    I have two Brooks B17 leather saddles. My magenta 6MR came with the copper version saddle. Both saddles were comfortable right from the start. Leather is renewable. Plastic is not renewable. I respect your vegan views. Oh, I'm the Canadian version of Barefoot Mick. My nickname is Mick. I known for going barefoot mostly in the wilderness. Cold water is the best after a long ride. Water helps reduce inflammation from extended effort. I like the way you shoot directly from the lips. You are direct, honest and not a phoney man.

      Mick Lessard yes, I respect everyone choosing their own path in life. We all have views and I respect other views(kind of a live and let live philosophy). Yeah, that cold water felt great. I almost did not want to come out. The bottoms for the lake had hard jagged rocks which hurt my bare feet.😬

    Saddles, yeah, that is a tricky one. I've had two Brooks saddles--after broken in, 500 miles minimum--they were/are fairly comfortable. The most comfortable saddle I'm using right now is the 'Lata'. Get this--it is bought on the Walmart site. About $23. I'm not kidding, it is thee-most-comfortable-saddle ever used. It's heavy but sporty looking. I have two but I'm buying more.

    Good to see you again Brian, hello from England! I'm a C17 convert, I have them on both of my Bromptons. The shape of the C17 suits me better than the C13, 15 or 19. I got the first one almost 3 years, they do wear but the only time I've frayed the edge is when the bike has fallen over. I trim off the frayed strands with a sharp blade holding it taught with a pair of tweezers and it's fine again. For a time I noticed that I was getting a bit of wear on my shorts near the top of the inside of the leg. I figured out it was the pentaclip bolt rubbing so I remounted the saddle rails on the lower rail mounts of the pentaclip - it means most of the pentaclip including the bolt is hidden up inside the saddle. To adjust the hex bolt I have to flex one of the saddle wings up a little but there's no more wear on my shorts.

    As a Dane I sought a new saddle for my Brompton, and found some notes about a lack of quality from the latest Brooks saddles, so I extended my search to other brands also. And in an Internet sport shop in Spain (Which is still inside the E.U. and with no, absurd obstacles for trading internally), I found a new Selle San Marco Royal (Italian Brand Selle actually now also owns Brooks!) for seemingly reasonable discount, which I ordered. I used Selle Italia on my racing bikes, when somewhat younger.

    Sounds a great idea to be able to test-ride a saddle. Indeed, anatomy rules and what suits one may not suit others.
    Fine adjustments to position and angle can make noticeable differences and as you say, where you sit on the saddle. I find the angle determines the natural sitting place quite a bit. Once I have the “perfect” position, I take key measurements, I also use the “surface level” app on my phone to tell me an angle I have set - used in what ever way is recordable and repeatable, the actual angle of anything is immaterial :-)
    Cold water - a great soother for rejuvenating tired muscles and feet, used this trick a lot when mountain hiking.
    I admire your appetite for long rides - 45 miles is my early morning maximum on my Brompton so far, but I do have aspirations for more - making it a full day out rather that a before breakfast session😃

    I have both the B17 leather and the C15 carved
    The leather saddle takes about 1000 hours to get comfortable where as the Cambium is comfy straight out of the Box.
    The Cambium saddle is made in Italy under licence, not in the UK.

    • @adrianlw2750
      @adrianlw2750 4 года назад

      Hi velosapien - I have 4 leather B17’s on 4 bikes, two are standard, 2 are narrow. My experience has been that whilst very hard “out of the box”, they have nevertheless been comfortable right away for my anatomy. Comfort then improves even further through use though. The B17 standard on my Brompton now has 3,000 miles under the bum (around 250 hours) and comfort is something I can take for granted. There are occasional off days, but I put that down to other factors independent of the saddle itself as I make no changes to the bike setup itself and my ride types and distances are consistent.
      I have not tried a Cambium, but it sounds a great choice for proper all-weather/conditions riding - leather has some drawbacks in that area, preferring not to get wet.
      My last B17 was shipped to me direct from Italy - I had not realised Brooks were made there until that, as I had simply bought from Evans Cycles in UK and assumed (as such an old brand) that they were made in UK.

    Haha (Great minds think alike) My Cambium for my Brompton arrives any minute and my chosen bike shop (Southdowns Bikes has a 30 day return policy if you find a saddle uncomfortable, that is customer service which gets my loyalty.) - I went for the carved all-weather (black rubber) version with the hole in the middle. Originally for Ladies but now finding favour with men. The science behind the Brooks saddle is interesting. They say that a soft Gel (or just soft) saddle touches in too many places and so the contact area is too much, hence discomfort. Their saddles are like hammocks. So many people swear by them (and never about them) I've decided to run with the pack this time. Stay safe Brian - it's still a bit crazy out there. Vegan respect Brian..Greetings from S.Coast UK.

    Hi Brian, before making the final decision with Brooks saddles, I would recommend you to test Brooks C17 curved version if possible. This saddle is heavy, expensive but really good-looking, comfortable and reasonably soft.
    Also, the Brooks saddle has no hand support on its "nose" area (like Brompton one has), so you need to be more carefull in order not to tear down the cambium in that region. For that reason I have purchased the inexpensive bike carry handle from RockBros, it really helps when you need to carry unfolded bike with the bag installed.

