The same thing happened when I saw it. I've heard the term "show stopper" but this is the first time I've ACTUALLY seen the show stop. And then, in act two it happened AGAIN at the end of "Make An Omelette". After the show I asked the conductor about it and he said it happens every night.
I love the reference to Nothing Like A Dame on the line "the chorus boys are kinda gay" because in South Pacific that's basically a "let's convince each other we're REALLY heterosexual" song among the chorus boys.
“It's called a dance break! Apparently this happens in musicals as well! People on stage just burst into spontaneous dance” “Why? Does it advance the plot?” “No!” “Advance character?” “Not necessarily!” “Then why do it?” “Because it's entertaining!” And that’s Newsies in a nutshell
But I have to say. I love the composers for solely being so cultures in musical theatre, not only for writing this song, (which you have to know a lot to write and compose), but also for having it be so influenced by tap composer obviously understands how to write a song in musical theatre, but catchy and or snazzy riffs, and for making little jokes about how it is hard to rhyme things. The composer wrote a musical about people trying to write Shakespeare's Hamlet. Not to mention that one of those characters was directly written by William Shakespeare himself. They wrote about characters writing musicals, and wrote all of those done within the play. You definitely have to be so theatrically cultured to write this show, and I really respect the playwrights and composers for doing that.
Bruh when I saw Something Rotten in Buffalo after this number the crowd went WILD! I was awestruck and astonished at how spectacular it was and reminds me why I love theatre EVERY time I listen to this song I think of that moment and it warms my 💓 so much!!!
I love how they reference so many shows, and if you notice them it gives you an even bigger "AH HA!" moment, but that Les Miserables throat punch, just... Classic.
This might be far-fetched, but I think 3:16-3:21 is their little nod to Phantom...the tune he sings "I believe it's pronounced 'mis-er-ahhh-bluh' " is the exact same as Carlotta singing "would you not rather have your precious little INNNgenue??" AMIRIGHT??? :)
Yeah! I sang Seasons of Love at a Summer Camp, and I was listening to this today and I had to pause it and rewind a few times because I recognized the tune.
yeah, but Oedipus Rex is the greek tragedy known for King Oedipus marrying, and having intercourse with her son. So yes it was a refrence to oedipus rex
For YEARS I have had bits of this song in my head, but nobody else could help me remember what this song was or from. I was just browsing through memes, and I landed on this wonderful song that will finally allow the relaxation of my mind.
No talking at all in LesMiz? Well, yes... except for the fact that "General LaMarque is dead." That's spoken dialogue in LesMiz. EDIT: 215 LIKES?!?!?! Wow...
i'm rehearsing for a production of this show right now and there's a great cabaret reference in the extended tap break music that's not on the cast recording
This performance is even more captivating live. I saw it last night and I’m still shook. The musical references are so unreal and I’m pretty sure all of the audience recognized all of them.
This whole show is just a straight up love letter to theatre fans. I saw this with my best friend who wasn’t into theatre. While she was just tapping her foot along wit the beat, I was freaking LOSING IT
Thank you so much, the Evita part was killing me. I knew it was something Latin, but I couldn't put it to a specific show. It took me a few times through to notice the A Chorus Line Hits at the very end.

