On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Phoenix AZ on 4-1-22.
We're looking at a 1970 American Motors AMC Mark Donohue Javelin SST in Bay Shore Blue Paint. The car comes with the factory 390 CI V8 engine and an automatic transmission.
Dan Curtis is showcasing his Customers car after his Company restored this car. There were only 2501 of the “Mark Donohue Javelin SST” produced from American Motors Corporation and this one of them. Dan shares when he was young he was introduced to an AMX and the speed impressed him. He was hooked to the American Motors Brand, and has had many American Motors performance cars.
He has a restoration shop for American Motors Corporation cars with many hard to find parts. The Shop is called AZ AMC Restorations 10728 N 96th Ave, Peoria, AZ 85345 Phone # 1-602 317-2018 Facebook page amcmusclecars

Hi, Lou! Well, today is the Fourth of July and since this is a new video of a special edition Javelin I figured this was probably a Dan Curtis presentation as I clicked on it. Dan certainly knows his AMC muscle cars, but while I've never ridden in a Javelin, somehow I doubt it would feel like getting into a Toyota! LOL! If anything I would bet Mark Donohue felt like he was commandeering an actual SST! That said, he's done an impeccable job on the restoration and this customer's satisfaction is guaranteed!
BTW, one interesting little detail I notice is that this car carries both the previous "AM" logo and the just-adopted red, white and blue triangle-and-rectangle logo. Anyway, many thanks to you and Dan for showing this rare racer's delight on America's birthday (and yours)!

My neighbor had one when I was a kid. It was purple with white stripes With 401 engine. His his brother was highway patrol and his parents owned The local Dealership for American motor. If I recall He said it had 315 gears and he and his brother had it 145 miles per hour. Great memories growing up looking at that car just 2 houses away. I think it was a 1972 Model. I used to like looking at the factory tag ometer and I believe the speedometer went to 140 I don't Think it was 160. Great videos. Thank you.

Lou, please accept this ridiculously small token of thanks for all your great content. I love anything AMC-related but admittedly it's a relatively narrow interest among car enthusiasts and therefore just about everything else you put out is educational and fun for me. Also: I know you have a young(er) person helping you with editing and posting --- so, not that you're incapable of doing it yourself, but maybe that person can help you implement better audio for your guests? Just a super-friendly suggestion, truly. Thank you. Anthony C in Palos Heights, Illinois (Edited to add: Oops, I thought my PayPal comment to you would be private, but it's OK. Keep up the good work!)

What a pleasant surprise to see this video on the AMC Javelin (Mark Donohue edition). It was, in my opinion, sad that AMC didn't sell more Javelins and AMXs, as they were beautiful cars inside and out. Thank you Lou, for showing us Dan Curtis' beautifully restored car.
EDIT: Hey Lou, I came very close to buying a new 1975 AMC Pacer. I thought it was a really cool car (hey, I was 18 at the time) but then I took it for a test drive and realized what a piece of garbage it was. 'Pedal to the metal' and the car accelerated so slowly, and then brake pedal to the floorboard and it felt like it had no brakes (they were non-power). I bought a new '75 Nova coupe instead, and had seven great years with it. Those were the days, weren't they? Oh sorry, you aren't that old 😄

I'm doing AC retrofit in my '76 Valiant. Using the box & controls out of a parts '76 Valiant, but the compressor, alternator (with the associated wiring & regulator), and brackets are from an '89 Gran Fury cop car. The condenser, lines, dryer, under dash AC & heater core pieces are from Classic Auto Air.
It does add some weight, but being that I have moved from the PNW to the SE (glad to have left, too!) it is needed.
But it is "Factory," if you will- just optimizes the efficiency, lower weight & engine drag

What a great car and looks great in that shade of blue. It sounds fantastic with those side pipes and that rear spoiler really gives the car a racy looks, gotta give the "traffic light to traffic light" loser something to look at, Lol. AMC got it right with this car for sure and one of the things that I like is how they tucked the front and rear bumpers up to the body so that they appear as bodywork, that's the way it was done before the 5mph crash mandates had the bumpers pushed out away from the body. Nice one Lou!!!

I wish someone could explain why power windows are so EXTREMELY RARE on AMC cars... I know they were a budget marque, but even their upper echelon models, like the Matador Broughams, Ambassadors and special edition cars like this one... all seem to be devoid of such a popular American option.

AMC Ambassadors had power windows alll the way back to the mid 60s but they were never offered in the smaller body model as far as I know. We have done conversions on AMXs and Javelins but they were not available with power windows from the factory. By and large, AMC buyers were very "frugal" and were often unwilling to pay for extras like electric wipers, power steering and power brakes.

Great overviews:: interestingly one of CLOSE FRIENDS for many years was Mechanic at AMC DEALER: running 1969 AMX/(*??)390/4 SPD/ Lemon Green in DRAGSTRIPS,& we stored in Our second Garage for a year (1974-5)…Oddly, my first new car was that loaded 1970 Dodge Coronet 500/Ralley Red, Black Vinyl top, etc…. The next door, Dodge Dealer did have a few AMC RED/ WhiteBlues/ Rebels(?) in some kind of PROMOTIONS a few times, strangely. We could not afford the HEMI GTX,Challenger/ CUDA,TORINO TALLEDEGAS/ BUICK GSX/ GTO stage 4 … Though, I spent time considering a 1970 CHALLENGER **RT/SE/ 4 speed/383/ TRIPLE green, & every **OPTION DODGE HAD ON it..& not like Green color.

It was green and 390 also. But it was optioned up, with white top and interior. Both gorgeous cars. Have a couple pictures of me as a baby in the first one. The 1969 Super Stock AMXs dominated many race tracks running NHRA sanctioned events for a couple of years. And even your average 390 AMX or Javelin with just a little tweaking quickly got down into the mid 13s and with some additional go fast parts like a better cam and headers they would dip into the high 12s. Shirley Shahan raced the Dragon Lady and Lou Downing raced Pete's Patriot both of which won multiple national titles starting with SS D and eventually being moved all the way up to SS A. I own SS AMX #52, the last SS AMX made. It was raced as American Dream and was a 3 time NHRA regional champion. It is slated to be reviewed here on Lou's channel once after I get the last couple of items finished up on its rotisserie restoration
