I have NEVER related to anything more than feeling the end of a story coming and just fully dropping it rather than finish it 😭

The way I tested bulk is I put non-sticky memos in between each page, alternating the placement a little bit. You can use study cards as well. It'll give you a nice idea of how much bulk you'll get if you only stick a thing or two on each page. And after testing you can just take the paper out and use it as you normally would. No waste and no damage. I do really love the look of that HON!

It sounds like it makes the most sense for you to stick with the HON rather than the avec. Any book you stick stuff into is going to bulk up a bit, and the avec just means two smaller bulked books instead of one surely? Also, the struggle is real stepping from one avec into the next especially as its at the beginning of the bad weather. I suffered this year and got such bad planner block because of it.

This^^. Also, if the photos are offset from each other and don’t get too stacked up on neighboring pages, the book will end up less bulky. Rub-on stickers add NO thickness (are your Halloween stickers rub on? If not, could they become so?), and some are simply on extremely thin label stock.

Hi, I just found your channel searching around youtube for how people are using their Hobonichi Techos (I bought one at the recommendation of someone in a writing group). I am also Autistic, and I wanted to say that I very much appreciate you being so candid about your status and how it impacts your planning. Over the years, I have watched MANY planner/buller journal videos, and never have I seen my own struggles and desire to tweak and refine my notebooks reflected so closely! Good luck to us as we seek out the simple, reliable system. I am so burnt out right now, I long for a notebook system that is just easy to reach for and will keep the hazy fog of my brain from taking over!

I really love the idea of an archive book. It makes so much sense. I feel like I have things spread across several different systems and I love the idea of maintaining it all in one place but still having the freedom to move between other systems as needed. I continue to appreciate you sharing your thoughts, plans, ideas, and experimentation. It is so helpful to me!

Thank you for showing us the pouch with your journals in at the end - I really wanted to see how that worked. I’m still mulling over hobonichi A5 vs Stalogy for next year (I used the day-free this year and it didn’t have enough room). If you google sleep diary, there are lots of free sheets with ideas for keeping a record. Essentially, from my experience, you want a time block with 24 hours, with index for actual sleep, feeling sleepy, when you go to bed - that sort of thing

I got jumpscared when you talked about April because I had a full-on realization that April feels like it was yesterday, but it’s toward the beginning of the year and now we’re at the end of the year. Like, time really doesn’t make any sense this year. It went by super fast. Omg

honestly your struggles this year have been very relatable to me ... idk if it's an autism thing or just a random thing we have in common. i got into making my own coptic stitch bound notebooks and i do really like the junky diy books i made (and it's satisfying to be able to bind in my old paintings and a bunch of junk mail and scrap paper that otherwise would have been binned, instead of spending money i don't have on new notebooks), but right now i'm really feeling the pull towards something more minimal, less collage and paint and more straight writing, and even though i know my tastes switch between maximalist journals and minimalist journals roughly every 3-6 months, i still really want a book that will hold a year's worth of journalling right now... i don't know if i've managed a year in one book since i was a kid, since i just write and draw and whatever so much that i usually fill 2-6 books (and sometimes more) per year. anyway, your style seems more consistent than mine, but i do relate to the journey you've been on.

I've been battling between getting that exact same hon and the avec... I have a really bad habit of dropping planners when I get super busy so getting the Avec seems less intimidating for me personally cus I'd feel less bad if I miss a few weeks (possibly months) but that gingham cover looks absolutely gorgeous... I'm so excited for you! I hope you have an amazing time with your new journal and that you keep enjoying it

I also had a year of experimentation, and found myself craving an archive as well, and I chose a HON for that. I also gave myself topical notebooks - like for health or languages - that I can play around in, but in the end the HON is the one book I put on the shelf. Excited to see how your archive goes!

It's so lovely to see you back in the Cousin/getting along with it so wonderfully! I got the black gingham Weeks for next year and wow I love how tactile the cover is, I'm kinda wishing I got the A5 HON now - but I decided to go with the Avec because this year I've really stuffed my Cousin. If you do decide to go for the Avec, I've covered mine with brown Kraft sticker paper, it was so easy to do 😊 thank you for another lovely video, and I hope you feel much better soon!

Hey Megan ❤ why don’t you try the undated a5/a6?
I feel like you’ll be able to write out all of your transcriptions, diary entries AND dailies without worrying about space. It would be your big book of everything!
Also you use monthlies way more than weeklies so i think it’s perhaps a more flexible option with the feel of a planner still 😊

The cousin makes a return!! Its a fun book--- I keep coming back to it despite my own planner experimentation. Ive also been debating between a full book and avec, and the only reason im going for the avec is because 1) portability and 2) i need a creative notebook with it. I don't think the Hon you have would bulk up too badly--- Hobonichi tends to stay together really even with moderate chunk. Ive pasted full pages in some of my months and it looks about the same as your current level.

