  • 2014 VW Jetta with an extended crank, rich exhaust, and a single cylinder misfire, using a verus pro to analyze secondary ign waveforms (very misleading in this case) and injector control, and using a fuel gauge and simple visual checks to identify a leaky fuel inj.

    Having a wet plug would add to the varying waveforms on secondary, awesome video I'll definitely be tuning in on your channel!!

      Thanks Alex for the support I'm glad you enjoyed. I agree too a very fueled up spark plug/cylinder would change my secondary ign waveform. It really looked like a lean misfire. But I've never seen secondary ign with a fueled up cylinder I wonder if that's what it looks like when it's so fueled up.

    what blows your mind is how fast its dumping fuel. You were going to pulse test all 4 right and compare numbers?

    • @PositiveLeadDiagnostics
      @PositiveLeadDiagnostics  7 лет назад

      At first I thought about it. Because I thought I had a lean misfire but it was opposite. But the rail pressure was leaking down so quickly it made that test irrelevant and almost impossible.

      This engine uses a speed density system. Meaning it doesn't have a MAF. It uses TPS, MAP, Temp, and other data to fuel the engine with a pre-programmed fuel map.
      This engine has been around since the 90's. Great engine, and simple like fuel injection cars were back then.

    I had about 74000 miles when I got the random misfire , cylinder 2 and 3 misfire. It ended up being the "distributor" idk what it's called now. My buddy has same vehicle and It was a burnt insulation from a wire where the injector wires are at.

      Thankfully it's an easy fix. Mine started going out between Phoenix and Las Vegas. Nearest town where anything could be done was Wikenburg; 60 mi away. Every time it misfired too much it would trigger the EPC light making it impossible to even cruise at a reasonable highway speed so I just kept resetting the computer with my app on the phone. I did heavy throttle downhill to climb big hills and barely touched the gas climbing them. Made it all the way to the 303 and Grand Ave, 23 miles from home before it gave completely. Get the autozone one, lifetime warranty. 200k miles with a 5 speed manual, it's been a great car outside the oil cooler not lasting.

      @@AltruisticWarrior AutoZone? That Chiner junk? You'll be swapping that coil out every 12-18 months. Just buy the OEM and be done with it. The OEM coil pack can be found on FCP Euro for under 150.00 if you buy the factory direct Beru one that has the VW name and part number scratched off.

    Hey quick Tom question I have an EVAP LEAK very small leak code and I know its the purge Valve, Ive been breaking my head looking for it and im assuming its in the center but I could be wrong but I dont know how to open the engine cover can you make a video pr perhaps a small guideline on how to open it? or showing where the valve is. Thanks a lot brother

      What’s your engine code?

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto 2 года назад

      If you have the same engine as the one in this video, the purge valve is clipped to the side of the intake pointing at the coolant tank. You can't miss it. Has two hoses running to it. One that goes into the back of the manifold, and one that comes from the body of the car.

I recently replaced all four spark plugs, and now the car starts a little better, but I still get an EPC light and a flashing engine light as well. I also can’t find the MAF sensor for the life of me. I guess it never had one to begin with.

    Injectors are a common problem on these engines. Hopefully customer replaced all four. Outside of that, these engines are great! Albeit, underpowered by today's standards.

      Getting a tuner chip and slapping a K&N filter improved the throttle response and stops the car from feeling jumpy during acceleration. I daily both my 2.0 Jetta and 2.5 Altima and they both feel the same.

    Interesting issue! However, I don't think your lean misfire is being caused by low rail pressure. Did you check the pressure while it's running? The fuel pump can keep up just fine. The lean misfire is most likely caused by the fuel trims being pegged negative as a result of the raw gas being dumped into the exhaust stream. Would be curious to see the fuel trims too. Great vids!

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 7 лет назад

      Oh and if the injector shuts off due to the misfire, but is still spraying some fuel due to the pintle not seating, that could very well cause a lean burn pattern on cyl 2 as well...just brainstorming :)

    • @PositiveLeadDiagnostics
      @PositiveLeadDiagnostics  7 лет назад +1

      The thing is that my misfire on cyl2 was never lean. The fuel inj was dumping fuel all the time because it was stuck open. Even after the computer shut off control. Any pressure in the rail was always relieved through cyl 2 inj. I wish I could have looked at a few more data pids to gather information but this thing was dumping so much fuel. Now I wonder is that what secondary ign looks like with a mixture that is just way to rich. In this case because it was dumping fuel all the time Does too much fuel give the same effect as not enough? I'm not sure because I've never seen secondary ign with a cyl that has way to much fuel like this. Thanks for your support and input on this channel. I'm glad you enjoy the videos.

      i saw a scannerdanner vid, when he disabled the spark(to create a misfire)..raw fuel was dumped into the exhaust..and guess what? fuel trim didnt go negative after that..he said raw is not rich..raw is about HC..rich is about CO and lack of O2

    • @LynxStarAuto

      The problem is the fuel injectors are almost 300 each, and it is highly recommended to replace all 4. Fuel injectors were always problematic on these engines. Good chance they want you to replace all of them in one shot. To save you labor. And diminish the chances of a comeback. I work on these for a living, and that's exactly how I would present the repair to you. Every time one of these injectors fail. The entire labor has to be repeated for each injector. Just wiser to pay labor once and do all four.

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto 2 года назад +1

      @@CaptainRealm ? Have you looked at the car market recently? 1100 bucks is chump change on a vehicle that is paid off.

      @@LynxStarAuto Thanks for responding Grabriel. I know its been a while since I posted this but I actually was able to fix my car back in January of this year. It turns out my problem wasn't the fuel injectors which I suspected them to be also. My problem was a hole in the carbon canister which was causing the evap leak. I also had a very dirty throttle body which was causing the car to stutter. It's been almost 6 months since I got it fixed and no more check engine light or stutter! With 105k miles my Jetta runs like new. I'm glad I only paid about $600 total over the course of a year trying to figure out what it was. Found a good honest mechanic who was able to get it done for a really decent price.

    • @LynxStarAuto

      @@Agownsrs2 That's good to hear. These engines are bulletproof and have been around since the 90's. It's very important to find a guy that is honest, but more importantly understands these vehicles. I got my start at a VW dealer back in 2002. Worked there for almost 8 years before I went independent. I always tell everyone. Guys like us are a necessary evil in the auto industry. These cars just require a different approach, tooling, and equipment. Not every guy out there is cut out for them, and that's ok.
