      SportRx I did. They fell from 2 foot and landed on thick Carpet and the cheap lens shattered. Worst $170 I’ve spent.

    • @sportrxeyewear
      @sportrxeyewear  7 лет назад +1

      Dang! From two feet and on thick carpet, for their lens to shatter (like glass?) is some kind of anomaly! Definitely, reach out to Oakley; they will help you. I have never seen their lens material shatter. I would have thought it impossible, so the fact that they did should be proof enough that they will replace them immediately.

      SportRx that’s what I was told. I didn’t watch it happen but that is what I was told. It could have been smashed I guess but it didn’t look like it. It’s a few years old already

    The impact test is pretty accurate. I was using a weed eater and a rock the size of a quarter hit my lens on my flak 2.0 and it didn’t shatter. It simply left a small dent on my lens. Could of lost an eye or damaged it pretty bad.

      I've used my Flak Jacket XLJ's as "safety glasses" in a pinch. Wouldn't have done that with any other brand of "sunglasses"...

      I shot a 177 airgun pellet at a pair of $10 sunglasses. There was a small dent in the lens but that`s it. So your theory about shatter resistance only in expensive glasses is very wrong. Plexiglass is not very expensive.

    13 years ago when I was in high school, I bought a pair of 1st Gen Half Jackets because I thought they looked cool. I really didn't have much knowledge on Oakley at the time. Well, some time later they actually saved my eyesight. A friend of mine accidently discharged a paintball gun he had just bought and the round went straight towards my face. The Half Jackets deflected it onto the floor and instead of a hosptial visit, I ended up with a slight headache and a cool story to tell. It since made me a very strong believer in the effectiveness of Oakley Sunglasses.

    I can attest to this. I've had dirt, rocks and debris launched at my eyes. While wearing Oakley sunglasses, never had an injury. Sure, they are expensive, but I would rather pay for sunglasses than have to pay for eye surgery. I wear Holbrook and Radar EV frames. The polarized lenses are great, especially if you get prizm built in.

      You are 100% correct David! People will pay the money for the bike, shoes, helmet, but not protect their eyes. Take it from David, it's worth paying the extra buck especially for some PRIZM lenses.

      Luxottica may own a bit of sunglass companies but not a majority as far as what they're comparing it to I'm not sure it could be other than that accompanies like a d or or a Ray-Ban but it could also be known as out of companies like spy electric or Maui Jim so to say it's all the same either way is wrong because Oakley is a sport frame and the only one it would be comparable to is something like a Wiley X or an ESS so yes Oakley is a significant better frame or a lens material in those aspects and that's what they're comparing it to it has no difference whether it's the same company or not as far as that goes because Oakley is still a main owner of the way that they make them they won't let anyone Chang the lenses

    Then, for the price they need to include a Z87.1 certification. Even $2 safety glasses have it. Oakley isn't stamped (most) with Z87.1 so they can't be used as safety glasses in an OSHA environment.

    While I like Oakley sunglasses (I've lost 5 pairs and just bought an M2 XL), this is just a 14 minute, 40 second commercial which Sportrx decided to participate in. It seems a little questionable to have these "tests" conducted by an Oakley marketing rep at the Oakley lab. That's not a credible test of anything, other than Oakley's ability at marketing its own products. You should take a collection of Oakleys to an independent optics lab and have them tell you what variables are really important, and then test them.

      William Dukane I am a rep at Oakley and I can tell you I've had lots of customers come into my store replacing their lenses because they
      A) scratched
      B) Dog chewed on them
      C) fell of their head while getting into a car and they ran over their sunglasses.
      C is very rare but it happens. Oakley sunglasses for safety/military are Z87 rated. Meaning they are puncture and also shatter proof.
      All of Oakleys lenses are like that. When I got my first pair of Oakleys from where I work I brought them home and smashed the lense with a hammer to see if this is true. And for that I will always only buy Oakleys.

    I would like to see Oakley put more effort into putting more frames through APEL testing. There's a LOT of Joe's that are catching flack for not having APEL frames.

    • @KrKrypton
      @KrKrypton 7 лет назад +1

      FYI, APEL is an independent Army specific test and goes far and above Z87.1.

