  • The Cinderella City Mall was once the largest indoor shopping center between Chicago and Los Angeles. And for the Denver Colorado Metropolitan area it was colossal! Over 200 stores, 3 levels and 5 wings with their own names and character.
Shamrock Mall, Gold Mall, Blue Mall, Rose Mall and the infamous Cinder Alley, which happily catered to the alternative crowd.
Located in the south suburb of Englewood, it was located on the northwest corner of Broadway and Hampden, a busy intersection.
Opening in 1968, there was nothing like it in the Rocky Mountain West. With a 35 foot fountain, it seemed like a classy establishment in it's day.
...but times change and within 20 years a lot of superior malls were springing up all over Denver, rendering Cinderella City quaint and even old and dangerous. There was always the fear that the flimsy 2 story parking garage could collapse causing some serious mayhem.
I worked there many times drawing my caricatures, including 2 Christmases in a row; 1991 and '92.
This footage was shot on Dec. 23rd '91 when the mall was peaking in one of it's last strong holiday seasons. I was set up at the east entrance by Arby's and Dairy Queen.
See how many landmarks, and areas you recognize in the mall. I didn't have time to shoot much (customers were waiting to be drawn on one of the last busy days) but I did get much of the Center court area and the Blue Mall.
I seem to be one of the few, if not ONLY one with footage of the Famous Cinderella City. If anyone else has some old film or video of this Colorado icon, please upload.
    Thanks,
    Sam Klemke
