    A Wisconsin man stands trial for allegedly murdering and dismembering his parents without remorse, and providing false information on their disappearances. Chandler Michael Halderson, 23, faces charges including first-degree intentional homicide. Remains from his father Bart Halderson, 50, and mother Krista Halderson, 53, were found days apart, authorities said.
    Defendant Halderson reported his parents missing July 7th, claiming they left their home in the Village of Windsor days before on the 1st. He told WISC-TV at the time that they were going to the village of White Lake, Wisconsin.
    “My last message I got from them, they were going to White Lake for the Fourth of July,” he told “There are some festivities that go around there. Better drink prices at the bars. Stuff like that.”
    He said that to his knowledge, they were then going to their cabin in Langlade County.
    “Along the way, they could’ve stopped many places,” he said. “I wouldn’t know all of them.”
    He was allegedly just feeding everyone lies.
    Bart’s torso was found in rural Dane County, while remains from Krista were found in Sauk County and property run by the Department of Natural Resources, according to court documents obtained by The Wisconsin State Journal.
    Their son had been searching Google for terms like “Body found Wisconsin,” “Woman’s body found in Wisconsin,” “Wisconsin dismembered body found,” and “Dead body found in Wisconsin,” authorities said. Investigators suggested Chandler Halderson used to a visit to property belonging to the partner of his girlfriend’s mother as cover to hide his father’s torso nearby. He had shot Bart Halderson at least once before dismembering him, officials said.
    According to investigators, Halderson said after his arrest that “you don’t know the whole story,” and that he “didn’t feel bad about what I did.”

    The irony is that if Chazzle hadn’t killed his parents but had killed someone else, his parents would’ve gotten him the best defense attorneys money could buy. He killed the only two people who unconditionally loved him. They were nice people. You can see it in the text exchanges. He’s heartless and evil and I’m glad he has NO ONE to save him.

      How the heck does one go from Eagle Scout to this? Clearly he wasn't so mentally ill that he couldn't stand trial... It is impossible to grasp how a "sane-ish" person can kill his parents, chop them up, and disperse their bodies. Why didn't he plea? It sounds like he didn't want a defense.

    This closing argument is an excellent example of what not to do when defending a murderer.
    -Don't lie during your closing argument
    -If the prosecution has a strong case, don't say it's a weak case
    -Don't misrepresent what 'a reasonable doubt' means
    -Don't insult the jury's intelligence
    -Don't insult the jury
    -Don't accuse the jury of crimes
    -Don't criticize the prosecution of not proving motive, then immediately remind the jury that the prosecution doesn't have to prove motive
    -Don't criticize the medical examiner for not know irrelevant facts about the bodies (the order of the wounds...seriously?)
    -Don't complain when the prosecution doesn't dehumanize the victims
    -If you want to dispute a fact in evidence, do it during the trial
    -If you want to make assumptions about why the client did something, call the accused as a witness

      Well said & exactly right. Don't swear too would be another. She was absolutely appalling & what a total cop-out tactic to wait until all is almost over, with no witnesses called whatsoever, to nitpick and downgrade such a big piece of who this waster was, a liar & a skinny runty one at that. How she could stand there and say that his lies had nothing to do with this & that "all kids lie"? Hmmm well first up he's twenty piggin three so not exactly a 'kid' I've never seen a defense like it. There are plenty of convicts who also had little chance at trial because of overwhelming evidence that at least had a defense who LOOKED like they were doing something. Unbelievable.

No one needs a lot of money but Chas wanted to live as though he had money. He wanted the nice car nice home. He wanted to have a reputation of a rich person who worked hard for his money. Maybe a full half million dollars was not what he was after but a stylish upkeep was something he was after and revenge for not being able to have that money coming in regularly. I think Chandler should have pled guilty and thrown himself at the mercy of the court. At least he would have had the chance to tell the truth for once in his life. I think he was terrified of his embarassing lies exposed and in all likelihood would have lost his girlfriend. Not an excuse but at least he would have had the opportunity to explain the unexplainable.
      He would have had the chance to apologize to his entire family, Cat and her family and everyone else that ever loved Bart and Krista. I still think he would have gotten a life sentence but at least he could have been left with a very small shread of dignity--maybe the possibility of parole when you admit your actions and are remorseful (?) I dunno. As it is, he will never have the chance for parole.
      Realistically, his lawyers must have known that he was full of BS. They should have gotten him to plead guilty. This was never a "who done it". His lawyers had ridiculous arguments but in fairness to them, they had nothing to work with. So much overwhelming forensic evidence on top of all the circumstantial evidence.

    • @AndyCutright
      @AndyCutright 2 года назад +2

      This is not anywhere near ineffective counsel. Cross examining every witness isn't going to help his case. Their job is to show the prosecution didn't do their job, they didn't prove he murdered them _beyond_ a reasonable doubt. The only path through this mess is to get him acquitted on the first degree murder. No way are they going to get an acquittal on the lesser charges. Their goal is get him acquitted of first degree homicide. Get that done, and he's facing a lot less jail time. That is the _best_ _case_ scenario for the defense team.
      This is an excellent defense given the situation.

    • @pwit4186
      @pwit4186 2 года назад +9

      Exactly.... most of her closing was about motive, which isn't necessary to prove...I sat here thinking, ok where is your actual defense? That's what they were left with though, because it is overwhelmingly obvious beyond a reasonable doubt what occured

    • @AndyCutright
      @AndyCutright 2 года назад +6

      Not motive, intent. That's a different standard. That's a necessary element of first degree. The defense goal is to get him acquitted of at least one or both first degree homicide charges. That's the best anyone could do in this case. They do that by pointing out there's no intention. Like she says they jury might not like it, but that's the law. If the prosecution can't prove intent, the jury should not convict on first degree intentional homicide. It's literally her last statement to the jury. Get those acquittals, and he's facing a lot less prison time.
      This is absolutely the only strategy available to the defense team.

    • @Ocrilat
      @Ocrilat 2 года назад +7

      @@pwit4186 Agreed. It's like they really think that 'reasonable doubt' means 'zero doubt'. Maybe the defense could have set up reasonable doubt (I doubt it, but maybe) if they did it either during cross examination or during their case. Maybe if they demonstrated a reasonable scenario where some other credible person stole his phone (as an example) and put the frame on him. Or some evidence or scenario where Chandler didn't do this. But they didn't. They didn't lay the groundwork. Suggesting the parent might have accidentally shot themselves in the back and they spontaneously became dismembered and scattered across Wisconsin is bizarre.
      The fact that the parent's home was basically under video surveillance 24/7, and that Bart and Krista enter the home but never leave it is pretty compelling to me. How does the defense explain it? They don't even try.
