I remember when this hit in the arcades. It came in most MVS 4-slot cabs at the time and in 1990 it was the most beautiful game I had ever witnessed. It was a big part of the reason I became such a huge SNK fan for life. When you walked into an arcade and heard that crystal clear "Ninja Combat!" booming from a red cab...you knew what time it was. I have a funny story that involves Ninja Combat and my birthday that you all might enjoy. The year was 1990 and I was one of the very lucky kids to have a Sega Genesis and I thought it was the most amazing console ever. On my birthday my mom took me to Toys R" Us to get some Genesis games. While I was there, there were some guys dressed in all red with the letters SNK on their shirts setting up a kiosk. I enquiried what it was they were doing and they turned my attention to the AES display they just setup and playing on the stores AES was none other than Ninja Combat.... I immediately forgot the Genesis existed and was fixated on that game. I told my mom I wanted this game and that it would require getting a new machine which she reluctantly decided to buy me. So I grab the Neo Geo Gold card and two games to take up to the security counter (Ninja Combat and Super Spy). At this point one of Toys R" Us sales people asked my mother if she knew how expensive the AES Gold was with 2 games which irritated her. After all she got me my Nes, Master System, and Genesis when they were brand new so the price of these "little games" were of no consequence to her. We get up to the register and ring out....the total was like 1200 dollars after tax. She's like...that better be a typo and called them "insane." I so close...yet so far. I wound up getting 4 Genesis games and I was very happy but man did I want that AES. I eventually got one in 2008 and I still have it.
LOL i was about to call you the luckiest kid in the world. Excited about getting a new Genesis game and instead leaving with an AES and 2 games! Oh man almost got it. You probably came closer to owning one than any other kid did.
@nonentity2574 I know. I tried a few more times over the years to no avail. Me- "Hey mom, I bet the price of the Neo Geo AES is really low now that it has been at least a year! It has to be on sale." Mom- "Son, it's been about 8 weeks, and that sale better be massive. If it isn't 85% off, it isn't happening." (This became a running joke in my family for years).
Ninja Combat is one of the greatest arcade games of all time. Every time I went into any arcade, people were playing Ninja Combat on the Neo Geo. Coin after coin went into the machine. The game was fun to play, and the graphics and sound were far beyond any other hardware at the time. This playthrough shows someone playing who is excellent and knows all the tricks.
NintendoComplete for some reason I never realized this game had other playable characters besides blue guy and red guy 😂 but I haven’t played it in like 20 years and I was only like 8 at the time so I probably just sucked at it and never got far heh
Ninja Combat DEFINITELY IS a "Classic" Neo Geo title. Ninja Combat is one of the all-time greatest arcade games ever made. Every time I went to an arcade in the 1990s, I saw someone played Ninja Combat on the Neo Geo. The sound quality and graphic quality were amazing! The game was also incredibly fun to play.
I remember this game as a kid in the arcades and am shocked that I found this game by typing snk ninja which is all I remember. Can’t wait to replay this as a adult.
At 1:47 the music that plays is truly awesome! One of my favorite sounds ever in a game. The Neo Geo could produce "FM" sound from its 15 sound channels, and you really hear it in that part of the game. Even the games today simply don't sound that good most of the time, which is stunning considering they are on DVD.
Alright I finally found what this game is. I was just searching Neo Geo beat em ups and was like, this looks like it! I remember going with my parents to pool tournaments, there was this arcade cabinet there at the pool hall, and I always played Fatal Fury. Every now and then I would scroll through the other games on the cabinet and later dumped many quarters into this one. I thought I was dope when I made it far enough to use the big guy. I loved dropping rocks on everyone’s head. Thanks for the upload and bringing back the memories.
@BxxDxx Hoodoo Dude, I remember easily spending $5-$10 dollars every Saturday on this game in the arcade. This game and Sunset Riders is where all my money went when I was 10.
I spent 2 hours on google and got nothing because all I could remember for sure was 'let's go Joe, I'm ready pal'. It was in my local bakery when I was 11. I joined a group called over 40 gamers, they got me this vid
This is a good playthrough of a not-so-good game. Though I would have liked to see Joe(a ninja named Joe?) use other weapons besides the throwing stars and that long nunchaku thing.
