On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago on 7-12-22.
We're looking at a 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 in Bright Gold Metallic Paint. The car has a 302 CI V8 engine, and a 4 speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Mike Novak. Mike’s had this car since 2000. Mike shares that he purchased a new 1970 Boss 302 and enjoyed the car. His sold that car, however missed it. He started his search for another one, and after several years looking for another one, he found the right one for him in 2000. He’s happy to say he loves driving a 1970 Boss 302 again.
    ENJOY!

A co-worker took me and a couple others into Wilsonville, Oregon to get lunch one day in 1973 or '74. We lost no time getting to our destination! It was plenty fast. The Boss was orange with the black accents. None of us had any inkling that this car would some day be a collectors item. It's hard to believe this car is 52 years old. Where does the time go?

Lou, this Boss 302 takes me back to 1981 when I was stationed at USCG Base Gloucester City, NJ. GC was the Captain of the Port of Philadelphia, which encompassed the entire Delaware River and Bay, big, big area. Alot of floating units there, buoy tenders, search and rescue boats. Attached were several hundred enlisted and officers. I was a junior petty officer in those days with a fairly new Mustang 2.3 which I had modified, using the 2.3 turbo engine out of an old junker fox body Mustang. I did the engine swap in the Base's hobby shop; a small set of old garages set together. Not many folks used the facility except for junior gearheads like myself. On the far end of one of the garage stalls sat a 1970 Boss 302; Grabber Orange, rear window slats, Magnum 500 rims. Although I was still in my 20's, a childhood hero of mine was Mark Donohue and his Sunoco Z28 Camaros. So I knew exactly what that Boss was all about. Knew all about Parnelli Jones and George Follmer & the great Trans Am series of the late 60's and early 70's. The 302 Boss motor was out, sitting as the car was, all dusty and neglected. I knew the owner was stationed on the Red Oak, which was moored directly in front of the hobby shop stalls. Never saw the owner there working on the car and the last I knew of the car, it was still sitting there when I got orders for my next unit in late 83. Today, only the large base building stands. The entire shops and garage complex was turn down. To this day, I wondered what happened to that Grabber Orange Boss 302. Back in those days, young people like me were concerned about fuel economy, not 290 horse trans am racers built for the street. If only I had the foresight to skip all that, buy that thing and keep it until the times and tide, changed!

Those were extraordinarily good looking cars. It's amazing that any of the BOSS 302's have survived. They had such a low survivability rate. A friend of mine bought a BOSS 302 new and didn't take him long to destroy it. They could get away with you pretty quick.

Wow! Your Mustang looks just like my husband's 70 Boss from back in the day. He called the color 'competition gold. '
My 70 Boss color was grabber green. We parked them both out In front of the church on our wedding day.
Folks stood with their jaws dropped on the curb as we squalled out sideways in his gold Boss! It thrills my soul to this day, just to think about it! Like you said, The best fun in a car... Ever! We even swapped driver's while driving on interstate! Crazy..
Right?! There was a lot less traffic back then. I know you're feeling like a kid again banging thru the gears of that awesome 4 speed Hurst shifter! And
that unique rumbling, intimidating, growl you can identify only as a fast, fantastic Mustang roaring around the corner even before seeing that Pony prancing and snorting into sight! 👍 Sure do miss my Mustangs! Thanks for the memories! Giddy up... Go!!!!

I also owned a 1970 Boss 302 between 1975 to 1982. I did a lot of street racing with it. I found it to be a nice handling car. But not much low end performance with those huge Cleveland style heads even with a 4:57 gear. I drove it for a for two years with the 302 but eventually I replaced it with a Boss 351 engine. It was night & day the difference in so much better performance. In 1982 I rebuilt the 302 engine. When dismantling the engine I notice that all the lower piston skirts were broken. I made a phone call to TRW to see what replacement pistons they had for that engine. Talking to the chief TRW engineer, he said that they had manufactured the original pistons for Ford. So starting in 1974 for warranty purpose they had redesign the replacement pistons, but with a much shorter piston skirt. So my advice, if you're buying a 69/70 Boss 302 make sure the engine has got the new style replacement pistons.

