- They used to be everywhere in California. Who can forget the commercials? Who can forget that name!? They are still around but now they are only in Northern California. Here is a brief history about the grocery store.Lucky Stores is an American supermarket chain founded in San Leandro, California, in 1935. Lucky is currently operated by The Save Mart Companies in Northern California.

I miss Lucky store and the store brand Lady Lee. I also remember the commercial jingle from the early 90's "Come to Lucky, get it Lucky, get it at a low low price." I remember buying a weeks worth of groceries back in 1991. Now a days, $20.00 would just be enough for three meals for one day.
We had one in Huntington beach, before it was Luckys, it was the Boys market when I first moved to HB in 1978. Good times.
I remember Alpha Beta/ Market Basket/ Food Giant
thanks for watching
Oh yeah. My mom and I shopped there all the time.
There was 2 Lucky’s in Glendale one on Central AVE and Chevy chase DR and the other one on Allen Ave and Glenoaks BLVD ! The Central/Chevy Chase Location is now a Joann’s Fabrics while the Allen/Glenoaks location is now a Smart and Final extra!
Thanks for watching and I miss those Lucky commercials.
If only we could go back to those days ..
Use to luv that store back in the 80s had everything in that store food clothes toys bicycles. Had one in Lynwood / South Gate border on Atlantic and Abbott me and my grandmother used to shop there great memories!!!
Thanks for sharing that memory with me. Hope you subscribed, I got more videos coming out. Check out all of my other videos too.
I remember that store on Atlantic BLVD. It had a curve shape to it, and you had to go around to the back of the store to get inside, It had no entrance from Atlantic BLVD.
Oh man we had one on Torrance Blvd. And Crenshaw. I remember us going there and Super A when my aunt worked there
thanks for sharing your memories
One thing about growing up in Westminster near Heil and Beach Blvd 1967-1979, is how little was there. Also, poking around, how much stuff I thought was "there" was built about the time we moved there. I was only 3 1/2. South Coast mall was the nearest big mall. It was brand new, but I didn't know that. Fountain Valley high school was built when we moved there, etc, etc. There were no Lucky's nearby, I think we went all the way to Long Beach at first, but they built one in Westminster or Garden Grove a lot closer at some point, and that and Fedco became our two main grocery stores.
LUCKY is where i met my first wife. somehow i regret walking in the that. Great video.
thanks...I guess you weren't "Lucky" on that one...j/k
We were a Lucky’s family growing up in Carson,(LA) California and attached to the supermarket was a Stacey’s pharmacy
Lucky's is still up in the Bay Area.
There was a Lucky store in Bell Ca, my cousin, who was 15, and me, who was 13, used to do pop bottle return stacking outside back in 1974, for this guy who worked there and was supposed to be doing it himself but was too lazy. His girlfriend would come by and he would talk to her while we were working. When we were done he would pay us in pop bottles and then we would just return them to the inside of the store to get our money. Not the best way to make a little bit of coin, but much better than being broke and we loved it.

If you remember Mayfair and Big Bear Markets, how about doing a video on them. I remember these stores in San Diego Ca back in the 70s. This was a great video. Thank you.
thank you for your suggestions, I will put it on my list.
I remember my mom used to love shopping in the yellow generic section in Luckys. All the boxes were yellow. lol
thanks for sharing your memories
I clearly remember the "yellow wrap" corn chips and oatmeal raisin cookies! The chips were good, but the cookies were hard as rocks. We had to stick a piece of bread in the package to soften them up. 😂
@@jancw thanks for sharing your memories
My whole career was in the grocery store, first luckys..where I started as a boxboy in 1973....retired in 2019...
thanks for sharing the memory.
How nice is the union pension ?
Fuck im getting old. I rememebe being fascinated by the logo as a kid
Went to the one in south Ontario
We still have them. 😂
Sadly I wish someone would have Bought A&P one of the Greatest Grocery stores Which I was Proud to Have worked for shopped there and as a Kid went with My Mom shopping at. Their biggest Mistake was Buying Pathmark it Killed them.
I,live in Detroit, Michigan. A&P has bought the Detroit Based, Farmer Jack Supermarkets. A&P had rebranded A&P to Farmer Jack Supermarkets, and went out of business.
who wouldn't? lol but yeah, the Lucky near where i live just closed like 3 yrs ago. The town of El Centro California
thanks for sharing that info. Lucky are no longer in socal.
@@EricCProductions76 Yes it's a shame. I read the remaining ones are up north near the San Francisco area etc. Correct me if i'm wrong.
@@techminds1579 they are up in north cali
Pretty good video. One thing was incorrect, when Albertsons’s “bought” American stores. Albertsons and American Stores “merged”. Although Albertsons wrote a big check to pay down debt of American Stores, it was a merger due to the way the Employee Stock Purchase Plan was written.
You also forgot to mention why Lucky Stores sold off other companies... to stay off a hostile take over.
And lastly, Lucky Stores was the greatest company to work for, until it was taken over by American Stores... and then when Albertsons took it over and changed the name (the worst decision ever).
Thank you for the clarification. You definitely have first hand knowledge. I was only a kid when it switched over. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed, more videos coming soon.
i worked for albertsons as a truck driver, when we inherited lucky? it was a nightmare! ratty cab overs, stores w no docks etc/ the seniority list was dovetailed and little by little all the crap stores were divested.
@@allfiredup200099 Lucky Stores (American Stores) was making more profits than Albertsons was with fewer stores. Albertsons closed stores that didn't need to be closed. Those stores didn't lose money, they broke-even. And by closing those "under preforming" stores, the buying power was cut. Not being able to buy large amounts means not buying items at a better deal. Again, worst decision ever was "Changing the name from Lucky to Albertsons" why? Lucky Stores had the highest market share in Southern California. It cost a huge amount to change over 200 stores from one name to the other. Then lost customers. Albertsons was supposed to change all the other divisions to Albertsons, but realized what a huge mistake it was doing it to Lucky.
I saw a lot of good Albertsons Employees lose their jobs because of the way Albertsons did it. And I also learned that Albertsons (and Lucky) at the time lied to their employees and also our own union lied to their members. But Albertsons lied to their employees and made them work off the clock at store level all the time.
Again, worst thing that ever happened to a great company, Lucky Stores was a great company.
Saw a Lucky store in the background of an original Charlies Angels episode. When Farrah was one of the 3 angels.
awesome, thanks for watching
