Joe said in interviews that he was trying to picture Micks "young life" as he wrote the lyrics for this song. Joe also said that Mick was notouriously allways late to rehersals with The Clash but that "that kind of musicality was worth waiting for".

What a great lesson Adrian! This song holds a special place in my heart/memory because very early in my guitar playing journey, I tried to learn a bunch of Clash songs with my best friend (and first bandmate). I remember having a lot of difficulty with this song - it never occurred to me to try any alternate tunings (back then I didn't even know any haha). I do remember thinking that the bass parts were all awesome in their songs and really add a ton to the overall feel.
As a quick aside, your Tele is developing some really nice wear now! Looking and sounding great as always!

the stand out track from an album of bangers. My favourite clash song. thanks for transcribing. Mick Jones an absolute genius and only he could have written this song. Strummer a great sopng writer but didnt have the life experience that Jones graphically recorded in this track. Just brilliant.

I brought this song into a guitar lesson once in the mid-90's. My guitar teacher was right about all the notes, but I always thought something was off in the verse, don't get me wrong, I still love my guitar teacher to this day, but you just explained it. I knew it was a higher pitch than just chords. Thanks mate.

I'm another one that was around when this song came out...it was years before I finally realized it was in open tuning! :-) Thank you for this...it's one of The Clash's best and deserves the full attention you've given it! It always amazed me that The Clash went from White Riot to the subtlety of Lost in the Supermarket in just a few short years given the song's relative complexity.

Great lesson of a great track as usual Adrian. One thing I've always wondered; why do you (and other experienced guitarists) go up the other end of the neck, only to return to the same fret you were on to find the next note/chord? Thanks
