      I did plan on looking at the Instax Square when it was first announced, but once that price was revealed...it's way up there, so I thought there wouldn't be much interest.

    • @monmioamio
      @monmioamio 7 лет назад +19

      On the subject of Instax Square: no need to review it. It is brilliant. I bought one. It can print photos from the iPhone or iPad - but it involves an awkward process of putting the images on a micro sd card, so it involves a computer. The fun thing is that you can use the Square not only as a printer, but also as a camera. Downside: You would need an extra "long complain" puppet section at the end of the review video though : too expensive, too small a picture, not a real instant camera, it is not a real Polaroid, I can not print the iPhone pictures from the sd card because I did not bother to read the fine print of the user guide, i don't like Square images, I don't like fun things, etc, etc. So really no need to review it :-) I bought mine and it does what I like it to do. PS: Fuji, please put some Wifi in it and I will consider buying another one.

    Having to create an account is a deal breaker. You should not need an online account to use a printer. If they want to offer additional features that should be optional. This kind of thing is against the app store terms of service but apple never enforce their own rule on this.

    • @epdm2be620
      @epdm2be620 7 лет назад +4

      This is due to the fact that you upload the mini-video's to their "cloud" which are later interactively displayed in augmented reality form. As long as they don't sell your account info to other parties I have no problems with it. I believe that if you disallow internet access you'd still be able to print.

    • @sootikins
      @sootikins 7 лет назад +4

      Cascade: yeah, I won't be running out and buying this thing any time soon. A piece of hardware, whether it be a printer or something else, needs to work without any "registration" process and without some third party's "cloud". Sure they can offer optional internet based services but it can't be a requirement. And to EPDM I say that whether they sell your info or nit is irrelevant, they have no business having my info in the first place.

      because it uploads videos and photos to a cloud service to allow playback of AR photos, the push notifications are for when you plug your phone in to it, it needs to send a confirmation that you want to open the app (yes, that's a push notification).

    also makes more sense when they could also develop an app for Android users to capture a wider audiences.

  • @donaldklopper

    Good job! Loved the characters at the end... by the way I noticed the printed photos are cropped even more as compared to what's on the screen... I also wonder whether pulling down cyan and pulling up magenta in colour correction would improve printed colour. In newsprint, as in newspaper printing, we had to pull up cyan and pull down magenta each by around 20% to achieve better colour rendition. This was very typical at the time anyway.

      The Polaroid Zink printer works by Bluetooth. Why not this? I dunno, stops you losing it. It needs to be surrounded by space for the paper to eject into, so you couldn't print with it in your pocket. I suppose they tried several designs and this was the best.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go use my Dell computer, with an LG monitor, and listen to songs I bought on Amazon or burned myself and transferred it to my hard drive without any parent company being aware of it or giving me permission. Then I'll send a file from my Dell computer to my Samsung phone and then choose to open that file with whatever program I choose to associate it with. Yep, exactly the same as if all those products were purchased from Apple and were running Apple software with Apple logins and Apple permissions. Exactly the same!

    As usual, a concise, thorough review.
    As far as the product goes, I think that the price of the actual printer to be a minor concern, the real issue on these beasts is the cost of the prints. Just short of 50 cents each.
    That seems a bit expensive for small poorly colored images.
    But then, I'm probably not the demographic it's aimed at either.

    Do these Zink photos fade over time?
    Maybe ten or so years ago, I received a photo printer as a gift. At first, I loved printing out my digital photos. But then I realized that the printed photos fade so severely that they become unrecognizable after a few years. Apparently digital photo printers of this time tended to have this issue. Really a ridiculous scam of a product, if you ask me and ruins the whole purpose of printing a digital photo. But I wanted to know if the technology has improved in this regard.

    Average of $2 a picture and no less than $1 after using enough packs of prints. That's way too much for what it does. This is worth $50 tops as a novelty and the pictures are worth about 10 cents. I don't see this being at all popular and only a gimmick if they keep these inflated prices.

    Absolutely no criticism of your video, I really enjoyed it and it was hugely informative (especially that colour representation - shame the app doesn't let you calibrate off a test print...)
    As a software and hardware engineer though, I personally am not forgiving of an app which is basically a glorified camera app not working smoothly on a device of that age! The iPhone 5 is still fully supported by Apple, it seems to be that lazy software companies regularly can't be bothered to optimise for those of us who can't afford a £800 upgrade every two years. Real shame.

    Those puppets are spot on. iPhone vs Android is totally irrelevant, and people that use Android love to hate iPhones for whatever reason. How about you just use the phone that you like and I'll use the phone that I like and we can all get along. The existence of Apple and the iPhone shouldn't send you into a foamy-mouthed rage. If anything, you should be glad that iPhones exist because competition breeds innovation. One company tries to do it better than the other company and you, the end user, benefits from that.
    Anyway, great video as always!

      And basically I noticed that it's always the Droid fans that have a go against iPhones and iPhones users (hence Techmoan' s irony at the end of the video) rather than the other way round.

      Well quite a few of Sony or Samsung phones are just as expensive as iPhones, even more than some of them. Same for mobile computers.

      gmcnewlook it's about function for me. Most android phones have removable batteries, (that's changing now though) and expandable memory. Also iTunes is the worst piece of software I have to be forced to use in years. Apple products are massively overpriced but lovely pieces of tech. It's down to taste.

      I was once asked to copy an audio recording of a lecture (made with a standard recorder app) off an iPhone to a notebook. There literally was a rage when I discovered it can't send a fricking file over Bluetooth and I had to download and install iTunes just to copy 1 file.

    I always ask myself one question when looking at Zink prints: If the prints look like shit, what's the point?

      Being able to stick inappropriate pictures of disgusting subjects on everything with the sticky back and all that... I'd buy it. Just like I have a bag of googly eyes to put on everything.

      I have to agree, as I've had an HP portable photo printer for years(runs of a battery or power adapter) that uses normal photo paper I can get from Dollar Tree, and the ink is cheap at around $13 US for 2 tanks of generic ink, and the colors are usually spot on unless I get a bad ink tank, only downside because of it's age, and the fact HP has not updated the firmware it won't see an SD card larger then 2GB using the built in card reader, but will if you plug in a USB SD card reader to it's USB port made meant for flash drives lol!

    • @greenaum
      @greenaum 7 лет назад

      How big's the HP portable? The Zink printer is like an oversized packet of fags. It does absolutely eat power though. I'm sure the one in the video is the same, since it's the same technology, a bunch of heaters that need to get very hot and cold very quickly. So you don't get a lot of prints per charge. For a portable printer though you can't beat it.
      Not that you ever really need a portable printer. Everyone has a phone with a screen bigger than the paper, so if you needed to show pictures on the move, just use that. Wait til you get to a real priniter if you need it on paper for some reason.
      The quality's not good enough for photography studios. So actually I've no idea who this is aimed at. Everyone has a powerful computer with a good display in their pockets, paper's getting closer and closer to obsolescence.

    What if you try to correct colors prior to printing with filters? I wonder if tinting them a bit more red will help.

    Is the key printed in the bottom right corner of the photos required on every photo? That's a deal breaker if it is. Is it possibly an icon the app recognizes to know to scan for an associated video file?