I always feel so guilty about leaving blank pages in my dated notebooks. It makes me feel like I've failed myself and my book if that makes any sense. So this made me feel better that I am not the only one who has large gaps in their notebooks :)

Oh, I love the Hon so much! I am starting my year on a Midori MD Journal because I am curious about the paper and the undated freedom is good for me. I hope I can keep my journaling in two books at max for 2024, because having 3 this year was not nice, I also need all in one place. I wanted to get a cousin this year so bad… but I don’t know if I could work with a dated notebook, I think it would feel restrictive and give anxiety to leave empty pages; so I decided to get something else and now I am sticking to the Midori. I am not sure if I love cream paper, but I am eager to try it, we’ll see.

What I do to cover the cover of my notebooks is I print out pics or find a nice bit of paper and glue it on with Mod Podge and then seal it with the outdoor one so it's strong. I've also thought about peel-and-stick wallpaper might be fun if you can get a sample or something

i've got my first cousin for 2024 for forward planning and journaling/memory keeping, and i got traveler's notebooks for commonplacing. your musings and letting us see inside your process have helped me immeasurably. it's a big leap to spend so much so i spent a year in my old system (moleskine A5 weekly notebooks) trying out all the things about the cousin that intimidated me and making sure of what i wanted. you've been a great inspiration to me.

what a lovely video, i'm glad you figured out the system that works out best for you!! ngl you've got me tempted to get the gingham hon,.... but currently my system for next year is to use a hobonichi weeks for work/to-do lists, a moleskin squared notebook for commonplacing and an a6 techo hobonichi for memory keeping! the a5 looks so gorgeous but also intimidating, but who knows, maybe a 'big autistic book of everything' is the solution here, and i'll switch the year after.. thank you for sharing your system/journaling!

You look so happy with the Gingham HON, it seems worth the risk to me. Since it is not a "full" hardcover I don't feel bulk would be as big a concern for this specific HON version as it might be for the other ones. The Avec feels bothersome to me because I would have to carry both books for a while when the time comes where it's still June but I want to plan July stuff, but carrying both books defeats the purpose.
I also had a Big Experimentation Year with planners/journals in 2023 and I relate very much to all you said about it! 🖤I didn't realize it until I watched the video but I do really really want to have one Big Autistic Life Book again too. Panic Notebooks are a brilliant idea. Again, I didn't realize, but I sort of had one of those too for a bit. I might keep that going if I need it.
I will be switching to a Spring start Japanese Cousin for October. I decided on the Spring start so I can get six months out of the book still. Also December/January is very much A Time for me and I hate to change my book shortly after my birthday every time, it's upsetting. (I was ecstatic when I realised the Spring start line existed.) I also like the idea of getting to have a fresh new book in Spring, which is my favourite season and gives me lots of autistic joy every year when the new plants come in. 🌱
I'm very nervous about the shift because I'm leaving my comfort size of A6-ish books behind for the first time in a very long while, but I'm also excited to have more page space and to tackle the challenge of both planning and journaling in the same book. I feel doing that will make my life record more complete, as my daily tasks and chores do affect my journaling and I sometimes feel not having them in my journal doesn't give the full picture.
Unrelated, but those The Awakening screenshots gave me such a happiness spike seeing them. I watched a playtrough of it on RUclips and it is one of my favourite ever Holmes reimaginings, it is so good. I really want to play the prequel game myself this year. Do you have a favourite non-Doyle Holmes?
(Small technical note: The link to Lindsey's channel in the video description does not work.)

I've gone back and forth between the Cousin and the Avec for the same reasons. I love the idea of one entire book for the year, but I moved to the Avec in July this year and have loved it. The Cousin ended up being kind of hard to write in since the spine was curving a bit. It was annoying me, so I decided to switch. I got the Avecs for 2024 so we'll see... good luck with your decision! 🤗

It’s been so interesting seeing your experimentation throughout the year. I started getting into designing my layouts, as well, and experimenting with having them printed in booklets by a professional printer. It’s very exciting…but I also ordered a Hobonichi Weeks for next year. The Weeks just seems to work for me and I enjoy the size of it so much. I’ve been making planning and tracking pages for the back of next year’s Weeks, but I also worry about bulking it up too much. But planning how I’m going to plan is so exciting for me and your channel gives me so much inspiration. I hope the Hon works out for you. I love that cover so much! And sorry to hear your sleep appointment was pushed back. I remember having to wait several months and it felt like torture! I wanted to scream sometimes because the lack of ability to function was unbearable. I can’t imagine having to wait as long as you are having to. I hope you get to have many good days while you wait, and wish you lots of comfort during this spooky season to get you by.

