I wanna buy oil pastels for the first time and strongly consider the Caran d'Ache ones. Knowing that you also tried the neo pastels - how big is the difference to a bit more affordable pastels?
@@basho4306 As of now, I prefer the pentel ones, but mostly because I feel like I can be less precious with them. I would definitely recommend the Caran D'ache ones for those looking for creamier, softer, and richer pastels!
Love your aesthetic and approach to art PearFleur 💗 This video was so comforting and beautifully put together with all these vibrant colors, thank youu! ☀️
I have been using oil pastels as my main medium for many years. I have different brands which range in terms of hardness and pigment. (Sennelier being the softest/ most unctuous). I have developed a range of techniques including variations of the main ones you illustrate. I tend to use cheap acrylics as a ground on most supports as it adds depth to the work. I also apply pastels sometimes by using white spirit and unwrapping them so that I use the sides rather than the tip. Then I bathe the pastel gently and apply in bold strokes to cover larger areas. This is also excellent for using one colour to blend several others. (Sennelier also does an unpigmented pastel which is very useful for blending when you don't want to add colour.) It can and does get very messy. (My nails don't look like yours, sadly. lol) Another technique I use is to use oil pastel over chalk pastel and vice versa. It gives some interesting effects, particularly useful when doing something like a sky and adding clouds, as an example. I also use them over oil paints and when the paint is tacky and almost set. You can use the pastel to push the paint around and add a punch of colour. I use them on 'colorfast' paper which has a good tooth. Or canvas board with added texture using various things like sand and pummice. They are endless fun.
After my grandpa died a few years ago I got a bunch of his art supplies, many of which looked to have been untouched for decades judging by the styles of the packaging, and that included his oil pastels which were totally dried out which was a bummer to me, but I think his soft pastels are still functional so I gotta remember to learn how to work with those one day, and then another day get some decent oil pastels of my own cause it looks so fun to use.
I remember having to do oil pastels in art class and hating it because I couldn’t build up any color. Now I realize the teacher had probably given us the wrong paper😅 Watching you makes me want to try it again!
I bought these on my own as just something new to try as a very non-artistic person. My interest might've been held for longer than a week had I known I was trying to use pastels on basic drawing paper and that's a no-no, lol.
as an artist (my art is on my yt channel if you'd like to check it out) I can totally relate!! it was pretty hard to use oil pastels for me just because my art teacher gave me the wrong type of paper to use (she gave us regular construction paper :,))
@Ve3-j4h Dark Sky BadBlack sanded works with both types and all hardness grades of pastels. Technically speaking oil pastels will work on almost any support a person could come up with such as rocks, wood, various varieties of paper and canvas, glass, etc, etc, etc; however, to answer your question sanded papers work.
@Ve3-j4h Dark Sky BadBlack paper which is meant for oil painting bec the paper needs to be primed for oil medium. If not, then the oil in oil paint and oil pastels will "eat up" the paper and the oil will seep thru.
This is brilliant on so many levels: quality of instruction, level of detail, colours, techniques, inspiration, gradual building toward your final piece using all the techniques your demonstrated...wow! I have a set of oil pastels and have used them just a little for final touches on watercolours occasionally but you have opened up a new world! Thank you so much!!
Oh goody! Excited to watch this on my lunch break, and then again tonight when I spend some time in my sketchbook! Your videos always find me when I need them most.
I just tried oil pastels for the first time because of this video. I've had a small cheap pack of pastels in my drawer for ages but I've never used them but. Oh my god. They're so much fun it's like there's no pressure to make something perfect it's amazing
Your art is so beautiful! I remember highschool art classes, the teachers never taught us any techniques! We were just given materials and were told what to draw. There wasn't much experimentation. I'll need to try pastels again!
This pastel was brought to me by my father so so long ago. I remember my favorite colors and even the smell of it which I loved so much. Pastel was lost somewhere and I could neither find it nor recall the brand. And now I see this wonderful video. Thank you :)
I used to own a similar set of oil pastels and that's my first proper set of coloring tools, I still remember the joy of exploring different colors and textures of it!!!! thank you for such a lovely video which reminds me of my childhood!
Oh god the TALENTTT!!💖💖💖 I’ve been watching u for years and yet I’m still so amazed by how talented you are with every video you upload 😭💕💕 it’s so inspiring !!
I love how your videos are an equal mix of informative (showing how the pastels work on different paper), and relaxing! Very inspired to give oil pastels a shot for something both fresh and fun now, the colours are so rich and vibrant.
Glad to hear you get stuck too. I slow stitch when I can’t paint then I watch people like you for inspiration then I usually get an itch for painting again. You are a lovely painter . I like how you paint I could watch you all day .
You know, I think my mom gifted me a set of these same pastels a few years ago. I've honestly never touched them before, i always disliked the look of them when i saw my classmates at art uni using them. But I didn't even come to think about the techniques and outcomes you could get. I'm gonna try them now! Thanks for the inspiration, I do honestly love playing with other mediums.
Came to the comments to see any roasts on the birb. I don't understand how you expect any roasts when you have us all in awe of your art at the end of the vid XD Please make more of your journey with pastels!
I recently got some oil pastels and started drawing with them. I love their texture and how you can visibly notice the strands of colour they leave on the paper. You can see the journey of your painting.. also it's so fun mixing the colours and blending them into the paper. I love it!
Thank you for taking away my anxiety, I love your videos and I haven't seen them for a while, today I saw this one and I still feel the same calm as I did a few years ago when I watched your videos. I'm sorry if you don't understand my comment, I don't speak English and I translated what I wanted to write from a web page.
I remember using oil pastel before when I was younger, it was my preferred medium before watercolour because of how nice it was whenever I used them. I liked them more than crayons and it was the medium that made me discover my talent for art. The feeling you have when using it was soothing, the blending of it was satisfying and calm like in the video. It’s been a while since I last used it and I’m ready to use it again after watching this video, thanks.
this might sound rlly weird but i remember since I was little I DETEST using oil pastels. Used them one time for one of my art class and never again. This kind of inspired me to try it out after more than 5 years with some gifted oil pastels I’ve got from my birthday years back, thank you for the inspiration 😭
i was already kind of itching to try out oil pastels and this video just made me crave in trying it out!!! they look so fun and the textures you get are gorgeous

