  • After the succes of the Calling All Dawns' Lyrics/Live Video, here are the lyrics of "The Drop that Contained the Sea" by Christopher Tin, with the performance of the Angel City Chorale.
    Link to the lyrics video of Calling All Dawns:
    • Christopher Tin - Call...

    Here are two rules I followed in the creation of the video:
    1) When I had enough knowledge of the language of the song, I created a translation by myself, with the help of David Spada (where you find grammatical mistakes, that's where I didn't ask his help), instead of using the one on the digital booklet. This choice was born from the idea that, since songs are in their original language, and not in their translations, the best way to understand the meaning of the songs (beyond learning the language and using interlinear glosses xD) is to have an highly literal translation.
    I don't know if you'll enjoy my work, since a literal translation is surely less poetical than a free one, and since maybe there is a reason for Christopher Tin chose those translation on the booklet; but I felt I had to do that while I was working on this video.
    2) I wanted to give the same space to every soloist; since some songs were repeated by different soloists in different days, I mixed the videos of the two different days.
    Concerning recurring melodies, here we don't have as much as on Calling All Dawns; the only recurring melody is the water theme, to that Christopher Tin gives a large and amazing comment at the beginning of the digital booklet of the album. The reprises by me found of this water theme are at the beginning of the video, as presentation of the album.
    Hope you'll enjoy the video :)
    Song List:
    00:11 Water Prelude
    01:58 Haktan Gelen Şerbeti
    06:14 Temen Oblak
    13:42 Iza Ngomso
    18:10 Tsas Narand Uyarna
    22:31 Passou o Verão
    29:42 Devipravaha
    35:18 Seirenes
    46:01 Haf Gengr Hriðum
    51:00 Waloyo Yamoni
    [Following the introduction to the previous video, the Calling All Dawns Lyrics/Live Video; here is the origin creation of this video too]
    There is plenty of elements in Christopher Tin's albums: it doesn't concern only music (of course, music is what ties all together), but also linguistics (every song is in a different language), literature (every text is an excerpt from a pre-existent text adapted to an original music), philosophy (the cycle structure of albums, their religious/social/poetic content); this is what, in my opinion, makes his work of great artistic and cultural value.
    I wanted to study his songs, especially their texts, and the best way to do that was to read lyrics and translations simultaneously with the music; Christopher Tin allowes us to do that with a free download of his albums' digital booklets in his official website; anyway, to make things even easier, and to promote Christopher Tin's works, I created what I'd have liked to find when I just knew Christopher Tin, a Live with Lyrics; in this way, though songs are a little bit different, the vision is surely less demanding.

    I believe future musicologists will recognize Christopher Tin as one of the great contributors to the choral repertoire. He's brought more diversity to the western musical tradition than any other "modern classical" composer I can think of.

      although the works are multilignual, I guess Tin got inspiration from Chinese culture as well. To Chinese, water is the softest and hardest matter in the world, at the same time. Soft because it's shapeless, hard because with time, -- it's' patience --, it can sculture anything on earth.

    I came here to put this on as background music and then ended up being fascinated by the lyrics, making a cup of mint tea, and putting everything else off to watch this from start to end. I thought I loved this album but it never hit me like this.
    The only thing I wonder about is whether the translation of Passou o Verão is better than the one in the booklet - seems awkward at times but then they both do. In any case I won't pretend I wasn't as teary-eyed as the violinist at 29:08.
    Incidentally, interesting how the the melodic line at 35:05 is briefly similar to the ocean theme in "Peasants at Sea" (Kristina från Duvemåla, Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvæus). Same music inspired by the ocean.

  • @EduNauta95
    @EduNauta95 9 лет назад +43

    Impressive translation work! The studio album is technically quite better, but the group here puts *a lot* of emotion in the music, specially the soloists, so maybe it balances out.

    • @ErktheEngineer
      @ErktheEngineer 9 лет назад +2

      Aeduh I agree that the studio version is technically better overall, but are the soloists even different? They sound really similar, and the techniques they employ seem to be pretty specialized (although I'm no expert by any means).

    • @EduNauta95
      @EduNauta95 9 лет назад +7

      Erik Kariniemi I think that the soloist try very hard to mimic the tone of the studio version and did a great job trying as well to sing in the language with the proper accent. In the song in Portuguese, for example, the singer mimics the brazilian accent very well, although many of the words she says actually don't exist, she doesn't say the text well xD

    • @EduNauta95
      @EduNauta95 9 лет назад

      Aeduh In 21:25 I think the singer misses the note, though, doing a Fa instead of Mi. I played the flute simultaneously and it sounds about right. Plus, when you hear it something wrong goes off.

