  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that primarily affects older adults and can cause vision loss in the center of the visual field. While the exact cause of AMD is not fully understood, several risk factors have been identified:
    1. Age: AMD is most common in individuals over the age of 60, and the risk increases with age.
    2. Genetics: Family history of AMD increases the risk. Certain genetic variations have been associated with an increased likelihood of developing AMD.
    3. Smoking: Smoking tobacco significantly increases the risk of developing AMD and can also exacerbate the condition in individuals already affected.
    4. Obesity: Being overweight or obese increases the risk of AMD.
    5. Cardiovascular health: Conditions such as hypertension and high cholesterol may contribute to the development or progression of AMD.
It's essential to note that having one or more risk factors doesn't necessarily mean a person will develop AMD, and individuals can take steps to mitigate their risk through lifestyle changes and regular eye exams.
If you're concerned about your risk of AMD, call or text 661.325.EYES to schedule a dilated eye exam with us here at Empire Eye and Laser Center.