    Hello Brian! Very good buy! Personally, on Sunday I did a 160Km ride to a countryside of the Province of Buenos Aires, with the stock Brompton saddle in its wide version, (which is the one that best suits my anatomy). Honestly, I was afraid of him, of the efficiency of the stock pedals, and of having chosen an S model (despite being very used to that position), and I'll tell you, it was all wonderful! I don't see a need to make any of the three changes. I was comfortable all day, maintaining an efficient but relaxed march of about 22Km / H, and on the return, zero pain or discomfort. 100% Happiness! : D (By the way, something that I did change before the trip, were the grips, for some Ergon GP1 Large)

I find the wide Brompton saddle more comfortable than the standard (even though they appear almost identical). For trips over 20 miles I prefer my road bike, a custom built "Dutch" style. The upright riding position means the saddle is critical. I bought a Brooks C19 cut-away ("carved") Cambium and found it way too hard. I added a Red Shift suspension seat post and the combination is just perfect. I also have a wide sprung Brooks leather saddle (B67) which is nearly as comfortable. I find leather is high maintenance though (treatment and adjustment) and the springs creak a little which annoys me. Cambium may not be "renewable" like leather but it is no worse than the tyres we all use. I believe the body material is vulcanised rubber. After 18 months use the Brooks Cambium gets a big up-vote from me.

      Yes, I know people rave on the leather, but even if I were not vegan, which I am, I find the leather too much up keep for my liking. Thanks for the comment.

    love the drone footage mate! though, I've got no idea how you control it! i also suffer a bit with the standard brompton saddle after around 20 miles but that was just in my normal shorts, at the age of 50 I've recently started using padded cycle shorts for the first time and boy oh boy! what a difference in regard to being pain free and increasing the amount of mileage I can do! if you dont wear padded shorts it might be worth you giving them a go first as they can be quite cheap and there are many options , personally I've found the gel ones better for comfort and heat dissipation PS I'd absolutely kill to have your mega smooth cycle paths! if you cycled where I live you'd really know what butt pain is:)

    • @ibikeunfolded
      @ibikeunfolded  4 года назад

      LOL, not every place around here is so smooth. Most of the recreational cycling paths are nice. Riding in the city......Well that’s something entirely different. I do have some padded bike shorts. I find that when I wear them for long periods they start to chaff as well. They are fine when I am riding, but when I get off the bike and walk around in them, that’s when they start to rub.

    Hey Brian nice to see you. Been getting over whelmed with the crap YT gives me. So for about ten yrs i drove SAG for a 2 day ride. A lot of the old timers who had newer bikes. Had their 30yr old Brooks saddles on light bikes. They last forever.

    Hey another good video! Two questions- 1) do you ride with padded shorts (I do but would like to get where I could live without them and not have pain and 2) was that Chatfield Resevoir ? I used to live just north of there.

    • @ibikeunfolded
      @ibikeunfolded  4 года назад

      I have padded under shorts. They are like underwear that are padded. I do not fancy the tight fitting bicycle shorts that leave it all hanging out. Not very flattering on me. The padded undershorts however, they give the same padding and you wear them under your regular shorts. Kind of the best of both worlds. I ride mostly without them. As soon as I discover a way to live a pain free bike life I will definitely share. Yes that is chatfield reservoir. I rode from down town denver.

    Try " Fabric " saddles I have one,there's many models in the range,and they wont break the bank,I have seen in another video,that the cambium c15 does eventually sink in the middle to the point of you feeling the rails,I'm 6'.2" 98 kg,so I'm sure I would end up fraying that saddle,or stretching it to the point where I'm sitting into it,and I personally don't like the feeling of sitting into a saddle.

    • @ibikeunfolded
      @ibikeunfolded  4 года назад +1

      That’s what I am worried about as well. I am 6’1” and carry a lot of weight on my back. I have seen the fabric saddles, but never really heard anything about them. Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

    I do 50/80 mile rides monthly with a stock Brompton saddle I just wear cycling shorts under whatever I’m wearing on the ride! Cycling shorts and a helmet is the best investment you can make as a cyclist in my opinion.

    Have Cambiun c17s on every bike. With the investment I’d say. I have the carved version on two bikes. All of them are good out of the box.
    The first cotton models did fray and the colour bleached. The latest all weather models are much more resilient and look like new after 2 years. No wear to shorts from any of them.

    I am a vegan too, and I had a Brooks Cambium. Maybe I did something wrong, but it failed on me in a year. And when it was in use it did ate a lot of my pants. So your fear is right. But I heard they changed the design a little, but I am not sure.

    • @ibikeunfolded
      @ibikeunfolded  4 года назад +1

      Well, I was told they changed the design, but I am not fully sure if thats true or not. I have not done a long term review to see if those issues I was concerned about happen over a period of time. I just thought the saddle was comfortable in my initial impressions video.

      I had mixed experiences with the C17. The C17 all-weather has been really good to me. I've installed one on my touring Brompton and cargobike. However, the original, lighter weight C17 (alloy back plate and hollow rails) is much firmer. I can spend the whole day sitting on a C17 all-weather, but 100km on the original one is really pushing it for me.

    I think that after we die, worms will eat us. So I eat meat without remorse and enjoy riding the B67 leather saddle. Leather saddles require gentle care and are not suitable for very cold and very rainy weather, your saddle is more versatile and will last a long time. Nice buy.

    • @ibikeunfolded
      @ibikeunfolded  4 года назад

      Yeah, even if I were not vegan, I wouldnt go with the leather saddle.....Too much up keep. I would forget to take care of it and it would not do so well in all weather conditions.
