Jones is as talented a QB as I've seen.
6'5, 230 lbs, blazing fast top end speed, and good accuracy. 24 TDs in 12 games as a rookie, sky looked like the limit.
He was destroyed by an incompetent franchise - 5 coordinators in 6 years, and now his body is so battered and bruised he looks like a Bo Jackson or RG III post-injury case.

One of the biggest knocks on him coming out was his ability to read defenses... and the rookie CB on the Seahawks last season confirmed he hasn't really improved that much
Jones might have had physical tools, but his mental tools were always below par and now he's losing his physical tools... long past time to move on

How Geno wasn't even good enough to be a backup QB, how Webb should be backup, etc. Giants fans boycotted games and threatened Mara when Geno got a chance here. Now Geno is a NFL Comeback Player of The Year, beating out Saquon Barkley and is another team's treasure. I'd love to have Geno right now! I've always liked Geno. Giants fans wasted 10 years of my life as a Giants fan!

TLDR- Dave Gettleman did not draft DJ, Mara did. He's been doubling, tripling and quadrupling down on his mistake ever since.
2019 - Mara overdrafted DJ because he reminded him of Eli. Prior to the draft in 2019 Mara met DJ and was quoted as then saying "like talking to a 22 year old Eli"..Mara was also on record back then saying as they were known to be looking for someone to replace Eli, that he (Mara) plays a significant role in who plays QB for Giants and who they decide to draft at QB
2020 -Pat shurmur Fired
2021-Jason Garret Fired (OC)
2021- Joe Judge Fired
2021- Mara doubled down on DJ saying "we have done everything possible to screw this kid up"... *A tell Mara is pushing and defending his chosen QB. Why say this at the Joe Schoen intro press conference?
2022 - DJ plays "okay" and wins a playoff game. Afterwards Mara was gushing and was quoted sayiny onDJs performance, it was "Gratifying".. *another tell imo Mara is and has been pushing DJ
2022- During contract negotiations, it was reported Joe Schoen was playing hardball with DJ.. Jon Mara really wanted DJ back and actually talked to him on the phone and told him of much he wanted him back. Mara was driving force in getting contract done. DJ signs $160m contract in 11th hour. Saquon is tagged
2023 to now-- Mara is quoted as saying he's still Glad he gave DJ that contract

Let me tell you, coaching was bad, play calling was terrible, but DJ was terrible as well and truthfully he needs to stop allowing the coaches to call the weak ass plays.
The play calling was good. We lead the league in WR separation. What more do you want? Jones would only throw to a curl route or slant. Cant blame the coach for any of this.

Gentlemen, lonnnnng time Giants fan here, back to 1975, Pop was a Season Tix holder since Yankee Stadium, so I got to enjoy some of the very best of Giants football personally from 81 t0 94 from section 326 at Ol' Giants Stadium. I listen to your podcast religiously, just subscribed. You guys are fantastic, keep up the great work you do! That out of the way, I cannot agree with you more on this take. There is a smugness and stubbornness to Shoen and Daboll, and I have to be honest it's wearing really thin. Granted, there are good things happening, and this season is far from finished, but the evidence is out there, the writing is on the wall, and two years of this lack of readiness and disgraceful performance in a home opener, even more so this round, against a comparable opponent, in front of Giants legends and a fan base that badly wants to embrace this generation and move forward, it's just purely intolerable. Going into this season with Jones as a mediocre, maligned, oft-injured, uncontested QB1, having allowed Tyrod to move on, signing Lock, and teetering on Cutlets, a good portion of the outcome for this part of the saga is this regime's very large cross to bear. Let's hope and pray they can turn this around in some way, but should they, the cycle of this level of expectation just continues and continues. It's utterly sad, how this organization and it's quarterback are currently the laughing stock of the NFL, other team's players, fanbases, social media and the like.
It's my 64th year following The Giants. The problem is ownership. It's always been ownership. How come the Rooney's have been fielding a fairly consistent competitive Steelers team for decades and The Giants admin can't?? Sadly the fans can't trade ownership. Getting rid of Dabs and Schoen may soon be necessary but you can't count on John Mara to make a good decision when it comes to their replacements.
Going into this season with zero competition for DJ is Schoen fault, we might have a bad GM problem.
ownership isn't whiffing on draft picks and free agents year in and year out.

