BG Music:
Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morissette: two of the musical symbols of those years.
The slide in this song always gave me the "Stuck in the Middle" feel. Cool song
So true.
I never noticed the similarities until you pointed it out but the comparison is dead in.
👍🏼
This song captures a real SoCal mood in the mid-90s. It's not so much about asking the deep questions, but it paints a great picture of a certain kind of person.
What exactly was this SoCal mood that your saying this song apparently captured back in 94? Maybe I was young but I was there and it says nothing to me. The difference then compared was the music was excellent, everybody had access to that.
@@KyleReeseCel2029 I was in college at the time. There was, at least in my circle of friends, a great restlessness: a feeling of disconnect between actions and outcomes, as if we had all this great potential bottled up waiting to be unleashed but nothing truly meaningful would ever come from it. We were, in a word, aimless.
In that mindset, it was a perfectly reasonable thing to do, sitting in a bar drinking beers at noon on a Tuesday, watching "adults" futilely scurry around in the rat race just to maintain some sort of inevitable status quo. Just look at those suckers getting dirty water on their suits.
I don't think that attitude changed for me until 9/11 happened. Before that, life was aimless but at least there was a sense of order and stability; after, it became dark, depressing, and uncertain.
The funny thing is that the video was shot in Clarksville, TN. A few miles northwest from Nashville.
This is painting an exact picture of when she got to California. At a place where she used to jam with these dudes. They were unofficially ( or maybe officially, can't remember) called The Tuesday Night Music Club. Which became the title of her debut album. These guys just took her in, and what came out of those jam sessions were a lot of the songs on said debut album. And these guys never got writing credits or any money for this. Anyway, those scenes were taken directly from there.
@@davidblauyoutube I'm just seeing your reply now. Well you have 10 thumbs up so you apparently hit a nerve. I frankly don't really see how that mindset is exclusive to any area or place in time. It could be anywhere at any time especially an area that just got out of war. It sounds like a stereotype of younger gen x from wikipedia. I don't see what would have caused that mindset to be pervasive. If we are talking about a mindset in 1994 in Southern California representing that area. I would expect some specific events, politics or culture to produce that mindset. That I could understand. Otherwise it just sounds like normal thoughts of existentialism and teenage cope with responsibility. Besides the 94 earthquake that messed up out house, it was one a great time of my life.
I remember when this came out in the mid 90's. Had never heard of Crow at that point, but my 12 year old self approved of this song.
April 1994 to be exact. It was a huge hit and I was 14 years old. ✨😃✨
She caught my eye the first time in ‘92 as a backup singer for Don Henley. She did a nice cover of J5’s “I want you back.”
Yes! I was 13 and I remember the first time I heard this on the radio. I was hooked
I worked in a record store back then & that album sold almost no copies for the first 6-9 months, maybe even a little longer. After this single came out, it absolutely flew off the shelf.
Hell of a way to start a career! I know Leaving Las Vegas was her 1st single but this one was the one that kicked!
Brad & Lex, you’ll love her "A Change Would Do You Good", “Soak Up The Sun” and “Can’t Cry Any More”!!!!
She had one of the best debut albums(Tuesday Night Music Club).
Such a refreshing sound, especially in the 90s! She was a backup singer for Michael Jackson early on.
edit- Sheryl has won 9 Grammy Awards and sold over 50 million albums.
I love can't cry any more.
She was also a back up singer for Don Henley. Don did a small concert for VH1 and Sheryl Crow sang back up on one of his songs.
The song was: In the Garden of Ahla.
Also Tomorrow Never Dies, def in the top 5 of all James Bond themes.
She's one of the best female rock artists ever. Prob her most radio friendly song that broke her out.
I think the song is just meant to be a vignette of a certain kind of (probably musicians') lifestyle in Los Angeles in the '90s-people living for the moment, for fun, for experiences, not worrying about and planning for the future.
