In 2000 I sailed in a Benetau Oceanis 36 from Lagos to Swansea in a force10 gale with winds gusting to 60 knots.Under bare poles and a storm jib speeds reaching 14 knots surfing down the waves. That was a real butt clencher. Believe me lads when I say:”You ain’t seen nuthin yet!
Now that is proper ocean sailing! To little sail is much safer than to much sail for sure 👍 you lads work so well together, keep pushing on when conditions allow. Thanks for a great Sunday evening video 👌 fair winds ⛵🏴☠️
Nice video. A friend was told ( by a man who knows of such things) ' If your'e thinking of putting a reef in, it's probably too late, if your'e thinking of shaking a reef out, go and have a cup of tea'. I've found it to be about right. Nice time of the year to be going, enjoy yourselves.
Great video, no glamor, just real life sailing! Night sailing really amplifies your impressions. By the way, the courtesy flag should be flown on the starboard side... you wouldn’t want to offend the locals! 😎
Thanks very much glad you're enjoying the videos, you are totally right on the Night-Time sailing we have however changed our courtesy flag on the starboard side since the video
Hi Adam & Luke, a part of this video showed to us the raw side of sailing, and there are times when silences say much more than words can ever say, and Adam, your piece to camera was for me so powerful. Anyone who has taken a boat to sea, will identify with this. You have fear of the sea, on the one hand and respect on the other, rub in some tiredness and a very rough sea that just will not abate, and you are left with a very anxious, tired, humble human being. After crossing the bay, that handshake spoke volumes to me. AND YOU BOTH DID IT !!!! Sorry if this sounds a bit cheesy OOPS !! Did I say that word ? Kind Regards, Barnacle Bern SY Cadbri SW Wales 👍👍
Wow thank you for your amazing comments Bernie 👍😎 it was an absolute pleasure to read. I particularly looked rather broken in that clip, was sleep deprived. At the time we were relying on SSB radio downloading whether files, we wish we would have had a satellite communication device to get proper weather, as we have now. It's a wonderful feeling being out at sea making passages but it also had its dark sides 🙄😁
Adam/Luke, nothing better like getting your sea legs on your trip across the Bay! Just a friendly suggestion, always reef before sunset! Relax, hydrate and then carry on south! Fair Winds! ⛵🇺🇸
When I sailed from Guernsey to La Coruna north west Spain back in 1997, it took 5 and a half days sailing and motor to get their. A full day before we reached land fall we could smell the pine trees. I'll never forget it. The sea was like silk and the colour of silk too.
New subscribers here, binge watching and trying to catch up. I find your obvious love of sailing, and each other very compelling. Trust your vessel, and each other, and you’ll be fine. Hoping for FWaFS to you.
Thank you so much for subscribing, we are super glad you're enjoying the videos we do love sailing I'm glad it shows and our motto is to look after each other, we do trust Atlas more than ever now she is so strongly built, we hope you have a fantastic day
I sailed across Biscay many years ago. As we crossed the 4000m contour the skipper said "if you fall overboard, don't try to stand up". Sound advice indeed! Best wishes for the rest of your voyage.
Well done guys been there done that...when the weather turns it's always a worry and then lacking sleep doesn't help. You both handled it well and so did Atlas. I sensed the emotion at the end, it was beautiful to see two brothers encouraging each other.... What an achievement well done both.
We were a little stressed and run down due to lack of sleep because of the bad weather. Atlas handled it in her stride, no breakages! Thanks for your great comments Micky 😎
Brilliant lads, well done! Just remember the crew will always give before the boat so I’d say being on a Rival 34 you shouldn’t have any worries! She’s built for ocean crossings boys. I think I’m correct but really you should fly the Q flag (yellow) until you’ve cleared customs and then the courtesy flag which should be on the starboard side of spreader…. I know most ships which dock don’t bother with this procedure and either fly both and the same time or not at all. If we see a ship flying our flag upside down we normally let them know and it’s amazing how many don’t understand there’s a correct way! Safe sailing boys
Thanks Pill 👍 she is a very strong boat and as you said built for crossing oceans, she will definitely look after us. We have moved our courtesy flag to be starboard spreader where it should have been. We have a Q flag and have used it before we we sign in with customs and immigration. Thanks for the information and your comments 😁👍
The tale of two brothers, one in a tee shirt the other in a jacket and hat both comfortable, you are right about the shipping lane, get the marine traffic app free subscription and zoom out over the route and the shipping highways stand out. Well done guys a rough few days
I've only done the Bay of Biscay crossing once and that was in my mates Cat. It was an horrendous crossing in 2006 but we only saw one ship and one yacht and got blown in to Gijon in Northern Spain or would have had to motor for several hundred miles to stay outside of the Spanish mainland. The forecast rarely is the same as the reality. Your boat is well up to it and a wind vane is the way to go for that type of sailing. Great video's keep em coming.