I love the Avec (I use the A6) because the change over happens when I start getting the itch for a new planner.
I like to decorate and I use the weekly supplement so it does get bulky, but it's not terribly heavy.
I'm thinking I'm going to try the A5 Avec for '24. I had been going back and forth on whether I want to get an A6 again, but there's a cover I really, really want that's A5, so that decided for me, lol.

It's really easy to cover the Hobonichi books! I use craft paper and dot runner adhesive to glue the paper aligned with the binding tape, then I use a rotary cutter to trim the edges. The result looks perfect and with a rotary cutter it's pretty fool-proof. If you use any kind of wet glue the covers will bend and if you don't fully cover the paper with adhesive the paper will "bubble" where it's not attached to the cover.

I'm actually using the Hobonichi Day Free planner next year. I find myself not keeping up with weeks or days when I'm tired, but the month and year are constant. But I want somewhere to put journaling and common place notes. AND I want it all in one. I'm with ya there. I've tried multiple, and I don't like it being apart or split. I don't feel connected or whole if my planner/journal/notes are everywhere. Congratulations on your continued planner journey! Thank you for sharing ❤

With the weekly columns - I turn my cousin sideways - you could divide the long thin column in half then when you rotate the page you’ve got 2 wide segments for to dos? I always use it as a wide space sideways - sometimes writing about dreams/ nightmares or other times daily gratitude :) but I found it much easier to rotate the spread and have a wider space personally :) love your videos so much!!

Love this!!! And I love the idea of having a big archive. I decided to order the AVEC because I know it will bulk up with all the pictures, stickers, washi and scraps of paper I plan to put in it. And I like the idea that I get a new book in the middle of the year. It’s only my second year in Hobonichi, so I’m sure I’ll be experimenting and changing things up quite a bit, so my second AVEC will prob look totally different than the first lol. Excited to see what you decide!! 💗

  • @lissam2529

The black HON is so aesthetically pleasing. If it was me I’d want the simplicity of one book if it’s main goal is an archive. The archival tome could sit on your desk if it gets bulky at the end of the year, while you carry the smaller books. The Avecs wouldn’t be too difficult to cover with a nice paper either though.
I also tried so many planners this year. Spent more money than I’d like and have my stuff scattered as well, got very overwhelming. BUT now I know what works for me: Hobo Weeks is the winner. Which is the planner I started in this year!😂 So I ordered a Hobo Weeks Mega to keep my life from unraveling. I know can maintain that at my absolute worst, and that seems to be the deciding factor for me. And also got the Hobo Weeks with the black gingham cover (beautiful) for my health journal. Very very content with my planner plans for 2024.

as for next year's books i've made my first order from hobonichi -- i've got a weeks and an A6 daily hon for next year ! hopefully i'm going to be getting back into the swing of uni after a rocky 3-year period of flipping between being part time and off uni. im expecting to get a lot of mileage out of the weeks for planning and have the A6 as an on the go comfort book where i can paste in whatever i'm up to and is making me happy each day. i'm also keeping up with plain A5 gridded midori notebooks that are for longer journal entries/memory keeping and gushing about whatever has my interest in that moment, and collecting artworks i love.
the gingham cousin looks so much better in this video than what i saw in photos !!!! it looks gorgeous and i love the texture you described. on the avec books -- i love the look of covered up books with paper but i did find that when i did that in highschool the edges got a bit fuzzy from use, just in case that would bother you ! i guess that wouldn't happen if you had a plastic cover though so maybe this is just for anyone else who was considering it but doesn't use a plastic protective cover !!

I have quite a big lineup for 2024, but I'm super excited about it! I'm using a Hobonichi cousin as my main. I call it my central station. In it I will mostly journal and commonplace. I will also use it to keep track of my four sub journals/planners:
    - Hobonichi weeks Cats as my reading and writing journal.
    - Hobonichi Weeks Mega as my EDC for hobby/project tracking and all my random thoughts and ideas.
    - Hon A6 Botanical for my health and my cats health. I am autistic and ADHD as well and have quite a few appointments to keep track of for my physical health. And my cat is diabetic so he requires a very strict treatment and diet + tons of appointments.
    - Hobonichi 5-year for short and simple memory keeping. Just a sentence or two a day.