The 1990s is my favorite decade for music in my lifetime because of the diverse array of singer-songwriters who expressed themselves individually rather than formulaically. My favorite artist Tori Amos was singing abstract, sophisticated piano-based compositons about the traumas of religious upbringings while Sheryl Crow was singing about working-class musicians bumming around L.A. on guitar with a blues-rock spirit and a country twang, and radio stations that played them were also playing grunge, pop, hiphop, rap, hard and soft rock and piano ballads all mixed together. And then in the 2000s, suddenly it was all EDM and Autotune.
oh......just shut up
“That’s a long time to have fun”😂😂😂Oh Brad, u r killin me❤
Datsuns, record stores, match books? LOL! My how things change. The pedal steel fills give the song a "Stuck in the Middle with You" feel, so country-rock-pop maybe. Check out her song "If It Makes You Happy".
Deliberately poppy - but not shallow. Best enjoyed as part of the album. Sheryl's early stuff is worth anyone's time.
Sheryl Is Still Putting Out Great Music Today.
After I first heard this song I went and bought the cd, been a Sheryl Crow fan ever since....
Local girl from here in Missouri. Graduated from University of Missouri, taught music at a local high school, and a cancer surivivor.
You can NEVER go wrong with Sheryl Crow!! ❤️❤️
Tuesday Night Music Club........ the entire record is great!
I can just picture sitting in some dive bar having a beer at noon and striking up conversations with complete strangers. Good times!
👍❤🤙
She plays a variety of genres of music . She was a backup singer for Michael Jackson
I always liked this tune. Its catchy and well constructed . Cheryl. 💋⚘
Very popular and many good songs and videos from her, '90s and '00s. 🎶. She's like country rock, alternative.
Sheryl Crow is all sorts of awesome! Great discography to explore!!
Sheryl Crow was very very good.
BTW I loved Brad saying "that's a long time to be having fun!" Cracked me up.
I saw her in concert when this was new. She roamed the stage playing almost everything. She was obviously in charge of every person onstage.
Brad, I don't think the song is about chemically assisted partying per se, but simply enjoying the moment. Forget the car wash, enjoy a beer and a stupid conversation with a stranger. Happy Tuesday!
Brad was focused on the sexual, which is why he was taken aback by the idea of “having fun” from morning to night.
This is one of the catchiest toons ever.
Man, this song was EVERYWHERE back in '94. The lyrics were adapted from a poem called "Fun" by a guy name Wyn Cooper.
94, 95 what fantastic years.
Her first album is one of my favourite debuts of the 90s. All killer, no filler, crammed full of great choons, strong lyrics, superb singing, and pin sharp playing from a crack band. This is nowhere near the best song on it IMO: Run Baby Run, Strong Enough, Leaving Las Vegas, and We Do What We Can are just brilliant.
This song was HUGE. It was probably the biggest song the year it came out.
This is one of those songs that I couldn't get out of my head back when it used to play on the radio.
Fell in love with Sheryl when this came out.
I was 12 when this came out and I remember it getting a lot of radio play at the time, along with the Friends TV show theme song.
I like a good beer buzz early in the morning . My favorite line .
Weather Channel is a deeper cut by her that I still find haunting.
Infamous Sheryl Crow....she sang back up for Michael Jackson.....shout out to Toy Matinee , ya'll should check out " Last plane out" ....
You must see her in a live concert. She Rocks!
My favorite Sheryl Crow song is Strong Enough. Such a moving song.
Sheryl Crow! A true Hipster!
Always liked this song
And I still drink beer at noon any day
That blooming guitar sound is called “Stuck In the middle with you” by: Steelers Wheelers.
The verse that talks about people washing their Datsuns really dates when this song was written considering that Datsun changed to Nissan in 1981.
I think the song came out around 1994 ish.
Not sure why she used Datsuns.
Maybe she felt it flowed better than if she had used Nissans or Fords instead?