Blaming one person is always a fools errand. It's a team game FFS! Penalties, poor play calling, poor blocking therefore no run game, and receivers who were not as open as they were reputed to be. When a team throws 40-50 passes they almost always lose. No Hyatt, no Tracy. Play those guys too.
The blocking was fine. He walked into the sacks. We lead the league in WR separation. It jumps out at you when you watch the tape. We were behind and didnt try to run. Jones makes the team quit. You saw the spark when Tyrod came in last year. 100% one player can destroy a team.

It’s mind boggling that Shoen and Daboll put their jobs and reputations on the line on such a faulty premise, that they should make Jones the unquestioned QB1 going into the season post Saquon no less . It’s insane. Makes me wonder if Mara mandated Jones being the guy this season and that might be providing the GM and Coach the security to ride this poop storm out without fear of losing their jobs.

The "O" line sucks and he knows it.....he's shell shocked.....he's suffering from PTSD
3 sacks were on Jones last game. He wanted to scramble and walked right into them. Its not PTSD. You see the same things in year 2 because hes inaccurate. To cut down on the pics he had to stop throwing deep and check the ball down. Even the 5 yard passes were inaccurate last game.

I’ve been a Giants fan since ‘82 or so. I’ve literally heard everything and everyone, and the vast majority are just noise. No real football knowledge, on both the X’s and O’s front, or the front office front….but you guys are arguably the best I’ve seen. I don’t agree with many of your opinions, and wouldn’t mind seeing you both suffer a bit for your drama🤣 but I digress. Keep up the absolutely scientific breakdown of tape. It’s very difficult to digest film with a neutral attitude, but you both do your best. You’ve won me over, and I actually follow you now. I’m working my way up to some likes…time will tell.

I am not shifting blame to Schoen and Daboll. The real truth is Schoen wanted a new QB since he got hired, but I am convince the Owner Mara made clear that he do anything he wanted, but they needed to give Jones a chance to play and prove he is not or is the team franchise QB. Unfortunately Daboll got the most of Jones in 2022 and looked like there was a possibility that Jones can be that QB and Jones just happened to be at the end of his rookie contract they had to make a decision sign Barkley or Jones and at first they tried to sign Barkley fir st, but Giants first year GM had to deal with the lack of cap space and having to fill lots of holes on the roster. Barkley wanted to get that huge contract, but RB market did not favor the RB position as a high paying position. The Giants knew they would not be able to move up from picking 25th overall in the draft for a QB, plus they has so many open spots on the roster and needed talented players, so they sign Jones coming off his best season and winning a playoff game. Yes the Jones contract is a disaster, but it seems that it's more of situational time has not fallen to the Giants. Take last season for instance they no way in the world the Giants should had won 6 games and because of that that removed them from being able to draft one of the top 3 QB in 2024 draft. As of now we Giants fans are going to have to suck up another year of losing football the only issue I have is will actually be a franchise QB coming out in 2025 draft? As of right now I don't see one coming out and that would be just the Giants luck!

I love that you pointed this out. It's tough to say tbh; I would lean development since virtually everyone who covered the draft/studied the draft were high on the two first rounders...that could be used as a scapegoat and a referendum on Daboll if this season spirals south.

If we didn’t draft them, the next team would have. You can’t put that on Joe. There has to be another reason for it. I really just think it comes down to luck. Daboll hates Jones; you can openly see it in his face multiple times. Mara wanted that deal; all accounts were Schoen was trying to playing hard ball and then you heard Jones’ agent went to Mara directly. And Mara who loves mediocrity and being unrealistic was happy to double down again once Schoen and Daboll couldn’t get the short list of guys they said they loved. Mara is just a version of the fans who have gotten too used to making endless excuses for the Giants QB position.

You probably have to look no further than the guy at the top John Mara. I don't know (can't be 100%) but I'm confident that Daboll didn't want to hand the reins to Jones this season. Schoen and his scouting staff have been sub-par for 3 years. I hate to think we're starting over after 3 years but if this team looks like they did week 1 going forward where do they go?

They had not much choice after signing him to the four year contract and being committed in cap space for at least the first two years. They had to eat it this year with DJ before deciding on a long term option. They weren’t gonna be a good team with another backup type QB and can’t pay a top free agent when they don’t have much cap space. They tried the draft, but none of the QBs they liked were available for them.