Sounds like you had a bad crossing, like a lot of people Gazza. It can be a real unforgiving place. We do feel safe in our boat she is a good old strong girl, and the wind vane was one of the best things we bought 😎👍
My Dad used to tell us of his posting to Hong Kong in a troop carrying ship. The most scared he'd ever been was crossing the Bay of Biscay during a storm. The propeller would be airborne for what seemed like ages, and the whole ship would then shudder as it crashed back into the sea again. He reckoned adrenaline was definitely brown.😊 Well, done though lads.
The bay of Biscay has a formidable reputation due to it's unpredictable weather, strong southwesterly winds and a lee shore. Sorry for the late reply we have just completed a long offshore passage
Best video yet!!! But it wasn’t ridiculous - you were deep sea on a 34’ sailing boat. But best of all you made it to a safe anchorage to rest, recuperate and fight (sail) another day.
Wow gents i could feel the tension in that vid but you handled it well i just wish your videos were longer as i really do enjoy them .Keep up the great work fellars and enjoy yourselves .Be safe .

Seems you had some troubles with the winds lads. A month ago whilst you were sailing down to Spain I remember looking at the Windy app saying to myself “I sure hope the Sailing Brothers aren’t out there now”. Well sure enough you were. You survived it thanks to your incredible boat Atlas and lived to tell the tale. I know how wonderful it is to smell the harbor after having made a rough passage. Enjoy your stay in the Canaries. Buen rato (have a good time).
We just wish we had the Garmin inreach satellite communication on that passage Cathy. Not knowing the weather was the worst. We were relying on SSB radio downloading weather files at the time. Atlas took it in her stride 😎
Yet another great episode guy's nice sailing, great to see like taking things more seriously, wearing is life vest, harness you guys are like to pease in a pod thing for each other, reaching when ya'll see possible danger really great teamwork, you sense of smell will get better as you go further south, yes some good rest is needed for when ya'll set off from Spain have fun because we are shirley enjoying ya'll adventure guy's 🤙
Ah yes! My 28 minute Sunday sailing bros fix, Adam you looked proper scared when you were chatting in the cabin? It looked scary! Atlas took it in her stride 👌 It is what it is lads, Hope you are having a great time in the canaries? I seen your weather update on Facebook earlier, it’s going to get windy! Stay safe lads, until next time, Take care
Thanks Martin 👌 I was pretty darn knackered 😴 and we were scared due to lack of weather forecasting due to relying on SSB grib files. Now we have satellite communication 😁 much happier 😊 the Canaries are amazing Martin, we could live here 😄
Great video guys. I'm sorry Biscay was rough, but at least in the not too distant future, you can look back fondly on the crossing. It did make for good watching though. Cameras NEVER show how high the wavea are. I'm so happy for you, that you are able to make the Atlantic crossing. Stay safe
Biscay was a nice plotting until the last 30 hours, shame really. Glad it happened in a way, as we can look back on it and definitely learnt from the experience. You're right the wave never look as big as they are on camera
Sorry lads had to wait for Adele to stop singing before watching your video on the big screen, I could really feel your excitement & apprehension entering the bay of Biscay as the wind was picking up lol, typical but you sailed the boat well congrats’s on crossing the Biscay great video can’t wait for the next, fair winds.
Adele before us!! 😤 We have crossed the Biscay before with no with no problems but this time it bit back. It didn't help that we were very tired as sleeping was difficult in those conditions. We were really glad to get the anchor down
I've been across Biscay in big seas but we had a strong crew and it was exhilarating rather than scary, very different when just the two of you. This was before AIS and it was quite a challenge to keep a good watch and avoid the fishing boats and other traffic. Great decision to take advantage of shelter and rest.
It wouldn't have been so bad if we had decent weather forecasting, rather than relying on SSB radio downloading weather files. So glad we have have a two-way satellite communication device now. Also the AIS is fantastic, especially at night
Felt for you guys & looked like Adam was on the verge of tears. Awesome how you guys handle the tough times. With any way of life, you gonna have those big waves even if it's metaphorically. Definitely think it was a good idea to anchor up & have a well earned rest. Where you anchored looked so lovely too
I did feel pretty broken at that particular moment Mish. The weather was awful, being pounded for 30 hours and lack of sleep got to me. We were relieved to drop the anchor in that lovely little bay
Well done chaps. You coped well with the difficult situation and also made the right decision to anchor a while and rest. I’m sure the rest of the trip will be much better. Enjoy! I’ll be following you!
Well done for your safe arrival…..growth always involves being out of your comfort zone, you are now better and more confident sailors for the experience……..your cahonas are significantly bigger than mine!
Another cracking video! Tough conditions but you handled it very well! I shall be using the Sailing Brothers weather scale from now on. "I've gone from two to one jumpers!" 👍😁🤣⛵ Still gutted I was out of the country and missed you guys in Cedeira. Maybe see you on the way home?
Atlas handled it very well, much better than us 🤔 the conditions were pretty challenging and we were glad to get the anchor down. We are down to shorts and t-shirts now. Hopefully we can catch up on the way home 👍
Thanks for sharing. Some really good footage and appreciate you sharing your feeling on camera. I see you have jack lines and hope they provided some security when out on the sea. Especially when u were on watch. Till next week. Thank you!
