Limited Resources 735 - Murders at Karlov Manor Set Review: Commons and Uncommons

  • This week on Limited Resources Marshall and Luis go over every single common and uncommon in Murders at Karlov Manor! Morph is back sort of! It looks like a 2/2 for 3 doesn’t cut it any more so they upgraded morphs a little bit, but the core of the mechanic is still here, and morph sets have been some of the best ones we’ve seen, will this set live up?

    I'm 1/3rd if the way so it might have been mentioned later, but a very nice thing about the split cards is that they can easily pay for collective evidence so there is a lot of synergy in this set with the mechanic.

    • @Mordalon
      @Mordalon 6 месяцев назад

      @Tamiss the cards are fine. As they pointed out, the main issue is enabling it. It’s the same hurdle as why Delve was bad in Khans limited.

    • @Controlqueen31
      @Controlqueen31 5 месяцев назад

      @@Mordalon because Collect Evidence 4 or 6 is a thing you are going to do only once in the game (except if you play a lot of two sided cards), maybe two times if the games reaches late turns, and the pay offs are... Not great.
      I think it is the worst mechanic, except for the Green "tutor", the dragon and Izoni. Those are good/bomb cards, but the commons and uncommons are going to be "1/3 for two mana. Collect Evidence 6 to put two +1/+1 counters on this"

    • @scarrboros
      @scarrboros 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@Controlqueen31 I played a bit yesterday, collect evidence is not super bad, you can't overload your deck with it, but you can definitely get extra value. The bite spell that was cheaper for evidence was amazing, big tempo swing on the cheap. I don't think it's gonna be a "good" mechanic, but most cards with it are gonna be quite effective if you can pay it on them.

    • @Mordalon
      @Mordalon 5 месяцев назад

      @@Controlqueen31 4-6 MV is like 2-3 nonlands in your graveyard on average, and that's just with the 2-3 drops not the 6 drops that pay for it entirely on their own. We've had Escape and Delve which regularly eat through just as much if not more of that multiple times a game.

    I think there's more collect evidence enablers than you guys think at early mana. The split cards all can be 2-3 mana for collect evidence 8-10 in 1 card. The land cycling common gives you 6 with just 1 card. I don't think you can collect evidence a ton, but the higher numbers are easier to enable than indicated here IMO.

    • @andrewjennings236
      @andrewjennings236 6 месяцев назад +13

      I doubt it unfortunately. Suspect as a mechanic skews things extremely aggressively and clues not requiring to be sacrificed means it being a slower mechanic doesn’t counteract this.
      Additionally 3/5 colors have good 1 drops at common. Those being Thraben (novice) inspector, snarling gorehound, and rubblebelt maverick. This is in addition to the plenty of good 2 drops every color has.
      Finally, disguise hurts removal by making it so using removal against 1-3 drop creatures will often net in a mana-loss. That means that just like in “Lost Caverns” it will likely be better to pick cheap, efficient creatures over removal.
      I want to wrong, but having just played plenty of “Khan’s” flashback drafts and finding the format faster than I remember, I just can’t see this format as being slow.

    On Expose the Culprit, your best upside play is: in response to removal targeting a “morph”, and after op pays, you turn face up get a trigger. Then shuffle 2 or more creatures with unmorph triggers.
    Basically a red ephemerate

    • @fernandobanda5734
      @fernandobanda5734 5 месяцев назад

      You can't do that. You need to select all the targets at the same time, so you can't target a currently face-down creature with the second mode even if you plan to turn it face-up with the first.
      Edit: Nevermind, the second mode doesn't target

    • @tezzeret2000
      @tezzeret2000 5 месяцев назад +1

      That's a really cool use! Not to mention that you can get additional flip procs on your creatures with it, and often at a discounted cost because the flip-up cost is often a lot more expensive. Imagine casting this on something nasty like Greenbelt Radical, getting the proc for free, and then discounting the 2nd cost to 4 instead of 7; it seems like a build-around C+ to me.
      Does anyone with rules expertise know if the ephemerate use still works with only one target?

    One of the things I haven't seen mentioned is that this set follows the same rule for Khan's is that when you send your disguise creature into their disguise creature, you know that they'll at least trade/bounce up until they have 5 mana. Only after they have 6 open mana should you be worried about their creature just straight up eating yours

    3:17:55 Cloak works like Manifest with ward 2, if a cloaked card is a creature then it can be turned face up for its mana cost but if that card has a disguise cost you can choose to use that instead so you could always use the cheaper cost, I don't know if you could use a morph cost to turned face it up from this state as well as well but I assume so. Expose the culprit can also save your creatures from targeted removal while also triggering a turn face up ability be cause of the odd way that it is worded, still pretty bad though

    Expose the culprit allows you to get your face up trigger from a disguise or make your disguise creature trade well in combat. If the creature you turned face up survives, you can then turn it face down again. The thing is you get to shuffle it with any other face down creatures so that opponent doesn’t know which creature is which again. And some disguise creatures have a lower mana value than their disguise cost so you’re getting a discount on some of them later. It seems not great to me but I think it’s better than straight up F.

