How to Grow A Mango Tree From Seed!
I've been asked by several viewers to start a Mango Tree from Seed Series and since I love growing from seed, I figured I may as well give it a go!
I have experimented with several different techniques over the last few months to get an idea of which methods work the best. In this video, I will provide you with an update on the 2 seeds that I started on 8/7/18, as well as the one started on 7/21/18.
    A few learnings:
1 - Once the root is a few inches long - plant them into a good potting mix
2 - Keep the pot covered with some kind of clear wrap/bag to act as a mini greenhouse
3 - Open the bag daily for a few minutes to allow air flow
4 - Once the seed sprouts a plant, cut holes on the top of the bag to allow the humidity to drop down from 100% to help acclimate the plant to normal conditions.
5 - Once the young sapling outgrows the environment, remove the bag
I plan on keeping you updated on all of the seedlings progress from now until they either perish or flourish into fruit-producing trees.
If you want to stay up to date on the entire series, here's the link:

With regards to the Zip lock bag. I started using mine upside down. I cut the bottom all the way along & use the zip lock to open/close to water or allow humidity out.

It will take 10-12 years to produce fruit if grown in ground. If you really want fruits early even after a year you need to graft it. And for that you'll need a stem of the mango tree which is already producing fruits.

I think maybe the leaf damage on your mango was from when you pulled the bag off! I've had mine in a bag until they came up, THEN took the bag off. I had NO "SHOCK" with mine. I just now mist them regularly and during the winter, I keep the temperature a little higher because they like LOTS of warmth and humidity. :-)

Hey Rob, I’m really enjoying your channel! Great info and you have a great smile and personality to go with it.
I used your suggestion of using a ziplock bag to make a sort of greenhouse over my 2 mango seeds. They sprouted about a week ago. Two days ago I cut the corners off the bag and cut a hole in the top to reduce the humidity. The plants are 2-3” tall with very immature leaves at this point. How long would you recommend I leave the bag on for? Thank you!

    • @RobBackyardGardenerr
      @RobBackyardGardenerr  5 лет назад

Jill Edwards Thank you Jill! I’d keep opening bigger holes until the plant almost touches the top of the bag and then you should be able to remove.

  • @tomdodds22

Hey your videos really inspired me and started geowing my own. I've got a bunch of tomatoes going and have started trying to germinate strawberries. The mango seed was going great. I took your advice on putting the well treated seed in clingfilm and left it to germinate in the airing cupboard for about 10 days, it sprouted a decent long root with a white tip and other additional roots off it and began to grow a sprout. So today I removed it and went to place it in soiled pot with a bag over it in the concevatory. Despite this I think maybe the worse thing may have happened, the white tip was abit more brittle than I thought and broke off on removal. Just the white tip. Will it still grow or is that game over. Would love to hear from you as you seem a very experienced gardener. I'm in the UK but we've been having really good heat recently I know it's a tropical plant but I hope the concevatory and bag will give it a really good green house affect. Any ideas would be much appreciated, cheers Tom! 👍👍

I would recommend to plant them vertically because where they sprout is at the top of the seed and so planting it vertical helps it grow straight and strong because it doesn't need to push the soil much and the seed itself.
Also, I would just leave them outside because that is what I did and they turned out super healthy and strong, but I can't force you, but I can sure give a suggestion.hope you like it!!