I've been using a day-free for most of 2023, but I decided I can just draw my monthly layouts myself and then the rest of the book is not that useful to me. So right now I am experimenting with an A5 Stalogy as a bullet journal. I like the undated aspect because I don't really plan or journal every day. That said, I am really drawn to the Black Gingham cover, so I might just order an A6 in black gingham to play with. We'll see!

I really wish Hobonichi made a B6 size of the Weeks Mega (or B6 horizontal version of the cousin)- I think that would be my holy grail to keep everything in one place. I originally got the A5 Avec fearing the thick planner, but found I disliked the idea of splitting my academic year up mid semester, so I got the A5 Cousin. I use the most stickers/washi in my monthly spread with some in my weekly spread, and none in my daily spread. My Cousin is about 0.75"... and I am certain it will stay under 1" thick at the end of the year. I wrote class notes in fountain pen only on the daily pages. On a side note, my A6 is an Avec since it was experimental and I ended up doing fountain pen only. The gingham looks lovely. I feel you for wanting one main planner. I will keep watching to see how work though it.

I'd go for the HON. I've been using a Cousin for the last 10 years for work so I don't use stickers or paste anything in them, and they don't bulk up at all by the end of the year. One year I experimented using sporadic stickers and washi, and it didn't make a noticeable difference. So I don't think you'll have any issues with it bulking up too much.

I think the Cousin is good because it can hold basically everything; i feel a bit limited by the weeks, which makes it really easy to stay on top of, but it doesn't really draw out a lot of insights. In just a few weeks in the cousin I'm seeing more trends appear because i can capture more

It sounds like way more than it is now that i’ve written it down though 😭😭

Hi Megan, first time watched and commenter here but I’m really loving your style and really appreciate your content too! Found you thru your Filofax video, and I was interested to see where you went with it- I just got myself a a5 binder and was looking at ideas. I was laughing when you were like, err after the filofax, it all went out of control. Not sure whether it bodes well for me, but I think it’s kind of heartening to hear you talk abt experimenting and trying to figure it out.
Anyway one question/comment I had was that it seems like you mainly use your planners for like, common place booking + memory keeping - am I right abt that? Sorry I’ve not had much time to watch your older videos (but will do so in the coming days!) so apologies if you spoke abt it previously!
I think it’s been a good video to hear u talk abt archive books though. I don’t often think abt having a physical memento of the year (I feel like the past decade has really seen a push toward minimalism + decluttering, which I’m trying to work thru). I used a techo a few years back and definitely kind of used it well - in my own scrappy way! But it’s food for thought to see you use your cousin in this way too. I’ll stay tuned. Thanks for being you :)

According to my pollen map thingy, it's nettle and mugwort season now, and I think because it's been so mild and windy lately, there's probably a fair bit in the air. My voice is still a bit sore and scratchy but general hay fever symptoms seem to be marginally better. I'm not completely joined at the hip with the barbiecore inhaler.

oh wow! my airways have been struggling this is so interesting, i've kept wondering what it may be because I thought if it would have been in the air that's more of a spring thing haha 🌬️

      @RobinPalmerTV 11 месяцев назад +1

@@curseofcontext hiya! the main hay fever season for tree and grass pollen is usually the beginning of march to the end of august, so usually you need to start nasal sprays, antihistamines and inhalers (if you have asthma) a few weeks before the season starts. I think because it's generally mild and humid in the UK now, it means we have a much longer "traditional" hay fever season. Hope you're not feeling too bad!

just finished the video; ugh. your videos are so calming and quiet my brain for just a bit, which is nice (thank you).
i'm in the weeks for 2024, but i have two of them (or will have two of them); one is a health/mood tracker, and one is a generalized planner. i also have a commonplace book, an art portfolio book, a braindump book, and the list goes on. i can't have things combined, they MUST remain separate otherwise i go stir crazy. that's autism for you, i suppose. i don't know. it works weirdly and doesn't make a lot of sense in this case.

I would stick with the HON for this year, especially because I like just having one book for archive. So satisfying to have a chunky book to go through at the end of the year! You can make it work. If it doesnt work out, can do Avec next year and just see this year as a learning one.

hi megan!!! we have the same dilemma huhu i rly like the idea of a big book of everything and it’s exciting to see that you got the HON. but yeah i’m also weighing if it’s a good idea to get a cousin vs avec 😮‍💨 i get so iffy when notebooks get bulky but i do agree, the avec has very meh colors huhuhu despite this i do want to use the kokuyo cover you had cos i also found it. but yeah i’m also still contemplating. this was a lovely video! i have been anticipating it and it did disappoint, thank you for always working so hard!!

