What a great tool to show! I’ve often gone into my wife’s sewing box to use her cloth measuring tape to get accurate circumferences on projects. One of these wheels could be very useful - maybe with a rubber edge tho. Very interesting Toolscouter! Thanks for showing us!
Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate you coming by for a visit and I’m always glad to share these old tools with you. Always great to see you in the comments and I hope you have a great weekend.
I thought it was a scale of some sort at first, but I'm not too far off. Glad to know it was a measuring device. Very cool tool and have a great weekend!
😁😁😁 that’s right! I don’t think you fell for it, but it was fun to tease him about it. Always great to have you stop by and visit me here in the shop. Hope you have a great weekend.
I think it looks nice too. And you’re right about the heat. The heat makes them expand and then when they’re cooled, they tighten up around the wood wheel.
Survey workers and DOT highway workers use a larger version to measure distances between storm drains etc. known circumference makes it easier to mark the wheel with graduations and a counter keeps track of the number of revolutions.
You’re absolutely right. I’ve seen the music and I think I’ve even seen them in some of the big box stores. Thanks so much for stopping by the shop for a visit and sharing your thoughts with us. Hope you had a great week.
@@toolscouter When at a trucking company in the 80's, I used a mini wheel to measure routes on maps, converting the scale on the map to miles. Seems you could use this for longer distances, if that notch was easier to see, and it is not limited to wheel sizes.
I’ll bet you’re right. I thought about taking a file and cleaning out that notch and then possibly putting some silver paint in it. If I were ever to use it regularly, I probably would. Thanks so much for sharing here in the comments. Always great to hear from people who have experience with tools like these. Have a good one.
@@toolscouter Have you ever used Google Lens in your work? It's amazing the things that it can identify. I bought some property that is almost like a botanical garden. I have used Google Lens to identify some of the plants that I have here.
Measuring cloth, like sails is my guess. So, wagon wheels. I am surprised. I would think a length of light rope would be better because of this tool's potential for slippage and loss of contact with the wagon wheel.
A traveler is used to measure the circumference on the inside of the steel tire that is heat shrunk onto a wagon wheel. There's no other convenient way to do that. Dave Engle has a channel on YT, Engles Coach Shop, where he uses one on a regular basis. Dave is known for building replicas of the borax wagons pulled by a team of 20 mules. Check it out!
That is a very good idea. I think this measuring tool can also be used on the inside of an oddly shaped or round object. A rope wouldn’t stay in place and I don’t think it slips as badly if it comes in contact with Wood. The way I did it on metal was more precarious. Thanks so much for sharing and come back again soon. Hope you have a great weekend.
Thank you. I have watched a show for some time and really enjoy it. Thank you so much for stopping by the shop and sharing with the soul. Have a great weekend.
You got it. It’s amazing how they do that. Heating up the steel band so they expand and then cool them quickly and they shrink right around tight. Thanks so much for sharing, come back again soon and have a great weekend.
😄😄😄 Oh, I love it! Thanks so much for stopping by and making me laugh out loud. Good luck on figuring it out and procrastinating the leaves. Have a great weekend.
You’re right. I’ve also seen road crews. Use a very large one with a clicker on it. You can measure off long distances. Thanks for commenting and have a good one.
It's a traveler. Used for measuring round things, like wheels and tires.
You’re even using the proper name. Thanks so much for stopping by and hope you have a great weekend.
Used extensively by wheel rights when measuring for the length of steel needed to make the “tire” for wagon wheels.
That's a wicked cool tool from my home state of Massachusetts.
It is a very cool tool. Thanks so much for your visit and come by again soon. Have a great week.

Nice to see it on the wall.
Fun fact! Wagon wheel tires are heat shrunk onto the wheels....

Very interesting, another good show. 😃

A wheelwright's traveler used to measure wagon wheels rims to fit steel tires
You are absolutely right. You even use the correct terminologies. Thanks for coming by the shop for a visit and hope you have a great weekend.
Very Cool Tool

Looks like it is for measuring distances, as each rotation would mark it.

Did not know. I thought it was for working cloth or leather.
Always great to see you in the comments. Thank you very much for your visit and hope you have a great weekend.
It's a wheelwright's measuring wheel.
I identified it on Google Lens and it stated that it was made by Wiley and Russell.

i new what it was called. saw it used by a wheelwright video!!!
Like I said, you guys are getting harder to stump. Great to see you in the comments. Come by again soon and have a great weekend.
Oh, I know what it is. Just posted a video on one....
Actually used one. Several museums have displays that have my fingerprints on them.
You most definitely would know what it is. I just watched your video a day or two ago. Thanks so much for stopping by and have a great weekend.
I know they used this to make the steel band to heat and shrink on mill stones to get the right diameter!
You got it. It’s amazing how they do that. Heating up the steel band so they expand and then cool them quickly and they shrink right around tight. Thanks so much for sharing, come back again soon and have a great weekend.

A measuring wheel
You got it Scott. Thanks so much for stopping by and have yourself a great weekend.
Measuring felloes.
You got it. Thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you have a great weekend.
Wow, you seem to find the odd stuff. My thought is that it is some kind of measurin̈g wheel. But what to measure
You’re absolutely right it’s for measuring the circumference of things. Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend.
Traveler
You even use the correct terminology. Thanks so much for your visit. Come again soon and have a great day.
What is it used for?
I used it to avoid going outside to rake leaves. In fact, I'm willing to stay inside until I figure it out.
😄😄😄 Oh, I love it! Thanks so much for stopping by and making me laugh out loud. Good luck on figuring it out and procrastinating the leaves. Have a great weekend.

Obviously a measuring wheel.

There is a similar wheel used on sports fields to mark out the lines, measure, etc...
You’re right. I’ve also seen road crews. Use a very large one with a clicker on it. You can measure off long distances. Thanks for commenting and have a good one.