Lovely video. I have this same set, I bought it recently after digging out my old 12 set from the same brand and playing around with them and actually enjoyed blending the colours together. I had never seen anyone use them when I bought the first set so never understood what to do with them, got frustrated and put them aside but this time around I had so much fun with them. It helps that they are so cheap so you don’t have to feel too precious about it.
Love this! I've been thinking about adding pastels into my work a lot recently so I was really excited to see this video. I remember using this brand in school 🤔 I might have to go order some pastels now...
Yay! I was so happy to see an oil pastels video from you! I just started exploring them myself and it was a great to see how you tackled getting to know the materials and then finish that lovely painting!! I would love to see more oil pastels videos from you in the future 👏🏼
I blend with a latex glove and qtips. Oil pastels get super freaking messy, very quickly. Have clean up supplies close by if you decide to try them. Also put something down if you're on carpet.. like a towel. Learned that the hard way
stunning work as always!! 💘 i recently started using oil pastels to practice mini sketches and color theory before starting an oil piece. ive been feeling really unmotivated to create lately so this video helped a lot :)
I just discovered your account yesterday and I'm so obsessed... the way you present art is so refreshing and so much appreciation down to each stroke! Whenever you paint i can feel my breathe slowing down and calms my soul. Thank you for your wonderful presence!! p.s that bird is cute.. it somehow reminds me of nausica :')
One time I did a small copy of Dali’s Persistence of Memory painting, you know, the one w the melting clock, w the same oil pastels, and couldn’t believe how easy it was and how much it looked like the painting lol
I remember wanting to try oil pastels in an art class, but the ones we had were crumbling so much, I had a hard time enjoying the medium. Years later, I got something like the ones in the video now, and I can't wait to try them!
I love that your casual bird scratching came out ugly because it gives me confidence when I have a bad art day. Sometimes I can draw really well, other days everything looks like a scribble and like I lost my skills 😭
such beautiful work! it was so mesmerizing to watch your process and the ASMR was the cherry on top! I've never tried oil pastels but I've been meaning to test something new
I love how all the colors look blended together, so satisfying!! Also the colors you chose to draw with are all so nice, esp that mint green 👀 Were you using references to draw the faces? I feel I get into an art block bc I look at my files of references and I STILL can’t think of anything to draw >
What a wonderfully calm and relaxing video! I love that this is about pastels since I've also recently started painting with them. It's really really fun. How come these are so cheap though? If only I would've known earlier 😅
If you liked them, and it seems like you did, try mungyo or Paul rubens. They’re way better than pentel or bic pastels and aren’t as expensive as senellier.
i love oil pastels but it's been so long since i pulled them out! i just finished a very stressful (and for me, my very first) spring semester at college and once i send in my last research essay, i think i'll try something like this - it looks really fun! do you think it would work well with a mixed media of oil pastels over a watercolor base layer? i might try that but would be curious if you've had experience with it. thx as always for such a wonderful video
I have seen people using gouache as a base before putting on oil pastel. I think gouache has stronger color pay off, might be a better match to oil pastel. However I think watercolor is okay too
As long as the paint doesn't have a plastic texture - like acrylic or heavily mediumed oils - it should work. Remember though that the paint has to fully dry before layering and that oil pastels never dry unless you use some of the more recently developed oil pastel fixatives/varnishes to protect it
Yes, you can definitely paint over watercolour. If you use cold press paper, you will get some "tooth" so the oil pastel can stick better. Another tip, you can paint over your watercolour background with clear Liquitex gesso, so you keep the background and have some extra texture. You can also tint the gesso with an acrylic paint, to have some sort of underpainting, to avoid a totally white background. You can apply clear gesso on Kraft paper (paper bags! ♻️), Scraps of matboard, chipboard left over from writing blocks or cereal packaging. Hope you try oil pastels, they can be very versatile!
What's your experience with oil pastels? Do you hate it or love it?
Leave any questions below :-)
Absolutely love it 😍
Love them although they are kinda messyʕ•ᴥ•ʔ
Try Sennelier, you will love them. So creamy. Use your fingers to blend.
I wanna buy oil pastels for the first time and strongly consider the Caran d'Ache ones. Knowing that you also tried the neo pastels - how big is the difference to a bit more affordable pastels?

Been following you since the early days. You have such a great eye for art!
I taught elementary school art and loved using the Crayola Portfolio series with some Pentel oil pastels for extra whites, etc. Portfolios are soft so they break and smush easily which can be a drawback with kids and they are also water-soluable. But the colors are great and blend easily, looking fantastic even on sulphate construction paper. I used clear unscented AquaNet hairspray as fixative. Once a set that was sourced through our district distributor had yellows that molded once on the paper. I called Crayola from the classroom with the kids present and told the rep I had some unhappy campers in my room as their work was ruined. The company sent a total replacement set for free. I'm not a fan of the stiffness of oil pastels in general but cannot use chalk pastels, sadly, as I am allergic to the dust - as were some of my students.

Remember though that the paint has to fully dry before layering and that oil pastels never dry unless you use some of the more recently developed oil pastel fixatives/varnishes to protect it
Will be doing the same after I finish my assignments this semester! Can’t wait :)
