, dry duct tape around the jaws.If you have enough room between the coils sometimes you can get a pipe wrench in there and those will usually grab and dig into the shaft, but remember, pipe wrenches only grab one direction.
Hey scotty. I like all ur videos they are lots of help. Now we have a 93 f150 4.9L. With check engine light. Do u have video for it. To find the problem.
go to a good front end shop, they can find things that most guys will miss and have equipment to measure problems you could never see with the naked eye.
you should do a small clip on tools. what to buy, what to start off with, everyday tools, once in a blue moon ratchets..etc. Some of my buds that are taking a short term auto course, y'know to learn a thing or two on cars.. They feel they should automatically jump into Snap On tools as well as the other dudes in the class. according to them their teacher has posted 2-3 of your vids in class.. you're teaching classes for Free Scotty!

Hi Scotty, I have a 2005 scion tc and I recently had to take the car to the dealership to get a part replaced that was under warranty and they told me that my water pump was leaking and when I got home I looked under the car and I saw no wet spots and the engine temperature has been normal. So I was just wondering if I should get the part replaced or should I just leave it alone?
scotty, any tips on finding out if your struts (front and rear) are done? I keep reading that they should not bounce up, but bounce up slowly to place. Thanks!
weak fuel pump or clogged injectors can do that, but certainly get your money back on the cat if they charged you for that. They could have pressure tested the cat, just like you would pressure test the fuel pump to see if it's bad.
yes, but then they sit oddly on the lower half. I sit on the bottom when working, and it's more convenient to have the seats totally flat when sitting on them.
hey scotty ive got a 2000 Ford Contour and I put new struts on it cause I thought they were making a banging sound in the back but all new struts and it still does it. what would cause the banging sound. oh it only does it when the car leans but if the tires hit a bump at the same time it don't do it.
Scotty one question is it possible that struts only causes a noise but doesn't bouncing? I checked every nut and bolt on the wheel assembly and everything is nice and tight, and still makes some clamping noises when hit a bump.
Heck, I use air powered tools most of the time I'm actually working. But since most guys don't have em, I go by hand in my videos. If you are serious about fixing cars, get an air compressor and a few air tools.
Hey Scotty ,How about a video showing how to change out the power window motors on the rear 1/4 windows on minivans and such , mine only work occasionally when they feel like it , ive tryed everything , new batt , cleaning the sliding door contacts, etc, stumped.
Hi Scotty. A month ago, my car didn't want to start. I changed the starter since I knew it was starting to go bad and charged the battery back to full but nothing happens. My dash lights go crazy or sometimes they just dim. I can hear my starter clicking but nothing. Is it the alternator? Thanks!
Buying just the strut might be cheaper but going with the quick strut is the better option for most people because they let them go for so long before they replace them that the spring and strut mount are worn out too so it makes more sense to buy the whole thing and only do the labor once, especially if someone is paying a shop the labor savings will cover the extra cost...Your advice is ok for a diy person with a new car but most people with 6yr old cars quick struts are the answer.
I have a 2005 Scion tc and the passenger rear tire recently started to hit and scrape against the wheel well when I got bumps mostly happening on sharp turns or when I have any rear seated passenger. Would the strut fix that problem or would I need a new coil as well?
I was going to try and replace the rear struts on my 2001 Dodge Intrepid but it looks like I bit off more than I can chew on that car as too much has to be taken apart just to get to them. Any suggestions?
Hey scotty I have a 2006 Mazda 3 and I replace the two front struts and coil springs because it was bouncing a lot, i also did alignment and balancing. However, when the car is on park or stopped at any stoplight the steering wheel vibrates and then it goes off when im driving. What do you think it could be?
hey scotty, i need ur help before u retire :) i have 2000 toyota celica gts. 1. The time between turning the key n engine firing up seems a little longer than any other car i've driven. 2. Sometimes when i floor it, tech revs up but not the speed itself. 3. When roll out with the engine cold, no response if i floor it. thanks a million.

You can, also try some AT 205 reseal poured into the steering, often fixes such leaks. Amazon sells it.

