I just went to another con yesterday and I was Tomie from the junji Ito manga. Now it was a closet cosplay but I looked pretty good and close to the character imo. Someone told me "oh I never would of guessed you were her" and honestly that crushed my soul more than anything. It wasn't creepy or anything at all, but man that hurt...

This happened to me once at a con. I cosplayed as Albert Wesker from resident evil. At the time, I didn’t have a proper wig but used a blonde wig. Someone said “are you from the matrix?” I kindly explained to him that I was Wesker from the video game. I don’t blame him, with the glasses and the black, leather coat, I did look like someone from that movie. He just said “oh ok” and walked away. I felt so bad and awkward.

Yes, I am older - 47 years, to be exact. I started to cosplay at the age of 45. Did not want to this myself before. But I do not want to hear that I am too old for this. It motivates me to do activities to keep me fit (go swimming, go for a walk with my husband). I also do not want hear that I am too fat. I am aware of that, and also work on that (in fact, have been doing that for all of my life). As long as I feel good, it is all that matters IMO. And I still feel good wearing that Mandalorian armor (because that is what I enjoy, I am even Boba Fett from time to time).

I hate it when people say that the cosplay does not like the orginal. Sometimes we make changes to the outfit so that it will work better. Not all cosplays have to be the exact copy of the character.

(Before i say this, know that i am a Gen Z) so many Gen Z think that nerd culture is for young people, completely forgetting that it’s the older generations who created fandom as we know it. People treat all older nerds as potential creeps and never interact with them, so you never get a chance to meet someone out of your age group. It really sucks. When I was a kid starting out, it was older cosplayers who kept me safe from the creeps.

I didn't start cosplaying until i was 30 and now I'm 40. My aunt just got into cosplay and she's in her 50s. It's great to cosplay at any age.
The thing I hate to hear as a cosplayer is "I hate that character but your costume is good". People should keep that first part to themselves

I'm 25 and I'd like to continue buying/making cosplays. I don't have that many because they cost a lot and I have a lot of hobbies. But every 2-3 years I do another one. I started when I was 18 and when I'm older I'm thinking of doing Elinor from Brave or Disney princesses, maybe some from Barbie...some steampunk or middle-age/fairytail inspired cosplays...I have so many ideas I don't intend to stop just because of age.
In fact, I hear it so often for so many things I like I don't care at all anymore, I do what makes me happy and what I want with my money.
Also, like you, I did get ride of some. Such as Yato from Noragami...because I needed space. Got ride of wigs too so some cosplays aren't complete. Some because I wasn't that proud of it like one of Kirika Yuumura from Noir (2001).
Thanks for the video, you're really fun to watch.

Great video! I really do not understand the age thing at all. Every time I see someone older who cosplays, especially cute grandparents I get super happy. I finally got my mom to go to a con with me earlier this year and she actually got herself a cosplay she wants to wear next year and I am so excited for that! And like you said, you get so much better at cosplaying with experience simplay because your techniques get to be refined! I think make up is a great example for that, the way my make up skills have gotten better is crazy!

Also cosplay got me the friends I have now I plan on cosplaying for as long as I live.

Whenever someone drops the age question, I always bring up people like Kamui or Maul - they're in the "too old for cosplay" category but they do it professionally, create wonderful projects, tutorials, guest appearances etc. That's what usually helps, e.g. a family member understood way better that it's not just "playing pretend and dressing up" but it's an art form that brings lots of comfort and new friendships 🙏

  • @bluewolf.cosplay

I needed to hear that you're never to old to cosplay, thank you. I've said something in passing to people before and have gotten the feeling "do they think I'm weird now, being 22 and still dressing up?" or along the lines, but it makes me happy!! I have fun with it, and honesty besides Halloween I don't really remember ever playing dress up besides maybe the occasional tiara as all kids do, so we heal the inner child and make them happy!!

The point about people saying you're too old for cosplay really hits home for me - honestly recently I've been feeling like I'm growing out of my local convention scene, but in all fairness a lot of the cons I go to seem to attract a larger younger audience than anything else plus I've been going to them for years at this point so I've already seen most of what they have to offer. That being said I couldn't agree more with what you said. I definitely didn't have the resources, the knowledge or the skill to make the kinds of cosplays I make now 7 or 8 years ago when I was first getting in to it. I'm just in the process of planning out one of the more complex cosplays I've made, and honestly there's no way I would have been able to make something like that back then. Plus I can actually afford the materials I need for that sort of thing now, and I can afford to go to conventions to wear them at.

when people treat you like YOU'RE the character and either get rude because they hate the character or just so creepy/intense towards you because they LOVE the character. I run into mannerless people at cons sometimes because I tend to cosplay the more antagonistic characters that people either adore or fume over, and it's honestly insane the mixed interactions I have sometimes. I've made cosplay friends with us sharing our unfortunate experiences though. At least it doesn't happen often but BOY when it does....it makes me glad I now have a group of friends that go to cons a lot too!

I know so many horror stories from Sakura (Naruto) cosplayers, who had to suffer through the most mean and awkward interactions with other con-goers, because the character is disliked by many people in the fandom. One even got kicked by a random person, because of something the character did in the anime.

At the World Cosplay Summit finals this year in Japan I was one of the youngest representatives, and I am 26 years old. Out of 33 teams of 2 (so 66 representative cosplayers) I would say the average age was 32. Youngest was 24, oldest as far as we know was 41. Cosplayers who are 30+ years old are certainly NOT too old!

Someone asked me why do I do original designs of canon characters. I just love the breaking down process of starting from absolutely nothing compared to a canon design that is already out there in the world when an original design is new and interesting and a new spin on something.
I find a real sense of joy and adrenaline when I design from scratch compared to using a canon design because I always find flaws in the original canon design and I have to alter it to my style and taste since I want it to look like it's mine and not something generic.