No problem at all. We loved filming and sharing our experience on this crossing, good and bad. The Jack lines are essential and make us feel much safer when we are clipped on. Until next week 👍
Well done lads , very reassuring to know Atlas took it in her stride and arrived safe and sound at anchorage a good shakedown before the crossing telling you she is well capable!! looking forward to more adventures stay safe
Hi Guys, great episode and fantastic to see you making it across Biscay. My understanding of Courtesy Flags though is the following: "The Q Flag should be flown when entering the 12 -mile limit. In this way, one cannot be accused of trying to slip in unnoticed and in fact, in some countries yachts have got into trouble for not hoisting the Q Flag until they enter the port. Also to avoid any misunderstanding, it is advisable to try to contact the Port Authorities on VHF, especially in this countries which do not readily welcome yachts." Hopefully you haven't found this out the hard way, but the Q Flag, especially in Covid times, is more important than the courtesy flag. Hope the next part of your journey arrives soon, it is great to hear about warmth as it is freezing in Cardiff at the moment!! Fair winds
Really glad you enjoyed the episode Gary 👍😎. Thanks for all the information, very much appreciated indeed. We really appreciate you commenting. We have got a Q flag and did hoist it soon after. Probably wasn't up as long as it should have been
A great episode, loved that you show the reality of offshoring... it's not all fun! Congrats on the Biscay crossing, looking forwards to following on the next leg.
Really enjoyed that lads, like the chart and weather updates and what your doing each day, all that information shares your adventure,,,another good job!
Ahoy Adam amd Luke! You popped up on my RUclips AIS. A great episode. I hope your Northern Spanish anchorage allows you to recharge your batteries before you next nautical episode. Safe sailing.
Well done the Bro’s! A very tricky passage to traverse the Bay of Biscay but you did it with confidence and assurance. Some good reefing on show and great to follow the ups and downs of the passage. Good luck with the next section of your voyage.
Another great upload guys. I will say about your near misses, put it down to part of your learning curve. This will only help you on your epic journey 😊
Hello all, if you have enjoyed this video please subscribe it really helps us out.

Unnerving stuff gentlemen 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Well done, another great video 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks very much Andy
Chins up lads. Well done!
😎👍 cheers
Thanks for sharing. Some really good footage and appreciate you sharing your feeling on camera. I see you have jack lines and hope they provided some security when out on the sea. Especially when u were on watch. Till next week. Thank you!
No problem at all. We loved filming and sharing our experience on this crossing, good and bad. The Jack lines are essential and make us feel much safer when we are clipped on. Until next week 👍
Brill lads loving your adventure
That's fantastic to hear Wayne 👍
Well done lads stay safe
Will do, thanks Robert 👍
Well done lads , very reassuring to know Atlas took it in her stride and arrived safe and sound at anchorage a good shakedown before the crossing telling you she is well capable!! looking forward to more adventures stay safe
We would not want to be in anything else.Atlas is a good solid ocean crossing machine😃 it was fantastic to get the anchor down
Hi Guys, great episode and fantastic to see you making it across Biscay.
Also to avoid any misunderstanding, it is advisable to try to contact the Port Authorities on VHF, especially in this countries which do not readily welcome yachts."
Hopefully you haven't found this out the hard way, but the Q Flag, especially in Covid times, is more important than the courtesy flag.
Your right, it's not all sunshine, bikinis and pina coladas, it's offshore sailing Billy 😃
Well done to you both. Loving the videos.
Thanks Sharon. Sorry about this horrible thumbnail 😲
Well done lads, that didn’t look easy.
It was a little tricky, but we made it 😊
Really enjoyed that lads, like the chart and weather updates and what your doing each day, all that information shares your adventure,,,another good job!
Thanks very much Ray 😎👍
Well done guys, really brilliant video.
No problem thanks for watching 👍
Ahoy Adam amd Luke! You popped up on my RUclips AIS. A great episode. I hope your Northern Spanish anchorage allows you to recharge your batteries before you next nautical episode. Safe sailing.
Glad to be popped up on your AIS RUclips Ken! We did recharge and the next day we popped into a marina to check in 👍

Thanks very much Sarah, really glad you're enjoying watching our adventures 👍
Well done the Bro’s! A very tricky passage to traverse the Bay of Biscay but you did it with confidence and assurance. Some good reefing on show and great to follow the ups and downs of the passage. Good luck with the next section of your voyage.
Thanks Peter 👌
It was a passage we will never forget, pretty sure we are going to have more like that and worse 🙃
Sailed the Bay 13 times. 11 calm crossings, 2 really hairy ones. Irish Sea 14 crossings, 13 gales, 1 calm.. Contessa 32. Stay safe lads. Q flag on port spreader, courtesy flag starboard spreader. Enjoy the adventure.
That's put our crossing into insignificance John, much respect!! Thanks for the advice 👍
So glad you guys are safe
It’s great watching your adventure , hope you enjoyed cedira 😊
Remember curtesy flag starboard spreaders…
Nicola and John .
Thanks very much John, really glad you're enjoying the adventure so far. We have now moved our courtesy flag to the starboard spreader 👍