@@neilmartin99 Just looked it up and the music was written by Crow and her band but the lyrics were adapted from a poem named "Fun" that was written in 1987 by a poet named Wyn Cooper who was born in 1957.
So the explanation is that she didn't write the line about the Datsuns, Cooper did in 1987 which was only 6 years after the change from Datsun to Nissan.
@@otterrufus Thanks for that.
Seemed odd to me as well but figured it had something to do with the flow of the line.
Good find.
Always felt this song had the same sound as "Stuck in the Middle with You" by Steelers Wheel.
I remember watching and listening to it when it came out.
I don't know if it's just me but she reminded me of Elaine from Seinfeld in this video and I thought the vibe fits Elaine's character.
Sheryl Crow's fantastic!
Such a satisfying song to listen ! I L.O.V.E this one !
This started out as a poem written by a guy in LA. She put it to music. He did ok w that.
She did the right thing. She gave Wyn Cooper a songwriting credit so he'd make money off it at least. But it's still pretty funny how much of it is from the poem
My fave Crow song! I lenjoy the story it tells!
Sheryl was one of those artists who spent years and years to become an overnight success. Definitely listen to more of "The Tuesday Night Music Club".
Luv this song! Haven't heard it in ages....thank you!
I remember when this song came out one of the MTV video jocks had a thing for Sheryl Crow and her mouth.
Thank You Brad & Lex !!!!!!!! It's really good Sherryl Crow !!!!!!!! YEAHHHHHHHHHHH 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You can't say you been drinking all day if you don't start in the morning
This the song that everyone heard back in the day without even knowing it. The hook..Late 90s vibes man
Holy wow, hearing this took me back to an exact moment in 1995. 😆
Brad is very concerned about the amount of fun being had. Too much fun.
Just a simple song about hanging around a dive bar in L.A. early in the day drinking beer, observing the people and wishing for something fun to do. Its not deep, but its darn good.
It's a variation of what's called "Talking Blues."
You should definitely listen to Sheryl Crow - Home and the video. Beautiful song 🎵
This song creates such a scene.
This genre is called "feel-good music," and there are a lot of songs from all different genres that populate it. Also, that Roxy theater is the one in Clarksville, TN...shoutout to my old home.
There was a techno remix for the dancefloors !!
Sheryl Crow is one talented lady , super great on guitar , base . Shes sang with so many other great artist but kills it solo as well. You guys should really deep dive more of her you wont be sorry :) .
She was using " country' musical instruments that you don't often hear outside of country music. Most of her pieces go for a mood and don't try to fit into any genre. I just think of her as a mid 90's artist. This song always conjures mental images of L.A.
Saw her in Tucson casino outdoors, really fun.
This is the song that made her famous. Then she started cranking out hit after hit.
i have always loved this song, also i love how you guys move to the music swaying but somehow never actually coming together. keep it up i love your channel
The alb is the Tuesday night music club named after a group of stellar musicians. This album was saved by the great Kevin Gilbert and he is the reason for the complex genre bending sound.
Kevin is the real reason she went anywhere and he was brushed aside.
@@Easy_Skanking you got that right!
@@Easy_Skanking Shaming of the true
@@marshman96 Great album!!
Ha .. there were many mornings I watched that sun come up over Santa Monica Blvd, Sunset Blvd, Melrose… Beverly… 😂
Singing about a wild time? She's singing about sitting in a bar on a Tuesday at noon talking to someone and getting a buzz on...seems pretty chill to me.
I never understood the idea of washing your car on your lunch break, but always sloved the song and video.
(The video also gave me a new appreciation for lips.)
The 90's was the best in my opinion regardless of genre. Every genre of music 🔥
Tuesday Night Music Club was her debut album, and named for the very talented musicians she jammed with on Tues nights - this song being the most popular - tons of radio airtime. This song is about chilling in the middle of the week (I could relate, since my weekends were Mon, Tue, and Wed) and hanging at the bar, or anywhere - while everyone else is busy with the 9-5 M-F, it's very liberating. 'Leaving Las Vegas' is another good one from the album, but shrouded in real-life tragedy.
