    Words:
    There were three ravens sat on a tree,
    Down a down, hey down a down,
    They were as black as black could be
    With a down;
    Then one of them said to his mate,
    Where shall we our breakfast take?
    With a hey derry down.
    Down in yonder green field,
    There lies a knight slain under his shield;
    His hounds they lie down at his feet
    So well do they their master keep.
    His hawks they fly so eagerly,
    There's no fowl that dare him come nigh;
    Down there comes a fallow doe,
    As great with young as she might go.
    She lifted up his bloody head,
    And kissed his wounds that were so red;
    She got him up upon her back
    And carried him to earthen lake.
    She buried him before the prime,
    She was dead herself ere evensong time;
    God send every gentleman,
    Such hawks, such hounds, and such a leman.

    It is maybe synchronicity that the first time in my life, I saw a lute being played live today, in the streets of Scarborough, and then I find this on my feed. Beautiful. Just really delightful.

    This was a lovely performance. I haven't heard this song for a long time, my parents used to have it on an LP, sung by Alfred Deller. (His version tended more to a North Country dialect.)
    For those who are wondering, a "leman" or "lemman" is a loved one of the opposite sex.
    That still leaves me with a lot of questions. Some of the imagery is almost Norse, mixed with that of knightly chivalry. What is an "earthen lake" and why is there one there? Why did the lover die? And, sorry, but what happened to the hounds? (I would assume the hawks could look after themselves.)

      Apparently the 'doe' who lovingly cleaned him before carrying him away, is a term for a young pregnant girl.

    Meanwhile in the Scottish ballad tradition, we could only manage to rustle up twa corbies. I suppose this is just a bit of one-upmanship from That There London.

    At the end of the Schama _A History of Britain_ they have a stunning music video of this song as a sort of summation of the series. It tears your heart out. ruclips.net/video/3mW2mqiliEw/видео.html