    • @ErktheEngineer
      @ErktheEngineer 9 лет назад +1

      Aeduh Yeah that was kind of painful. That happens often in opera as well, and I'm not sure why. It's almost like they get caught on the wrong side of the vibrato for a bit.

    • @CelticBotansDigitalArt
      @CelticBotansDigitalArt 9 лет назад +4

      Aeduh I think she is mimicing the Portuguese-Portugal accent, since in the original album the singer (Dulce Pontes) Is Portuguese - but yeah, haha, some of the words she sings are prononced wrong indeed xD She hasa gorgeous voice/interpretation though, I think that kinda balances with the mistakes

    Christopher Tin is a true genius. His music is outstanding. I love everything he has composed. Therefore, I am not terribly happy to say what I have to say. As a native speaker of the Portuguese language, I have to say that soloist Kat Green is unfortunately not speaking good Portuguese at all. Despite a high dosage of peaceful and gentle good will, one can hardly understand what she utters. Whatever that is, it is most certainly, not good Camões Portuguese at all. The text is not written in good Camões Portuguese either. There are several huge translation flaws. For instance: At 22:40, the phrase "Passou o verão" is translated as "Summer has gone" on the top of the screen; and as "summer has come" on the bottom of the screen. The translator could not be certain which one of the alternatives was right. There may be only one correct alternative, and that is the top one. The bottom one ("summer has come" ) has to go. At 24:49: "Estio" means dry weather, aridity, drought, but not at all "glow". At 24:58: "Humas" means "some". It does not mean "Human", at all. At 26:43 the translation is, once again, simply wrong. And the list goes on and on. The same can be said about the singer's pronunciation. At 25:57, for instance, her pronunciation omits a word that is written and introduces some strange word that is not written at all, so that her speech is rendered meaningless. She is also unable to pronounce nasal sounds. Thus words such as "opiniões" are completely mispronounced. Furthermore, her acting was, for the most part, overacting. What needed to be dramatically stressed was not. Everything else was unnecessarily and artificially stressed. And as a whole, the end result was quite poor, totally different from the rest of the album, which is a masterpiece. It would have been nice if real native-speaking Portuguese people could have been invited to give a hand, with both, the translation and the singing. That is quite understandable because foreigners frequently do poorly at spelling and/or singing a foreign language. Both their spelling and pronunciation are usually not as perfect as those produced by native speakers. That is, quite probably, also my case as a foreign speaker, because English is my third language. In any event, that is certainly the case with both the translator and the singer. They could use some help with their Portuguese spelling and pronunciation as well. That is the only flaw I have noticed in the entire album, which is, as I have said, a masterpiece, because perfectionist Christopher Tin is, as I have said, a remarkable true genius. Christopher Tin has declared repeatedly just how important feedback like this is for an artist like him. I do hope my humble but sincere remarks can help him remember to invite native Portuguese-speaking reviewers, so as to reach new heights of perfection in the future for the divine auditory and visual pleasure of a large share of the world population who loves him dearly. Thank you.

    • @notdreadyet
      @notdreadyet 9 лет назад +2

      giosialu Alessandro, again, I so appreciate your work on this. The problem with using share and "start at" is that many people will think that's too much work and won't listen. Folks, especially kids, want to be able to put RUclips videos on their playlist, but they won't do that with an hour-long video, and so your video is missed by a lot of its audience. Plus, you lose the chance of having comments and play counts on each song. Is it difficult, technically? It seems like you have already done all of the heavy lifting.

    • @notdreadyet
      @notdreadyet 9 лет назад +1

      notdreadyet Plus, a 4 minute video has a much bigger chance of going "viral" than an hour video, don't you think? It's much easier to say, "Watch this amazing four minutes!" than "Take an hour out of your day." I sang in this performance and love your addition to it.

    Is the soloist in “Summer Has Gone” pronouncing the words correctly? I’m familiar with Spanish but not Portuguese, though the two are similar, this song sounds nothing like spanish in any way.

      Spanish and Portuguese do sound rather different. That said, her pronunciation is quite off in my opinion (not a native speaker but have learned Brazilian Portuguese to decent fluency while living there).

      Accent isn't perfect. It is rather like any American one speaking Portuguese.
      But it is a lot better that previous concert song "se é pra vir que venha".

      The soloist isn't native so words were mostly imperceptible.. love the music but was painfull to ear my language being so badly used. surely they could've find a portuguese performer 😢

    Bad choice for the portuguese singer.
    I can't understand a word she sings in my own language without reading the subtitles...
    I wonder if the other languages are like this =/