It is the head coaches job getting a team ready and competitive. The Giants were not week one of this year or week 1 last year. QB is part of the problem, but so is coaching.

They gave him a contract based on the Vikings game. They should have kissed him goodbye after the Eagles game.

In year three the Giants are still a bottom three team , Daniel Jones is still the QB , and the fanbase has no hope. This game is exactly what I imagined the Giants would look like the moment they drafted Nabers instead of McCarthy/Penix . Providing no competition for Jones was criminal negligence .

There is a real issue that nobody talks about. On a pure money level, free agents do NOT want to sign with a city that sucks more taxes from your paycheck, than almost every other city

Just a straight DINGER with zero slice or draw - likely landed on top of that hill 30ish yards off the green and rolled on but I’ll never know for sure. Was STUNNED to walk up and see it pin high. Best drive of my life. Haven’t come close to repeating it. Have no idea what form , technique etc I used to get that back 😂

I agree. It's the guys at the top that deserve the blame. And having watched Hard Knocks, after seeing Joe Shoen and Brian Daboll in action, I have little confidence that they can salvage this.
We needed a backup that has actually won some games, like Jameis Winston. Lock has done absolutely nothing in his NFL career, he was never serious competition. I know the FA pool was shallow but that makes not getting Jameis or resigning Tyrod egregious
Jameis was around Sean Payton and Bruce Arians and failed each time. I'd rather have someone who can teach a developmental guy and is reliable (ie not Tyrod!).

I feel like the the plan is to build the team and have a great chance of finding a QB in the draft. The same plan all a long, first year we made the playoffs and won a game and at not chance at a QB the 2nd year we won to many games with devito and Tyrod and couldn’t get the QB in the draft. Why upgrade the QB positions and be middle tier with not a chance at the top QBs in this draft
The NFL is a QB league. So the most important task a GM has is the objectively answer this question at the end of each season. Do I have a QB on my roster that I truly believe can some day win a Super Bowl. If not, then move on immediately. Shame on you Joe Schoen.

I was ahead of the curve on Jones, but now I want the GM gone...Barkley made Jones look good. but not drafting a QB in this years draft is criminal...there are no QBs in next years draft. Drew lock would be cut if his money was not guaranteed...Joe Milton and Spencer rattler were drafted in late rounds...

Great listen first time. Instant subscribe. I'm now convinced that Brian Daboll hates Daniel Jones. They have no chemistry. You saw it on Sunday when the head coach was calling the offensive plays - we had no momentum, no cohesion, and no rhythm. Yes, Jones is clearly in his own head and lacks a ton of feel, but I still think he lacks more confidence than talent. Personnel improvement is on the coaching staff. Daboll already walks around like the captain of a doomed ship. Whether Jones is the best QB1 or not, Daboll is clearly no quarterback whisperer if that's our the QB1/offensive performance in Week 1. Daboll's looking more and more like a sore loser, and if he doesn't get gritty fast I fear he's lined up to lose the locker room.

When a young Qb is drafted, you have to ensure you place him in a situation that leaves little doubt whether he is the answer or not. The Giants didn't do that and we got this long, drawn out debate on trying to figure out if his development was stunted by all the instability around him or if he's limited. And what's more is it was at the heels of Eli's tenure, which many criticized the Giants for ruining the last 10 or so years of his career with a poor support cast -- it made no sense his "cliff" came after 2011, his strongest season ever. So naturally, you would expect less from a young QB.
A young QB doesn't need to be playing with an all-pro support cast (that inherently produces doubt too actually, bc you need to see a QB play under adversity), but you can't have a terrible o-line and subpar support weapons for him to play with -- that alone breeds inconsistency and doubt with very good QBs, let alone with a young developing QB. And people can argue that it was obvious regardless of the context DJ was placed in -- point is, it wasn't obvious to the Giants front office and coaches. It was not obvious to 3 regimes! Whether people want to call everyone idiots -- the fact is you have people with real football knowledge become uncertain about DJ due to circumstances.
It's a simple lesson the Giants should've already learned. I don't care about cap space... learn to build a team that's ready to develop/evaluate a young QB or either bench him or don't draft him at all... this whole idea of taking advantage of rookie contracts is ludicrous when an organization doesn't even understand how to build a team on a fundamental level.