This song just makes me happy inside! I listen to so many of the musicals mention in this song. Some of my favorites: Cats, Les Mis, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rent, Annie (I am in this one for my theatre. I screamed. I play Pepper) Wicked, Something Rotten (See what I did there?) Music Man (my best friend played Mariam for her theatre) Sweeny Todd, A Chorus Line, Chicago. Oh my gosh, I was about to put one that wasn't listed that wasn't listed. Was Hairspray in there?Nothing's a great as a musical! A musical! I often quote this song in Choir, and, people give me a weird look. Like, !y friend, and, I are singing a song from Phantom Of The Opera, and, someone asks what we're singing. Friend: Oh it's a song from The Phantom Of The Opera person: The Phantom of the Opera? Me: It's a musical! A musical! *starts singing this song* 3:13: I was singing the actual Les Mis lines. Dang it!
Right after the "Hello Dolly" There is a quick reference to Cats "Memory." After Guys and Dolls there's a reference to Sweet Charity, I think the song is part of the overture. I read somewhere that there's a single measure of reference to Sunday in the Park with George from the song 'Putting it Together' right before Annie. Right after Avenue Q there's an accidental reference to The Fantastiks
(Might not be in order): How To Succeed In A Business, On The Town, Oedipus (not a musical), Avenue Q (visual), The Fantasticks, Les Miserables, Phantom Of The Opera, Fascinating Rhythm, Gypsy, West Side Story, Oklahoma!, Music Man, Seussical, South Pacific, Chicago, Evita, Rent, Putting It Together, Jesus Christ Superstar, Annie, Guys and Dolls, A Chorus Line, Wicked, Sweet Charity, Hello Dolly!, A Chorus Line again, Newsies again, Cats, Sweeney Todd, A Chorus Line again
At about 2:30 to about 3:01 is a reference to "Aldolfo" from The Drowsy Chaperone. Also, the "No! They love it!" at 3:25 is a reference to The Producers.
I love how they define musicals as "song and dance and sweet romance" and "happy endings happening by happenstance" and then they choose Hamlet
Cloud Chaser well he asked what Shakespeare’s greatest play would be, and Nostradamus predicted Hamlet
@@ollierowan9767 well more like omelette
I love how he says you can easily see a musical anytime you want. Because that is the stupidest thing that I have ever heard.
Precisely.
Well, you can, but it sure as hell isn't going to be a Broadway musical.
Well bootlegs exists so hes not wrong
Back then, they were a lot more commonplace and cheaper.
Soul Bound that's the spirit!
"Happy endings happening"
*Falsettos flashbacks*

falsettoland is hands down one of my favorites and so peppy but every time mendel says "this story needs an ending" i get so sad lmao
Tobi Kuykendall les mis .... happy ending?
Oh god no that's traumatizing 😭

Oh ok I see it

The Les Mis reference killed me. I love this song.
'We'll do a musical' is a melody from Wicked
Thank God, I wasn't the only one who thought it sounded like "Wonderful".
HAHHAHAHA BRUH I DIDNT EVEN NOTICE THAT
Yeah, wonderful is referenced quite a lot throughout the number
I lost my shit at Les Miserables omfg
DUDE SAME
Me 2!! It was sooooo funny!!!
OMGGGG SO TRUEEEE
fucking same
I screamed at the top of my lungs at that part
This is like me telling my dad about musicals.
You forgot they referenced something rotten
Idk guys, but at like 0:30 sounds a lot like A Musical in Something Rotten...
I read this 2 times (??) before getting it...ha :)
Hannah Weaver It's obviously something else. I think it's Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer from Cats...
? I still don't understand it after reading it twice

I love the reference to Nothing Like A Dame on the line "the chorus boys are kinda gay" because in South Pacific that's basically a "let's convince each other we're REALLY heterosexual" song among the chorus boys.
There aint nothing like a dame!
I mean men are pretty similar....
NOPE! DAMES!!!
Is that a Hail Caesar reference? They do a kind of parody of South Pacific at one point in the movie.
all of the parts where it says "It's a musical" in the beginning sound like "Wonderful" from "Wicked"
I think so too
Yes! I saw the show today and thought that during this number. Was curious if anybody else felt the same.
I thought that too!
I was wondering if there would be a wicked reference!
Tyler Alexander omg it does
"Some musicals have no talking at all"
*cough* Cats *cough*
And Peggy ! and les mis
and the Pirates of Penzance 😂
And Peggy ! And Hamilton lmao
And Les Mis and Jesus Christ Superstar and most of Phantom of the Opera and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat....etc.

Gigi Grace how much was a ticket for both?
Gigi Grace in the live version, he comes back at the end of the song and sings a bit of "Corner of the Sky"
Peter Stamerra Oh goodness, I'd love to see that!

