I remember when I was about 8 or 9, my friend came over to my house with his PlayStation. He brought a few game with him: Tomb Raider 1, Ridge Racer and D. I was amazed with them all, but the thing that stood out the most was how much D scared the shit out of me. It's crazy, because I'm 37 now and D has that cheesyvoice acting! It's unreal. I kind of love the cheesiness of it all though.
    Great video!

Lately I've wanted FMV games to make a comeback, because with the tech now I imagined that there's immense potential that just hasn't been tapped into yet. After playing Inscryption especially my imagination started going wild with a high quality psychological horror movie with some game elements. I think the problem is that the money has to meet the people with the mind and will. I imagine some day it will happen; out of nowhere an actually EXCELLENT FMV games will drop and be the talk of the town and go down in history, and we might even get a (probably short lived) revival. That would be cool.

I'll always appreciate how much of their era they are lol. Fun time capsules.

I would say that the original resident evil game had FMV elements to it, especially the opening live action scenes

That Shock Wave intro fmv is still very impressive and Wing Commander 3, just wow, fmv classic. I've first played them on 3DO back in the 90's, 3DO also has an exclusive Shock Wave 2 game which has improved a lot from the original, a hidden gem that no one played I'd say. Great vid. I'm going to watch all the others, love the channel

I didn't know about Shockwave 2. I could quite fancy a 3DO collection actually. If only I had some money! Thanks for watching.

@@retromuel 3DO and the game is not too expensive now, even though I don't have physical copies. You can always play it through emulation, which is flawless by now

When AAA games use 3D modelised actors and mocap it just has less soul than FMVs...

Great video! Is a bit wild to not mention Myst even in passing here, but I do understand your videos are more bent towards your personal experience rather than comprehensive genre overviews.

Thanks very much and thanks for watching. Yeah that's a fair point although I don't really think Myst can be called an FMV game really. I always kind of thought it was in its own little genre. There's barely any true FMV in it compared to the other games here. It only shipped on a single cd and the vast majority of it is still images. But yeah it warrants a mention at least.

@@retromuel true, it is a bit like bringing up the first release of Resident Evil despite it only having live action fmv in the opening. Still, I figure its at least somewhat relevant since you happened to also bring up Phantasmagoria and similar PC point-and-clicks.
Another interesting one in that category is The 7th Guest. Fairly early example of the subgenre, has a rerelease on Steam that might be worth looking into

@@amphituber382 Yeah that was a big one admittedly, at least in the US I gather. There are tonnes really. I mean Rebel Assault was big one over here. A lot of folks bought cd rom drives to play that one.

I think Gabriel knight 2 the beast within was the greatest of all time when it comes to FMV games

I think FMV games were really misunderstood, and misreceived really, if I can make up a word. If you're expecting it to be like a video game where you control a sprite on-screen, then obviously you're going to be disappointed. That has nothing to do with the way in which they were trying to be engaging.

I don't think at all that there's been a fall in these games I like them besides except for Sega CD your not going to get better graphics and a more realistic game than FMV game's like PS4 Erica is a great game pretty fun to play

Yes that's why the video's called "The Fall and Rise of FMV games." Not "The Rise and Fall of FMV games."
