  • Julia Sugarbaker isn't at all impressed with the lustful, rude, sculptress, Gabby Langford -- and tells her about herself in a way that only Julia Sugarbaker can: "Frankly, I find you to be RUDE, LAZY, HORNY, AND DUMB."
This clip disappeared... but I found a way to capture it.

I was at a dinner once with six other people. One disappeared for about 15 minutes and we had to wait for her to return to order. Then she disappeared again. This time for nearly 30 minutes. We had to send someone to find her when her dinner arrived. Where was she? Outside the restaurant on a bench...READING. I immediately thought of this episode!

I always thought that this episode was very cleverly written with a great twist at the end. We're set up to think that the villain is Gabby, the mistress (who, to be fair, is self-centered, pompous and also racist), but we find out that she did not know that Ansel was married, and the real villain turns out to be the wife. Very well done

If you notice Suzanne gets even more upset than Julia when Gaby starts flirting with Anthony. At least according to IMDB, if Delta Burke hadn’t left the show, the series finale was suppose to have her and Anthony getting married.

I have always enjoyed this show growing up, however, the fact that Anthony's character does not speak for himself in scenes such as this one was always offensive to me. A Black man saying nothing after being referred to as a "Black buck" by a white woman is just unrealistic and ridiculous! This scene promotes the stereotype of the docile Black man.

    • @melodiefrances3898

Especially a black male in the south. Where you are expected to stay in your place. Or else.
Just the word "buck" is deeply offensive and racist and totally objectifying in a reductionist way.
I think (hope) it would be done differently now ... ?

I've watched this show and all of its episodes many times and, considering Anthony's development and progression throughout the series, I think this particular episode was more about the Ladies defending his honor. I recall many episodes where Anthony spoke up for himself, either directly or indirectly, through sarcasm. Also, trying to talk sense to Gabby would be like arguing with a drunk. Anyway, it is a comedy, let's try to lighten up and not be too serious; plus, Mary Jo's Vietnam comparison was comedy gold. ... PEACE

Anthony had manners, and also he was not a partner yet. He was trying to be polite & keep things on a professional level. They are on a job after all. People can’t stand a gentleman? Anthony was also intelligent enough to know one should not waste time arguing with a moron like Gabby. There are other ways to behave besides attacking someone.
