I actually met a former Miss Mississippi this year when I went to my cousin's wedding in Mississippi (I'm from NY). They're neighbors with her and she was invited. All I could think about was Suzanne Sugarbaker and how this woman was still gorgeous 40 years after she won Miss Mississippi.
Yes, in 1974 she was Miss FL. In Delta's book there's a photo of her posing with other contestants. She had her signature jet black hair even back then, but the palest skin, almost lily white, for a Floridian. Delta said she found tanning a bore, that other activities made better use of her time. One of those types who need to be busy all the time.
@@msr1116 tanning is not only boring but significantly increases your risk of getting skin cancer - and loads of wrinkles! Delta Burke and Joan Collins, who always advises people to stay out of the sun if they want to take care of their skin, are no fools.
I love Susanne Sugarbaker. She couldn't care less if she was or wasn't politically correct. She spoke her mind with conviction, no matter how silly her presumptions happened to be.
When I watched this show during its initial run, I always knew to brace myself whenever Suzanne would say, "Ya know?... Ah been thinkin'!..,." Delta Burke ROCKED in this role.
@@chrisuncleahmad666 Thank you! I was just saying that in another comment. I have a bit of a butt and thick thighs and I don’t consider myself fat. She was gorgeous at any weight/size. Her face is amazing
The characters of Susan & Anthony had a fantastic sarcasm that was also laced with deep sweetness, gentleness & true friendship. It was the unique heart of the show. When Delta was off the show - that element was replaced with zaniness & it was NEVER the same. It is so sad...because THIS was the absolute best show ever ( with the best cast ) put on tv that empowered women & spoke to so many social issues like never before.
Mississippi ROCKS with ALL its beautiful ladies. In fact, Mississippi, had bk 2 bk Miss America's in 1959 & 1960...BOTH attended The University of Mississippi...aka Ole Miss & BOTH were members of Chi Omega Sorority, too. That'll NEVER happen again!
Indeed, after season 5, it was the beginning of the end. Allison was obviously brought on as a "Suzanne" character. But unlike Suzanne, who simply did not think before she spoke sometimes & could be persuaded to see the error of her remarks, Allison just came off mean.
The magic of the show was that it started out with the love/antagonism of Julia and Suzanne as one duo, and Charlene and Mary Jo as best friends as a second duo. But as the show progressed, they could feature those two pairings, but also develop Suzanne and Charlene as the two wackier women playing off each other, and Julia and Mary Jo as the two responsible women tut-tutting at the other two, and then Suzanne and Anthony became such a fun additional duo. Allison Sugarbaker as a character was a poor replacement for Suzanne, because she wasnt written to have any connections to anyone--no reason for Julia to ever defend her, no connection to Carlene, or Mary Jo. So Julia Duffy was stuck with bad material to play.
Delta deserves multiple awards 🏆 for Designing Women and other roles! Suzanne and her Cadillacs won my heart 💜 💖 . Here's a big old crown 👑 for you Delta! 🏆. 🏆 ✌
I watch this on my phone at least 5-8 times a day !!! Suzanne was so off but so right !! This show was entertainment !! The cast was perfect !! And I love Suzanne !! Not perfect but smart and good intentions !! And all the while being respected and loved !!!
actually, notthefather, it really isn't her real accent. Delta Burke is from Orlando Florida originally.. she has a very minimal Southern accent in real life.
As bad as I hate the humid Mississippi summers. I swear that moist air is good for our skin. As long as you aren't a smoker, a sun worshipper & fried food isn't on your plate every night. Chances are you do age pretty well.
when I first watched this, I figured the joke was that Suzanne was the only one in the group who would have an encyclopedic knowledge of pageant winners, at least in her surrounding states
As someone from the *Northeast,* I have to say that for me *Midwestern men* are the most attractive in the country. They have that *All-American* look. Give me a *Midwestern farm boy or country boy* any day! 😍🥰
Dixie Carter looks like an older Jennifer Beales to me. I grew up loving Designing Women, then fell in love with The L Word. Both amazing actresses. Very different, but they favor at 0:53 .
You're right, Dixie Carter does look like Jennifer Beales. I always thought Dixie Carter looked black mixed race, having an aunt myself who looks just like Jennifer Beales has a black American father. I suspect Dixie Carter had someone in her bloodline who was black and passed for white marrying into their family or maybe several black ancestors. Most of the blood in the South is mixed with black Africans. Even Meghan McCain found out she was 2% West African.
The NY Times (or maybe more appropriately, the Atlanta Constituton) should get Delta Burke to write a daily editorial in the guise of Suzanne. She could just expound on one of these types of issues each day. It'd be a hoot.
Except that everything that came out of her mouth was from the pen of Linda Bloodworth Thomason.. Delta simply did an excellent job of interpreting the part.
It's an American thing. The Miss America pageant is what it's based around. Miss Nebraska, North Dakota, (northern USA states) aren't consistent knockouts as Miss Texas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, etc ... (southern USA states). There is truth to what Suzanne is saying, LMBO 😂🤣
actually, no. This is the beginning of the 3rd season. She had already gained some weight (her weight gain is first referenced in the 2nd season, in the episode where she flies to Atlantic City in hopes of raising some money by gambling), but as this season wore on she continued to gain weight. She was actually at her largest in Season 4. Ironically, most people consider that Delta's best year on the show, as she had evolved from shallow beauty queen into a more bawdy, broadly written character.
No matter this show was magnificent when Susan was in it, not taking anything from the other ladies including Anthony the way Susan n Anthony mesh it’s just beautiful 😻 the way they can work together is a force n put Julia in the mix. U better watch out she is as sassy 💁♀️ as a firecracker 🧨 this was one of my favorite program to keep wrinkles away it’s just hilariously funny 😆
Yeah, Thought so. Didn't she also audition for the Wonder Woman TV show not long after competing for Miss America? Heard she did but it's isn't well documented.
It still irks me that Delta Burke caught so much flack for gaining weight. Thirty years later, and our society has become a little more accepting of body size, but we are still far away from total acceptance. Delta was not only ridiculed about her weight gain in the press, but they also wrote it into the show. Seriously, Delta Burke is amazing, and that's what they should have focused on instead of her weight!
She is right, but I think there are more women competing for beauty pageants in the south than the northeast. I'm from NY and I know that we don't care about those kind of things. Obviously some people do, or else there would be no Miss. New York...but the mass majority don't care.
Nowadays, pageants are struggling to survive and stay relevant, which tells you what you need to know. Funny how Vanessa Williams was Miss New York and won Miss America and had no real pageant background. It was just something she found herself entering. I think that’s how most people are in states where pageants aren’t such a pervasive part of the social fabric. One of my favorite Broadway stars Kristin Chenoweth is from Oklahoma and was huge into pageants growing up (was first runner-up for Miss Oklahoma), and every time she talks about it with New York City interviewers, it’s like she’s talking about some exotic culture for an anthropological seminar, haha. In her first autobiography, she talks about pageants and it was eye-opening and says the whole scholarship thing is a ruse because most southern pageant girls spend way more money throughout their pageant careers that it wouldn’t make sense to do it only for scholarship money.
Delta Burke deserved an Emmy for the way she said "Miss Mississippi."

I don't know what the problem was. Sure Delta gained weight. But just look at her, she is still dazzlingly stunning.
compared to what we see nowadays on shows like my 500 pound life.... Delta's weight gains seems tame by today's standards.

J. C. - Episcopal Love didn't say that they just go on to the pageant. Episcopal Love was talking about WINNING the whole National pageant.
tejaswoman Again, that wasn't Suzanne's point. She saying that they win by playing musical instruments, not based on looks.