And all that jazz
The part about "chorus line-y" could potentially be a reference to A Chorus Line.
dude what? no way
And the end is all A Chorus Line
Well no I doubt it

Yeah, but the end is more overt
Theater kids are born from this
the "mom sleep with her son" is a reference to Edipus Rex (it may be mis spelled)

Good one-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the general toon for the chorus at the beginning is "Wonderful" from Wicked
What's there to correct
When they say "Whattya talk whattya talk." At around 4:50 that's from "Music Man".
Austin Cappetta yeah obviously😂
What song?
The opening Patter song.
I love how they reference so many shows, and if you notice them it gives you an even bigger "AH HA!" moment, but that Les Miserables throat punch, just...

There are a few measures of "Seventy-Six Trombones" from The Music Man after the "Tonight" from West Side Story reference
'It's a Musical for us'
is a reference to It's a hard knock life for us.
Andrew Tran wait, what?!! No!!!

4:48 sounds like "76 Trombones" from The Music Man if that's what that song is called, I can't remember
You missed the Oedipus Rex reference about "mother have sex with her son"
+Alishah Bahaman That's not just Oedipus, that's Greek mythology in general. All the greek gods have sex with each other

Newsies reference near the end! Its more choreography, but its right when he says doozy (which rhymes!). And maybe a unintentional On The Town one?
I saw this on Broadway! It was an absolutely wonderful show
Also when he say the part about "Fascinating Rhythm" that is a George and Ira Gershwin song by the same name
One that happens to be featured in "Nice Work (If You Can Get It)"
No talking at all in LesMiz? Well, yes... except for the fact that "General LaMarque is dead." That's spoken dialogue in LesMiz.

its technically not dialogue. its monologue. because dialogue is the interaction between characters.
Emily Roach wow. You are such a nerd
Emily Roach Ther are very few parts where they talk, but they are all single lines.
I swear whenever they sing "a musicaaal", I'm reminded of "Wonderful" from Wicked.
At around 4:48 it is also music man. You can hear the music play seventy six trombones
I just realized how similar this is to a show stoppin number from the guy who didn’t like musicals it’s pretty funny to see similarities

i'm rehearsing for a production of this show right now and there's a great cabaret reference in the extended tap break music that's not on the cast recording
1:22 there's a broadway show called On the Town
TheLoonyLovebad1 that’s what I was thinking
This performance is even more captivating live. I saw it last night and I’m still shook. The musical references are so unreal and I’m pretty sure all of the audience recognized all of them.
I also think that the "it's a Saturday night and you wanna go out" part is referenced from Brotherhood of Man from How to Succeed in Business.

They have "shall we dance tonight" in the Omelette song
Well shit, I think we found our anthem!
Best friend: THIS IS GREAT! .... Oh no it's catchy as fuck.
Me: Damn right it is!
For a theatre workshop I was at, we did the babied down version of this song. It's weird hearing the in-babied version after practicing it so much.
The les Mis made me cry from laughing!
Love this so much, and the fact that it ends with the best musical of them all, A CHORUS LINE
Was this guy the same guy in shrek the musical
Idk I can hear it in his voice
Artemis Silver yes
I think around 4:43 is an Oklahoma reference
+Macy White Absolutely.
Damn, I was gonna point that one out. Everyone definitely misses it.
Yeah I hear it and get ready to say... OOOK-LAHOMA
I hope I'm not the only one who thought, "Ooohs Aaahs." Was actually, "Who's Oz?"
Just from this song, the musical is now on my bucket list. XD

3:37 "Fascinating Rhythm" from "Nice Work (If You Can Get It)"
How could they leave Phantom out??
That's in a different song
Do you mean they refer to Phantom in another song in the musical?? If so, what song? Very curious! Thanks!
In Make an omlette/something rotten but it's a visual so I have no idea how you'd see it, sorry.
Oh, ok! That's so interesting! If I ever see the whole musical I'll definitely be looking for it. Thanks!:)

I just hear this today! So funny! I shared it with my friends who hate musicals. Genius!
thanks for your efforts (no small task). love this number!
This might be a long shot but "No kidding!" might be a reference to Brotherhood Of Man from How to Succeed in Business. Or it can be just me.
I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised.
It definitely sounds like it is.
it's hysterical