    I see Case of the Gordon's kiss as a one-sided board wipe for the stall game where you can be on the back foot. Attack with two, and they block with two, say 2 trade, and we lose ours to theirs. This finishes theirs, and we are left with a 4/4 LL DT.
    A board state of a couple morphed creeps and another dude or two. Seems easy enough to force the action on a stalled board state.
    I 'suspect' it's better than it looks.

    question about Caught Red-Handed: considering the "can't be countered" and "instant" parts of the card; what happens if you target a disguised creature that the opponent pays to flip up? do you get to control the effects of the flip up? just really weirded out by this card, just like you guys, and trying to find a play pattern for it.

    • @sephirothsadvent
      @sephirothsadvent 5 месяцев назад +1

      No you don't because you cannot respond to a creature being turned face up. If the creature has an ability when turned face up it will go on the stack and you can respond to that but your opponent will get the ability.

    • @alexmajor2366
      @alexmajor2366 5 месяцев назад

      You can't prevent someone from turning a creature face up when they have priority if they can pay the costs. On the other hand they won't have priority during the resolution of the spell. So if you CRH targeting something and they turn it face up with CRH still on the stack, they'll get to put the face up trigger on the stack.
      I think that if you get the CRH off, then you can look at it, and you have leeway to undisguise it and you'll control the triggered ability if so

    for Presumed dead, cant you cast it on a face down card and have it come back face up?

  • @janusztarczykowski9003
    @janusztarczykowski9003 5 месяцев назад

    For the card that cloaks - it allows you to turn any creature face up, even if it doesnt have disguise. So creatures with disguise get 2 different abilites that allow them to turn, you can choose the one with better cost

    Rubblebelt maverick is insane not sure why Luis didn't like the card. Surveil 2 on a 1/1 is decent but allowing you to get a counter for only 1 mana sounds really good.

    I just can't wrap my head around why the "disguise" cost relate to flipping the card up. You would expect it to be something like "undisguise" or "disclose"; it's just such an unintuitive name. My brain wants to pay the disguise cost to play it down as a 2/2.

    Jetsam seems pretty great for any multiplayer format. 6 mana cast 3 spells of your choice(ish). Most of the time this effect is either "cast an instant or sorcery" or "put a creature", but since this is a cast it can get any of those cast trigger creatures.

    For Expose the Culprit, if opponent targets one of your face up creatures can you redisguise to give the ward and potentially fizzle the spell? Or is it too late to grant ward if spell is on stack ?

    • @zachadams8812
      @zachadams8812 5 месяцев назад

      Actually, not sure how a spell on the stack would work, how will opponent know what was targeted if shuffling multiple cards

    • @Mordalon
      @Mordalon 5 месяцев назад

      The second mode of Expose exiles the creatures, that alone would be enough to make the spell targeting it fizzle. They aren't shuffled on the battlefield, they are shuffled in exile then cloaked. Also, They rarely do cards that grant Ward at instant speed because it's unintuitive, Ward is a triggered ability that triggers when the creature becomes targeted, a creature that is already targeted and THEN gets Ward won't be protected because the event that causes the trigger already happened.

    • @Mordalon

      It's like how cards that put creatures directly into play attacking don't trigger "when creatures attack" triggered abilities.

    You mentioned that Flotsam's mill will help with Collect Evidence, but didn't mention how good the card itself is for that too. An underrated value for ALL the split hybrid cards is that they are very good evidence to collect. You can get them into the graveyard for 1-3 mana, then collect 7-9 mana worth of evidence.

    Expose the Culprit is supposed to be used to both flip a face down card face up to gets its "when faced up" effect, and it can be used to re-disguise your disguise creatures so you can benefit from their "when faced up" effects again.

    I like how the morphs in this set can go in multiple decks without needing fixing lands so we shouldn't see the 5 color morphs deck like in khans but will still see heavy disguise decks.

    Auras, Equipment, and Combat Tricks seem like they'll be much better in a Morph set, especially since new morph has ward 2. I think many of these cards will be a bit better than they have historically been.

  • @scarrboros
    @scarrboros 5 месяцев назад

    Disguise has the added side effect of bringing in a lot of ward creatures, so I think auras might be a bit better than usual, also combat tricks might also be better than usual because it's harder to be blown out and you don't have to pay for ward.
    Also calling it now, think granite witness is gonna be one of the top 5 commons.

    Have a feeling this is going to be another jeskai aggro format, with azorious being the strongest. hopefully I'm wrong. Green decks will be morphing generic 2/2s on turn 3 (thanks to ward being negated so much of the time). Meanwhile, you're slamming detectives on curve and smashing. Private eye is basically a glorious anthem in blue white. Attached to a creature that also makes your creatures unblockable. Card looks absolutely insane in that archetype. There are detectives everywhere. The white one and two drops look so strong for aggressive strategies. If true, Cheap removal will be key to combat it. Thankfully this format has efficient removal. I really hope this set isn't too fast because five color nonsense seems to be pretty doable in this set. Decent amount of fixing and ramp with morph helping you play cards that may otherwise be uncastable. Excited to try it.