This is in my top 5 karaoke songs to do!! Love you, Sheryl!! ❤️
It's rock just plain rock .
"Stuck in the Middle with You" by Stealer's Wheel if you want to know where that groove came from.
1994 was such a bangin year for music. This song fit right in there.
Lex ,il tuo sorriso è splendido
Childhood crush, love her
All the radio stations in the 90's and early 2000's commonly referred to her music and other in this style as "Modern Rock" (still didn't know back then what to call it either lol )
She mentioned Datsun in the lyrics and I love it. Datsun is now Nissan.
I've always wondered why empty beer bottles are spinning on the floor. Having been a bartender, that kinda place she describes is a dive...I would been fired for letting empties on the floor. Love this song for the vibe, the lyrics, the story it visualizes to me.I see downtrodden alcoholics in a dive joint watching the world.LoTs of imagination in this song.
Well the bartender was spending more time studying the want ads so presumably he was looking for a better job and didn't care if he got fired
That's exactly right. The lyrics were based on (or copied from) a poem that's about down-and-out alcoholics sneering at the outside world. The song sounds happy, but the lyrics are more complicated than that
George Thorogood only quotes old Blues songs. This young lady is creative and has a nice cool style.
It's a weird song because most of the lyrics (except the chorus) are based on a poem called "Fun" by Wyn Cooper about two alcoholic dudes hating on all the "normal" people. It has a real mean streak to it. But Sheryl Crow and her song writers turned it into something else. But you can still tell if you listen to the words, there's something else going on...
This is a great vibe of easy going partying in the great So Cal. Another song of hers that captures the whole vibe is 2002's Soak Up The Sun.
When I say you couldn't escape this song when it was out, I'm not lying. It was *everywhere* in the Fall of 1994.
her breakthrough....very Ricky Lee Jones vibe
Her song is a vignette of images of life in LA. For another tune with a similar feel, check out Bran Van 3000 and their song Drinkin' in LA.
Fun song back then. Pop that wont last. She's gone
This is an amazing track,my all time favourite 💜💜💜😍
Whole albumn good
I'm glad that I first heard this song on the radio rather than seeing the video because it paints such a vivid picture, and for me, the video interferes with that a little bit.
I don't get the sense that anyone in the song is actually having fun. They're *talking* about having fun, but they're just day-drinking in a dive bar in Los Angeles.
There is an Eagles influence to the sound, and I believe Don Henley may have played some role in this.
Another song from this time period--and also an L.A. snapshot with Eagles influences--is "Don't Mean Nothing" by Richard Marx.
The early 90's was an incubator for great music....soooo many good bands and music.
My childhood song of "fun" lol
Fantastic, family unit great play and conversations instead of constantly hearing as the world burns, I need a break and I get it from Brad and Lex swell people!
She was a voice teacher/coach before she became famous
Love the reactions as always. This is more about the 90's music scene in L.A. back then. I just love her voice.
You should also check-out another 90's rocker; Melissa Etheridge - "I'm The Only One" and "Come to my Window". Both fantastic songs and chart toppers. There were some amazing female rockers back in the nineties.
Iconic.
“It aint no country club either.” 😂😂😂
I have found myself from the very beginning fascinated with Sheryl Crow's mouth - it's a whole package deal though, also amazed by her many & myriad talents - singer, song writer, accomplished musician - catch her live & you will ask yourself why do we have autotune in the world when there are still people who can pull it off live & unaided.
But I would also cheerfully crawl naked across miles & miles of burning desert strewn with broken glass & used hypodermic needles just to touch a plastic bag that might once have contained a pair of her knickers - but that's got a lot more to do with my shallowness as a human being than it has to do with her massive talent.
I'll get my coat.
Pop Country/Country Pop
Possibly the catchiest song of the 90s.
