  • One of the final stops on my trip was Whitefish, Montana, a town in northwestern Montana right next to Big Mountain ski resort, and a little further from Glacier National Park. It is also has the most used Amtrak station in Montana.
My first video about Whitefish showed some of the parks around the city, this video shows the Amtrak Station, library, shopping districts and a few of the residential areas.

The school is still full functioning middle school with 600 - 700 students.
The town only exists because of the railroad, & then the logging industry.
It used to be a hidden gem but now it has exploded with big out of state money 😢

      Interesting information.
The thing about tourism, though, is that a lot of towns are too successful at it. A lot of Montana towns wouldn't survive without tourism...but now are changing too much because of it. And I don't have all the answers for that...I just take pictures.

Looks like it's run down to me ! You can tell the multi millionaire's aren't sharing the wealth to the community. It looked a lot better when my family vacationed in the 60's and 70's . The regatta in the summer on Whitefish lake were great . Big boats and smaller boats in very good racing.

I actually thought it was pretty well maintained, especially things like the library. I think one issue is that a lot of the wealthier homes are probably outside of city limits, sometimes quite aways out, and so they aren't paying taxes to the city. I am not an expert on it, though.

"Whitefish isn't a cold place"? I beg to differ! The coldest winter I EVER experienced in my life was there back in 2003; it hit -40 degrees. More snowfall than many of the other places I have seen.

Weird, I don't know what I was saying there. I think I might have actually said "Whitefish is in a cold place" because I immediately say that it isn't always blue skies and golden sunshine afterwards. Or maybe I was just tripping over my tongue?

Oh yeah listened again pretty sure it is "Whitefish is in a cold place", which is kind of a strange thing to say. "Whitefish is a cold place" makes a lot more sense.

Hope you didn’t miss the oldest Hertz rent a car inside the train station.
I was staying at the hotel next to those bikes. The bikes belong to them. The hotel I stayed at was $160.00 a night. Super affordable!

I did show the Hertz counter, but didn't mention it---I maybe should have, but I probably could have made a 15 minute video just about that station!

Well done, sir. Your best video ever. I wish I could move there. I think it will have the same trajectory as Coeur d'Alene, Idaho... a remote resort town that gets "discovered" and overrun with wealthy fleeing Californians, and becomes unaffordable to all but the elite.

    • @glowingfish

Californians have as much right to be in Whitefish as anyone else!

@@glowingfish True. But they (and other wealthy people leaving their urban areas) have a tendency to raise property values astronomically, as in Bend and Coeur d'Alene. Didn't mean to single them out.

Also, thank you, I think this is a good video.

I guess the other thing that is pertinent here is that Whitefish was never a little farming town that accidentally got discovered by tourists. They have been developing themselves as a resort city for 50-100 years. Most places in Montana are similar---most parts of the state are centered around tourism.
