- Besides its Silicon Valley tag, if there is one thing Bengaluru is defined by, it is its cosmopolitan nature. Lakhs of people from different parts of the country have made the City their home.
While many things have united the people here, what has often been a dividing factor is the linguistic debate.
This issue has flared up from time to time in Bengaluru. In the last week of December, the members of a Kannada outfit, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, vandalised non-Kannada boards in various parts of the city. Soon after, the BBMP announced that all name boards in the city should have at least 60% Kannada and the rest could be any language. The deadline for the same is February 28.
We asked retailers and proprietors across the city what they feel about this rule.
The Hindu’s reporters, TR Jahnavi and KV Aditya Bharadwaj, discuss the history of the linguistic debate; the ongoing confusion and the ordinance which was announced by CM Siddaramaiah to the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act 2022; the challenges retailers may face in following the rule and what lies ahead.

i belong to the state of Uttarakhand, in our state our own language which is over 1000 year old has been reduced to as a dialect of Hindi a 200 year old language. Bengaluru is a city in Karnataka and every Kannadigas have a birthright to use their language there.

The rule is simple: Love your language. Respect other languages. Do not let others impose and do not impose.
No language that has survived and flourished for centuries and that has phenomenal literally works and is spoken by millions will need protection and upliftment from certain groups. If you are made to believe so, it is the work of politically motivated players exploiting our innate love for our language.

But the Kannada Board rule is not something which started in 2023 it's there from many decades but these businesses wantedly didn't't follow it
when years of frustration builds up these organisations vandalise .
To save from vandalism in at least in 2024 they should put local language boards now or else they will vandalise again after waiting a few months.
They didn’t follow it because there was no legal grounds to do it. Businesses are private property.

What nobody is talking about is - if a law is being broken, shouldn't a law enforcement agency act? who are these clowns going around ransacking property? Govt can always fine shop owners. Nobody seems to condemn the acts of these clowns, that is a crime that doesn't even require any law.
The rule was already there long back but the clowns from other states deliberately did not wanted to put Kannada on sign boards..
Law enforcement is a joke in India. Businesses can easily get away with bribes and strong defense attornies. The procesecution doesnt seem to care about these issues. They dont even have suffeient manpower to enforce this.

What will the property owner or building owner or businesses lose if they put a board in the Indian Language kannada ?
The rule of the Kannada board for business has been there for many decades.
It's common sense to use the Local language kannada in Bengaluru , Tamil , Telugu Malayalam Marathi Bengali in respective cities.

I have been in bengaluru all my life , wt i have seen his we as kannadigas obviously dont expect anyone to just learn kannada as soon as you reach here but if you are gonna stay for decades why is it so wrong to expect of that individual to speak atleast the basic words like to the auto or a vendor
I say this because i know people who have stayed here since birth and still just go kannad gothilla

The government has lost the case 3 times in the court. I am not sure if namma state government is intrested in winning the case. May be they are just fooling the people of karnataka. Make a strong leagal case and implement the rule. The state government makes rules with loopholes so that the other side wins the case in the court.

Why dont we kannadigas ask the outsiders nicely? Vandalizing, making them feel insecure will benefit no one. Dont threaten, but just make a strict request. Teach them rather then force them.

It should be kannada and any other language and it is useful. In U.P. or M.P. thy have English and Hindi and it's useful for local as well people travelling from other states.

Also, for private properties such as gated communities, they can write whatever language they feel like. It can be Marathi, Hindi, Mandarin, French, Japanese, etc. You can't tell people what to write on their own property.