Love the points you made here! I recently turned 28 and hadn’t yet updated my tiktok bio. I have my age listed there since I prefer to interact with cosplayers who aren’t minors. (I wasn’t trying to fool anyone by not updating from 27 to 28. That profile just slipped my mind). I received a condescending comment saying “you’re 28. update your bio.” Not only was that creepy and invasive, it implied that my age was somehow important to my cosplay.
I’d also like to mention-I often see comments attempting to guess the cosplayer’s gender, sexuality, etc. These kinds of questions and assumptions are incredibly inappropriate and can be SO hurtful and triggering! I don’t know if some people assume creators won’t see their comments, but regardless, it’s not an appropriate thing to ask, nor is it relevant to the cosplay. No one is entitled to your personal identity and information!

The age thing is worth mentioning because my parents felt i was too old to cosplay when i was 21 and they saw it as an unprofessional hobby so they forced me to quit after i graduated college, im from a conservative family which explains it. I had so many regrets like not starting when i was a teenager because at that time i didnt know where to buy cosplay costumes that dont cost at least $100 where i only found out about facebook market that sells second hand costumes that are less than $20
Long story short last year i went back to cosplaying after talking it out with my parents who learned to accept it to the point now they really support me but there are rules like im not allowed to wear anything revealing, thanks to a cosplayer from my country who i admire who influenced me to go back. Im 30 now and on the road to my dream of being a professional cosplayer, fortunately for me according to most people i met through cosplaying i look young for my age that they usually guess im in my early 20s that it surprises them when i tell them im 30

And on the other side, I've had people be snarky and say "you wore the same cosplay again?"
People should be respected in their decision to wear or NOT wear a cosplay again! I don't understand the snide or shame people insist on giving
If someone wants to see my previous cosplays, those photos are still up 😫

Couldn’t agree more, I just recently experienced the „omg why would you sell X Cosplay???“ again when I decided to let go of my most popular one.
The reason I decided to sell it is that I lost a good amount of weight and am planning to maintain that. Due to that weightloss the corset and chest piece don’t fit anymore and you can basically see right into my bra cups, which is incredibly uncomfortable.
Explained this to everyone and people are still nagging like „omg but it’s so pretty“ 😭😭
Yeah. Imagine how pretty I’d be without having to be afraid of flashing you or someone snapping nasty pictures.

Agreed on these 3 things! For me? Storage and funds are going to be main issues I have faced thus far. (I live in my parents house where there is not very much space etc.) haha! I do a cosplay cull every year - two years.. so I do not horde etc.
Again, character tastes change. There are some I may never really do again at this stage.. I look back on them and enjoy them for what they were.... but I have my few cemented characters that I'll never ever get bored of... and they can be my staples etc.
I will be cosplaying for as long as possible. I can't wait to cosplay Grandma Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle when I reach my grey days. xD haha!! You are only as old as you feel. My folks know that my love of cosplay is not a phase. So.. They have not proceeded to say anything in that manner. So I am lucky in regard to that. We had a cosplay day at my workplace (I was an AIN in aged care.) I went as White Blood Cell from Cells at work. The residents loved it!! Most of them figured out what I was and loved how it matched my profession! Bringing joy via cosplay to all ages is my goal.
I think the main takeaway from this video and the previous one you've done Anya.. is everything is a matter of opinion... We can't control other people of course.. but educating is what we can do... If they still don't want to listen? Then become a bit passive aggressive.. in my experience? It gets the point across super loud and clear. :D My love of cosplay is to uplift me and help me find my tribe of folks who love the same things I do. That is it. :)

Touching on the second point in this video, that's partially why I came up with the name Random J. Cosplay because my cosplay line-up is best described as "random". I cosplay Jayne Cobb from Firefly, two different versions of The Joker (one of which I literally made up, Captain N The Game Master and Astos from Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin... those characters have nothing in common, and I don't care.
And quickly touching on your third point, I started going to cons at the age of 31 and started cosplaying at 35 and have gotten the "aren't you a little old for that" comment repeatedly and yet I've met people who are older than my parents who cosplay so 🤷🏻.

  • @weena2062

yeah...that 'aren't you too old now to do cosplay'-thing happened to me as well many times by now. I am 41 as of now and I still love cosplay like on day one. and over the years I learned to just don't listen to those people who say that ^^'. easy as that. they will never understand this kind of passion anyway so...why should I care about their opinion about that. if they think I'm still a kid: good! because I am and I enjoy life and play around. that's what everyone should do here and there honestly.

@@AnyaPanda thank you. Unfortunately we can't please everyone. It takes adjusting but I still cosplay just not as much as I like due to the age shame but I'm still trying my best.

You need new friends. I'm 33, my two of my besties and I go to conventions and cosplay. I hope your friends and family come around or that you find friends who love cosplay like you do

I see the age shaming a LOT with even like "cute" stuff, like are people just exposed to stop liking stuff after they turn 30? 🤨

Exactly! Your interests don't just stop after you hit 30 smh.

I think you already said it in the first video but I do not wanna hear sentences like "Oh i look so much worse/better than you" , "Look at us two, I look so ugly next to you" ,etc. Comparing cosplayers to each other makes no sence, because they do not have the same body, expertises and experiences. You will never have this exact other Cosplayers body and skill and the other way around. Comparing yourself to others and putting yourself higher or lower than somebody else is extremely counterproductive for having fun with the hobby and for your own mind. It is just uncomfortable to hear a person say that, because it is often bound to insecurities.