    • @danielhesse8600
      @danielhesse8600 7 лет назад

      KrKrypton it's expensive and completely unnecessary for most people. It would require frames to be built out of possibly bulkier, and less aesthetically pleasing materials, as well as raising the price of them beyond the optimal range for decent profitability. This is coming from someone who needs an ANSI stamp on glasses for them to be used at work. There are very few Oakley glasses that are actually stamped, and while I don't like it, I understand it.

    • @KrKrypton
      @KrKrypton 7 лет назад

      Daniel Hestopher it's necessary for the Army. Non-APEL approved eyewear cannot be worn in live-fire exercises or on the battlefield because of the need for a rating higher than Z87. Standard M-Frames are Z87 but due to the ease of removing the lense they do not meet APEL standards. APEL approved eyewear has a "ballistic hole" where there is a 3rd retaining mechanism in the middle if the frame/lense preventing the lenses from being easily removed/knocked out. There are other frames that are made similarly that haven't made it to APEL testing.

    • @danielhesse8600
      @danielhesse8600 7 лет назад

      KrKrypton I understand that. The simple fact is 99.9% of their customers are not in the military and do not need, want, or care about it. In any for profit company, it's all about the bottom line, and doing this for more glasses costs more money, and as previously mentioned has other drawbacks that would be more important to the vast majority of their customers. I wish more of their glasses were approved, but it doesn't make sense from a business perspective.

    • @The-Warrior-Optimist
      @The-Warrior-Optimist 7 лет назад +1

      Daniel Hestopher you literally don't know the subject matter. They offer many light and compact frames that pass these tests. Also, their glasses do not cost any more than most high end competitors. Furthermore, military, police, firefighters and athletes are all aware of impact standards and many buy these glasses because of their reputation for high quality and durability. They offer many styles in many price ranges. You can also select your lense type. Furthermore, Oakley's are literally standard issued to thousands of troops. You can't throw bullshit arbitrary numbers out there just because the safety standards are of no use to you. A high percentage of people who buy their products do so in part because of the safety standards.

      tydeze1 you are buying Luxotica made glasses. Whether the name or logo says Oakley, Ray Ban, D&G, or Chanel it all comes from the same factory.

    • @tydeze1
      @tydeze1 7 лет назад

      It's owned by them yes, but I don't think the factories are the same. As far as I can tell, it looks like the same type of relationship that Volkswagen has with all their subsidiaries. If you look at where they are being made, Ray-Ban's are made both in Italy and China where Oakley is made in the USA. The lenses on Ray-Ban's are glass, Oakley's aren't. So while yes, they are owned by the Luxottica Group, they appear to be quite independent of each other. Both with different approaches and standards.

      So, according to your argument, there's no real difference between a Jeep, Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge or say a Maserati (as they are all brands/car companies owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles)? Personally, if I was offered one of those cars for free and could pick, I would for example choose a Maserati Levante over a Fiat Panda or a Jeep Compass.

      you should just buy sunglasses for $20. same quality as Oakley, just won't say oakley on them. Why do you think lamborghini's and other high end cars perform so well? high quality parts are used because not many are made. Once you mass produce a product quality goes to the very bottom of the page

    • @ln6964
      @ln6964 5 лет назад

      @@Sanic55 Did you not watch the video? Glass and the plastics that are used in the $20 glasses aren't nearly as strong and will end with you very likely losing an eye. I can vouch for Oakleys lense quality and protection. Mine survived a 300 FPS .68 Caliber paintball round from 7 feet away. No eye damage.

  • @Rodrigo28GL
    @Rodrigo28GL 7 лет назад

    I just had to comment on this... among the comments below, some people recommend Vuarnet and Maui Jim. I had a look at their models in their websites and I don't think they're comparable. Not talking about material and quality (can't tell if they're better than Oakley or not), I'm talking about style and design. I simply didn't see myself doing outdoors with those models!! To me, they look utterly boring for that purpose. To me Oakley sounds interesting with the recent Radar capabilities added.
    Now, regarding the tests, I can't be sure of the equipment calibration, but both impact tests tell me a lot. Those were not regular impacts with everyday airborne particles... My eyes are precious and that's what I care about.
    Luckily we have a wide range of models and brands to choose from for different purposes, but If you find similar videos including tests for different brands please post the links.

I think it is worth investing in glasses like these. I just hope that now that Oakley is owned by luxotica they will steer away from this quality products