Since you mentioned them in the brochure, I have two 1970 1/2 falcons. They were a last ditch marketing ploy to have a base model car at a lower price. It’s based on the Torino body but has a full frame door window, vent window, and B pillar, which the Torino/Fairlane did not have.
You could get a 6 cylinder all the way up to the 429 scj. One of mine is a factory 351c 4v shaker intake. They were only built for 6 months in 1970.

Nice Boss 302. I had a 70 Mustang Grande' in the early 80's. It was the same paint color. Ford gave it the promotional name " Freudian guilt" .
It was a very difficult color to spray when I repainted it. The coverage of that color was very slow to build! I used a light Grey sealer. If I had chosen a dark red oxide sealer the repaint would have been a huge disaster.

Lou, two things I would like to point out of the questions you ask in the video. I really didn't want to look through 200 posts to see if someone else made these same observations. The post on the Falcon, I am told from members of the Falcon Club of America, is what distinguishes it from a Fairlane. The Fairlane and 70 1/2 Falcon appear to be the same other than that post. There may be some slight dimensional differences, too. The 70 Falcon for the first half of the model year was the same as the 69, which had a post on all models. The other thing was the different grill on the page with the LTD. That looked to me to be a grill from a 69 Galaxie.

The Sports Roof is the absolute best of the '69-'70 Mustangs in my opinion. Chrome Magnum 500s, the best kind!!!
I never realized that the Torino was car of the year in '70, nor that the Sportsroof was available outside of the GT and Cobra packages. And PROPS to the Ford Louisville!!!
The Boss 429 is the king of the '69-'70 Mustangs, but the Boss 302 is probably the next most-special, (and no, I'm not forgetting the '69-'70 GT350 and GT500s, though not to discredit them) but even the cool as hell Mach1s don't compare to a Boss. '70 Mach1 was the first '69-'70 I really dug as a 6th grader. '69 and '70 really were the peak of it all! Too bad I was only 2, 3, and 4, during those years... Designers NAILED it with those Sports Slats. And just what the heck was going on with those guys and that girl with the Mustang Grande??

Lou, if I'm not mistaken like the BOSS 429 the 70' model BOSS 302s had slightly smaller valves than the 69s detracting from performance somewhat but improving their tractability and usability on the street quite a bit. The earlier models required a higher rpm just to pull out from a stop light without experiencing mushiness even though they'd scream to the rev limiters 6150 ceiling, that most people unhooked. If that's not the exact story I think it's pretty close. haha KUTGW

Don't take this the wrong way, but why do people keep their classic cars in the garage and "not bring it out all that often?" We have a 2013 Shelby GT500 and a 1970 Corvette 454 that we drive at least 3 to 5 days a week. You can't take it with you, so drive it! In both cars I get smiles and thumbs up and I love it! Far too many "treats' in the trunk, because I was chomping at the bit to check out that ginger interior which matches that gold exterior perfectly! Another fine classic Lou!

Caray, Lou! Jaja. ¡Excelente video Lou!

The grill in the ford brochure….the GRILL! not the girl. I believe I remember that perhaps from the Galaxie 500 and maybe the Custom/Custom 500 models? Or maybe tje Canadian versions? It does remind me of the look of a grill from a Meteor though. Do you know the Meteor from Mercury?

@@loucostabile yep! Canuck car. Can’t remember off hand the models from the ‘50’s. Bit on the 60’s and newer there was the Montcalm and the Rideau (ree-do) Rideau 500. Two models I can think of from that period. No idea as to why Ford used French names for the Meteor models, can’t see a connection there at all, Meteor Montcalm? Rideau? I always thought it was weird. Maybe space junk 😉 connection, (joking lol.) They were basically a plane Jane version of the Mercury with the same body style. That grill in the 1970 Ford brochure does remind me of the Meteor grill from I think that year. The Meteor models were dropped well before Mercury went down into the history books.

Just never really seen any of those big fords left on the road very rare. Later models like in the 80s you would see like 1974, 1975 and up a little bit towards the end of the 70s in the 80s but the earlier 70s stuff now maybe some nice 60s Fords