Overall good video, but what about the torque required to fasten all of the bolts, this is an integral part of the maintenance that should not be overlooked. If not enough torque is given to bolts, you could run into trouble.
Scotty, you did some magic with the break line!
I find your videos really interesting and educational.
Keep up the good work you just won a suscriber.
"Woop, woop, woop". Lol Scotty may have been working on cars for 45 years but he hasn't lost a step despite his long career.
Hey Scottie I was wondering, can you usually save the springs? And how would I know if I need to remove the whole assembly strut and spring?
Hey thanks for the information scotty..my struts were as bad as they get..l got a couple of good ones from wreckers for a hunge and mechanics wanted 150 to put them on, your vid was a goldy lox..not to long or short just right, having the attention span of an ant l followed your instructions and it was easy even with my Fred Flintstone tools so cheers mate thanks heaps..
this model only goes back in one way, the bolts on the top are staggered that way.
you have to remove the bottom seat, then the top parts have bolts you remove and then unsnap the top seats off.
most cars took off grease fittings decades ago. But if yours has any, get a grease gun, and fill em up.
Thanks Scotty... Your one hell of a guy to share all your knowledge!
yes
Scotty, If you are going through all that work, would you recommend going ahead and replacing the top mounts/bearing plates too since they are the same age as the old strut?
there are no adjustments on the strut on this toyota, it only goes back up one way as the 3 bolts on the top are staggerred. Some cars are not that way, so you would mark those strut bolts.

this does not effect alignment as they only bolt in one way.
To find the problem.
go to a good front end shop, they can find things that most guys will miss and have equipment to measure problems you could never see with the naked eye.
they work, but always leave some crud on the bottom, using the drain plug is better.
try my video "how to fix a car that squeaks in the back" that's AT 205 reseal, often works great. I get it at amazon as it's often hard to find.
you should do a small clip on tools. what to buy, what to start off with, everyday tools, once in a blue moon ratchets..etc.
That's what my neighbor said too. Thanks Scotty. Just needed assurance from a pro.
it's easier taking it out, so the tops sit flat and you can sit on them comfortably while working.

Any suggestions on getting the top bolt off the strut when the strut just spins with the bolt? Don't have access to an impact to take it off.
scotty, any tips on finding out if your struts (front and rear) are done? I keep reading that they should not bounce up, but bounce up slowly to place. Thanks!
weak fuel pump or clogged injectors can do that, but certainly get your money back on the cat if they charged you for that. They could have pressure tested the cat, just like you would pressure test the fuel pump to see if it's bad.
check the alternator, pray it's just that. Places like auto zone check em free.
Do the mounts go bad? Is it a good idea to change them at the same time?
yes, but then they sit oddly on the lower half.
I checked every nut and bolt on the wheel assembly and everything is nice and tight, and still makes some clamping noises when hit a bump.
many things can knock, jack it up, pull on wheels and check for play. If you can't find any, do my video "finding the source of car noises."
they didn't have filters back in those old days.
Is it advisable to change to springs along with the strut? Thank you!
Hi Scotty.
A month ago, my car didn't want to start. I changed the starter since I knew it was starting to go bad and charged the battery back to full but nothing happens. My dash lights go crazy or sometimes they just dim. I can hear my starter clicking but nothing. Is it the alternator?
Thanks!
Oh, I still use them for higher end cars.
Wow didn't know it was that easy, you saved me alot of money thank you.
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS SCOTTY I ALSO LOVE YOUR INTROS ARE THIS ALL YOUR VEHICLES THAT YOU DO BURNOUTS WITH?
Hey scotty I have a 2006 Mazda 3 and I replace the two front struts and coil springs because it was bouncing a lot, i also did alignment and balancing. However, when the car is on park or stopped at any stoplight the steering wheel vibrates and then it goes off when im driving. What do you think it could be?
Hi Scotty, question what can you say about oil extractor pumps when doing an oil change? are they really useful?
hey scotty, i need ur help before u retire :)
i have 2000 toyota celica gts.
1. The time between turning the key n engine firing up seems a little longer than any other car i've driven.
2. Sometimes when i floor it, tech revs up but not the speed itself.
3. When roll out with the engine cold, no response if i floor it.
thanks a million.
