Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

In response to my last comment first I have to say during lambing and while your pregnant you did the 2 am to even 4am lambing and having very young children who wake up early to deal with. Having said that you are a super mum.! My observation so far is where are all the males to help out with midnight to 6 am help??. I know you grew up farming and sheep but what I don't like is the negativity from certain people who disregard or speak negativity to you and I've heared it and I don't like it. That's why I said you need to change to improve your channel to grow going forward.🙂

Nell is looking at you for instruction/reassurance. When she's looking at you as if to say "what mum?" you should look her in the eye and give a clear command. I'd also encourage you to use different tones of voice like you would with the kids: if it always sounds urgent/angry it's all the same. And when she doesn't lie down when you ask stay with her and make her lie down. And lots of reward when she does what you want her to do. Lots of verbal reward.

Oliver needs put in his place. He needs to let you finish your work in the field without trying to take over. The dog was doing what you wanted and it was all going fine in that opening bit of the video but he had to butt in.
The lambs are all growing quickly now after that tough start in the rainy, cold first few weeks.
Lambs are all mighty fine and well worth the battle of watery mouth and the weather yes! Love looking round them now in the sunshine makes farming so much happier, yes he's a dog man so his instincts kick in 🤣🤣
Nell will become an excellent sheepdog
She will and with Oliver watching my wrong moves, I am sure I won't be that bad to spoil her lol 😅😆

Yes, it's very difficult and most farmers are in the same situation probably 90 percent of farmers are in this situation either bigger scale or smaller.

the only thing that i can say is. reckon they could do it without you. its a team effort. what , they say you aint cut out for it. you do what you have to do and more. get another lady in. 2.2.. case solved. rock on sam.
They aren't a problem 😂😂 I've worked with them both for 16 years, so I am used to them, but yeah, they could probably do it without me, but in reality underneath it's easier with me 🤣🤣

Does the farm not have any sheep pens?
No, just that race, we can't get a grant for one as we don't claim the payments, and it's a public road through, we've managed with how we are doing but sheep pens would be brilliant.

I have watched your channel for weeks now and during lambing. May I give you some advice because certain vlogs where I have heard derogative language to the sheep from people. Calling a sheep b...ch I've even thought I heard that word from your young son recently, I hope I got it wrong and recently having the children running around with lambs. These tiny lambs would have been terrified yes the children had their fun but not the wee lambs. Now I hear you say shut up to Nellie. I understand your very pregnant and understand the financial strain but if you want to grow your channel which is why I joined you need to make some adjustments because I'm looking at leaving your channel.!
I think you should realise Sam on her channel shows real life of farming and so what if she called a sheep a naughty word !!! It's life there are worse things going on in this world than a Hill farmer calling a sheep a very naughty word 😅😅
I personally think it's great that she captures everything as it was filmed life ie real and it doesn't come with a censorship button in the real world!!!