Jogo lixoooooo o pior jogo do neo•geo Ohhh uma 💩 Daria 00000000000 estrelas e só minha opinião parece q os bixo tá indo fazer merda principalmente o gordinho parece q e difícil dar kkkkkk
I'm always disappointed when I see a game for a system as expensive and powerful as the NEOGEO that just looks so...average. Like, you have huge carts, and the animation is no better than a SNES or Genesis game. Sprites are huge, but also very static. Idle loops are totally phoned in, Street Fighter 2 does it better, again, on the SNES and Genesis with what a fifth the cartridge space? I feel like if you stripped the voice acting and the music, this game could be SNES, and why then are you paying $200 for it to run on your $650 system? I mean, in '91, this thing was in direct competition with Final Fight, no? The sprite scaling is the only thing it's got going for it, and it's not even very well done. Castlevania IV was more imaginative with its far more limited Mode 7 stuff.
1991? No, try early 1990...like January 1990 as a launch title for the AES. Even though this was not a great game the Snes in 1991 was not running this game for several reasons. 1. The amount of sprites on screen without slowdown. 2. The amount of large sprites that litter the screen is something neither 16-bit console could do at the beginning of their life. 3. Sprite scaling all over the screen often times with several popping in and out at one time. 3. The crystal clear voice work in Ninja Combat in 1990 was unmatched even in the arcades. 4. The sprite warping you see in Ninja Combat wasn't properly emulated on the Sega Genesis or Snes until the late 1990's. Addendum- Comparing Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior from 1992 to a game from 1990 isn't a fair comparison at all. However Fatal Fury 2 on the AES is from 1992 and graphically there is no comparison that one could make that would see the Snes win in any category.
@@Sinn0100 Tech specs are nice, but if a game isn't using the hardware effectively they don't mean all that much. It's like owning a Ferrari that only ever drives 40kph to the grocery store. Why did you buy a Ferrari? That's what I mean. Visually, I find several games running on vastly inferior hardware to be better animated and more appealing. It just strikes me as a terrible launch demonstration of what the NEOGEO could really do. But I also feel like quite a few arcade games from many developers squandered the raw power their platforms had.
@@d_valroth I get what you're saying but Ninja Combat is absolutely using the tech that made the Neo Geo AES/MVS superior to every 16-bit console. There are plenty of examples in this game that show off the Neo Geo touch and again launch title from 1990. Start the video up again and look at the characters on screen. You will notice little details that show off some incredible animations that flat didn't happen anywhere else in 1990. Joe's blowing hair and the folding cloth on his Gi look phenomenal even now. There is a level that features...like a sand pit with ripples of sand rushing towards the screen that had us all asking "how did they do it?!" in 1990. There is a boss battle where you're fighting a Kabuki in this game (second to last level). If you watch his animations you will see something neither the Genesis nor Snes could pull off in 1995. What I'm saying is...yes, the game isn't great. However, it really brought something to the table in 1990 that we gamers had never seen before. Case in point- It was the 18th highest grossing arcade game in the US in 1990 and that's really saying something. I was a gamer back then with a Sega Genesis and I was blown away by it, oh yes I was. Addendum- You should re-watch this video and count how many times sprites scale in and out of the background. I would also suggest paying attention to the ground periodically for some pretty damn neat effects that weren't happening anywhere else.
@@Sinn0100 I did note the sprite scaling as the game's highlight, but also that the acompanying animations are pretty lackluster. The hardware is there, but I just feel that the graphics and animation drop the ball pretty hard. The system can do so much better. Also I realized that I wasn't clear enough in my earlier post; my comparison to Final Fight was to the CPS-1 arcade game, (which was a late 1989 release I believe) which would have been competing for quarters with this one. I just find Cody, Haggar, Guy, and the Mad Gear gang both better rendered and better animated, even if they can only pretend to enter from the background using some palette tricks. I think I lack the perspective of someone who was there when this was cutting edge. I did not know many of the early NEOGEO titles, and the ones I was familiar with were the later animation showcases like Samurai Showdown, King of Fighters, and Metal Slug.
My mom and I used to play this game together. Time is gone in the wind man

Ninja Combat is in no way a classic Neo Geo title, but its hyper-campy presentation goes a long way in making it an entertaining game to play through.
