Riding The Falkirk Wheel | ROTATING Boat Lift In Scotland!

  • In this adventure I continue my tour around Scotland with a visit to the Falkirk Wheel! This impressive rotating boat lift opened in 2002 and connects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. Along with sharing various different facts about the wheel, I also share footage of it in operation as it rotates. I also enjoy a 60 minute tour of the canal including a ride on the Falkirk Wheel itself!

Hey bud, great video. Shame you were at the wheel on my day off.I love chatting to vloggers. I normally escort narrowboats up the wheel and up the 2 massive electric sluices lock gates you go in to get onto the union canal. The time you were at TFW there had been a breach on a part of the union canal. First time its breached that part in 200 years. It meant no boats could travel from Edinburgh to TFW via the union canal. Most holiday hire boats want to go up TFW an onto Edinburgh which take you right into the heart of the city. Some take in the festival or the tattoo etc. Covid knocked that part on the head but it was still super busy as families wanted to get away from it all, keep safe and holiday at home so hiring a narrowboat was the perfect idea. The breach was a real bummer it really was, few did keep their holidays and took the boats down the 13 lock gates to the kelpies or went west towards Glasgow. Hopefully the breach will be fixed for next season and with the vaccine and plenty of programmes on tv like Celebs go barging it really helps. Thanks again.

It's surprisingly energy efficient as well. The Falkirk Wheel uses only 1,5 kWh per half a turn. That's not much, considering the enormous weight it's rotating.
My girlfriend and I (we're Dutchies) rented a yacht three years ago and travelled from Fort William to Edinburgh and back, crossing some stunning lochs. Ofcourse, we *had* to visit the Falkirk Wheel as well. Especially going down the wheel is a surreal experience.

Personally I love the design both technically but also visually and the simplicity behind such an incredible piece of practical engineering is awesome.
If you are visiting Scotland I’d highly recommend a visit. The wheel is a 10-15 minute walk to the station

Is it just a tourist thing.... or do commercial and private boats use it as well.... and if so, is there a fee for that kind of use. It was absolutely fascinating. Thanks for sharing this with us!

    • @albee_fuqtifanno8595

Mostly used for holiday hires which are based at the wheel. Private boats pay a fixed mooring fee and can use the wheel as many times as they want during the season. Some days we have 19 boat movements. Some coming from the east in Edinburgh and some from Glasgow. There is 2 trip boats which do the usual thing shaun was on but its been really busy with holiday hires now after such programmes Celebs go barging etc. I escorted 2 boats up the wheel last season. Anne Diamond and Jenny bond on 1. The other Pete waterman and Bill Oddy. There was cameras everywhere but when it was shown on tv only a small part covered the wheel. All you could see was my white safety helmet lol.

Only just discovered this channel after linking from your Inverness Fair video. I actually stay only just over 1 mile from the wheel, and you can see my village at several points in the video! I do a lot of running and cycling, the path you're standing on at the end is where I do my running hill-rep training, and I cycle the various paths around the canal network on an almost daily basis. Would have been really funny if I'd bumped into you, think I'd have had a fan-boy moment :-) Glad you enjoyed your trip up to our wee part of the world, the Wheel really is an amazing feat of engineering (particularly the fact it only takes 8 kettles worth of power to rotate, thanks to Archimedes principle), looking forward to seeing the NC500 series of videos

And just to give a bit of closure to the pronunciation argument below (I was born in Falkirk Infirmary, and have stayed here the entire 44 years of my life), the first syllable is definitely pronounced 'fall', as in to 'fall' off a cliff. But as also mentioned, if you really wanted to sound local, you'd pronounce it 'faw', like 'fall' but without the 'll'. But jeez, you can't really be blamed for that, you're just pronouncing it as you read it, and nobody can be expected to accurately pronounce every single place name they visit, so I wouldn't worry about it :-)