Hi Megan, I just wanted to say thank you for your channel! This is my first year using Hobonichi and Field notes! Previously I bought all types of diaries and in the end designed and printed my own. Seeing your channel and being introduced to Hobonichi has been life changing for me🫶
I have a weeks that lives with me everywhere, another weeks that has all my kids homeschooling in it and I originally tried a cousin but use it now for common planning and I just ignore dates. Next year I have weeks and Hon, my 2 young children also wanted a weeks each so I got one each and each day they will tell me what they want recorded. Extra work but they should have a memory book to look back on in years to come. Thank you again🫶🫶

I'll keep using one note for digital planning, I've been using it for years

  • @curseofcontext
    @curseofcontext 11 месяцев назад

will look into the article you mention, i've been solving around a similar issue with establishing an archival space for overview!
with digital commonplacing in the bear app i'm solving my biggest trouble with on-paper notetaking with being able to restructure paragraphs to make more sense of my thoughts by adjusting the flow of a note..
my system involves visual-grouping instead of tagging (because in the app that works at a quick glance). i'm theme-ing them with an emoji in the header (technically similar to colorcoding stickers in the margin), with the search-function i can then overview and cross-reference the whole themegroup.
with commonplacing sources of interest and referential notes this is working well but it does not meet my need of a memory-keeping overview because i struggle to maintain order or timed-recollection with memories. especially when it comes to numbered recollection like specific year or age numbers, my brain doesn't do that for me.
so archiving memory in a way that aides a linear or cyclical retelling of time is where i'm also still problem-solving!

I do love the black gingham on that cover! I still can’t decide what I’m going to use for next year! I’ve got a TN with your notebooks and I absolutely love that so much! I also caved and bought a hobonichi weeks in the relaxing plaid cover, though, I kind of wish I’d gone for the black gingham. I also ended up buying the floral a6 Tomitaro Makino. I then have filofax’s….a personal and a mini…..so god knows what I’m going to end up using 🤣. My problem is that I just end up loving everything so then I end up wanting to use everything haha!

I think my main concern with having a separate archive is the redundancy of information. From personal experience, it feels a smidge trippy being in that "gap" period where my books/systems aren't all up to date. I'm not sure if it would be a concern you'll have, though. Different people work best with different systems, and I know that what is a challenge for me might apply differently to you.
On the other hand, I'm really glad to see you revisiting A5 layouts! I've been watching your vlog for the Hobonichi cousin the other day and thought that the layouts were very effective (in consolidating information all in one spread) and "full" looking-though I'm probably majorly biased. 😔
My preference for journalling is similarly A5s; I'd gotten a ring binder from a local crafts shop (a bone-colored faux leather one) which I leave on the desk, and I'm aiming to purchase a real leather version for everyday carry. I'm going to try out "location" based systems next year. The ring binder staying on my desk had worked great for me, and it acts like a checkpoint somewhat. There's something very comforting with the idea that "everything in this [size] is purposefully archived information" in my head, though I do not really know why.
As always, thank you for the vlog! It was very fun hearing about your input on systems, and I always keep them in mind as I contemplate mine myself. ❤️

I'm still planning on getting a navy Hon in A5, but I'm struggling to swallow that $73 price tag! I looked at that black gingham and it is a bit of a softer cover. I don't use a cover on my A6 currently because I only write at home I don't take it anywhere with me. That said the book is showing signs of wear. I've also pretty much abandoned decoration. I got to the point where I would do the decorating in sessions. I guess it is hard for me to find stickers and whatnot that have real meaning to me. It felt like I was decorating for the sake of using up these stickers and stuff I paid for. I hope you figure out what works best for you. I don't care what system you use as long as you keep making content! I love your nails btw.

I feel like I need one big autistic book too, but then it gets super big and heavy to carry around and I get about half way through and I get overwhelmed. But the idea of everything in one place is so appealing and it, like yours, makes my autistic brain very happy…until it gets stressed 😂
The more I watch, the more I feel like we are in the same boat 😂. I’m a TRC girl and a stalogy girl and it’s so hard that stalogy doesn’t come in TRC size!!! (Unless you get it cut but the shipping is more than notebook -.-)

Question - I have never used an Hobonichi and want to try for 2024. I have been bullet journaling and using the Moleskine and Leuchtturm1917 A5 books. Is the Hobonichi Cousin the same size comparison? I am thinking the A6 Hobonichi might be too small for me. Thank you so much in advance!!
