When I was young my Grandmother would take me to a local IHOP near her home every Saturday morning for about 5 years , between the ages 11 and about 16. I'd always get the largest stack of those delicious butter milk pancakes 🥞 and pour a ton of syrup on them. Such beautiful memories.

Is it just me, or is that boy grinning at that stack of pancakes in the beginning of the video Johnny Crawford of Rifleman fame? At any rate, another great video! Have to say though that for my taste buds, Perkins has better pancakes. I know that they are only in certain areas, but here in NE Pennsylvania there are several locations.

In the 1960's and 1970's, International House of Pancakes had wonderful food, great service, and reasonable prices. Today, the food is mediocre at best, portions are small, service is less than stellar, and the prices are exorbitant. My wife and I have many fond memories from their early days, but prefer to spend our restaurant money elsewhere. What a shame!

I agree. I went with my friend to an IHOP last year and the food and service was good. So I went there with my friend about 6 months later to the same location. The service was slow, the food had small portions and not very tasty, and a loud conversation was going on right next to us. I'll never go back.

I've been going to the "International House of Pancakes" since the 1960's.
I remember when they used to have about 8 or 10 different flavors of syrup right on the side of each table, giving customers a variety of flavors of syrup. I don't see the variety of syrups available on the tables anymore.
I went to an "International House of Pancakes" the other day, and I've been noticing that there are no crepes on the menu!!
I believe that it was the "International Passport Crepes",
that gave the restaurant it's name!!!
    What's the deal???
They changed the menu on us!! I thought I was going to "International House of Pancakes"!!!
Now, it appears to be, that they are calling it "IHOP", a whole complete different restaurant!

i can appreciate international house of pancakes. i did not know understand how important it is to my friend chet lau.(chester) his dad a chinese owner of a restaurant in china town in new york city. it is not the american chinese food many of us so called american think of but true chinese delicacies like chicken feet chicken with the head still on duck with the head still on. i will i did not under it then. but it was a celebration banquet that chets parents had to rejoice that their son married a lady from china and invited good friends of chester from connecticut to they celebration in honor of the married couple.
back to the ihop story before it was ihop. chester went to ihop for breakfast on saturday mornings with his dad religiously. i am not certain if it was a bonding of two cultures the american born son and the chinese born father. a way to blend cultures so no one culture dominated. but i know that chet went with his mother to find a bride of chinese birth and/or friends of the family in the proverbial old country.
i am not sure chet might have been the youngest son. he has an older sister brenda who suggested that my eventual life partner and eventually my wife should get together similar to chet and his life partner ping. maybe a prearranged marriage. since i believe in god i will think of as divine intervention with humans guiding the way. chet settled down in west hartford. with his ping and thier three sons a couple blocks from an old ihops looking building
my dear wife's autistic but functional to normal standards whatever normal is. clayton loved celebrating his birthday at the newer ihops.
and i can be a glutton and eat for an hour on eating all you can eat pancakes and wash them down with a gallon of coffee. and the stand joke where did it go. i pointed to my legs saying that my stomach was full and i was filling my hollow legs. at least it was for a good laugh.
      until later my friend.

When I was a little kid, a new one opened in the neighborhood. I nagged my parents, who were kind of hard, until they grudgingly finally took me. I ordered a big waffle, and I was dazzled by all those colored syrups. My parents warned me to choose only one, but I wanted them all. I started pouring a different one into each of the quadrants against their warnings. Well, the syrups flowed into each other because it was a bad idea to begin with, and I'd put on too much as well. The dyes mixed, and it turned into a soggy, gray, inedible mass. My parents got angry and told me to eat it anyway. The trip to the pancake house had turned into a disaster. I sat there under their glare and quietly the tears flowed. The waitress came over and asked what was wrong and saw the mess. She offered to bring some pancakes. Dad angrily said he wasn't buying anyless else and to leave the waffle. The waitress gave me a pat and left. A little while later she came with a plate of pancakes, removed the dead, grey waffle, looked at my dad and said, "It's on the house," and mussed my hair. Yeah, I only used one syrup.🥺🤤😁

I-Hop is my Favorite Place to eat breakfast, if there was one much closer to me, I would be there quite a bit, I could eat I-Hop 24/ 7. When, I was in Florida on a vacation quite some yrs ago, there was one across from the hotel we were staying at, for about a little over a week and, we ate breakfast there everyday, I thought, I’d died and gone to heaven. I have so many good memories of this place from so, many vacations.

In sixty’s my parents moved from the east to west coast. On the trip west we stopped at an Ihop. My father said order anything you want but no meat. Five kids and all you could eat pancakes at the time that was as good as it gets when your a kid.

    Strawberry
    Blueberry
    Butter pecan
    on the table
Now they just being maple, idk if because of covid or what, I get NY Cheesecake and regular syrup is fine so idk

I hadn't been to IHOP in years. I was out of town and there was one across from the hotel so I said heck yeah! Pretty disappointed. Way too expensive for the small portion I got and was charged for everytime the waitress topped off my coffee. Never again.

Every Friday morning us 5 business partners meet early for a business breakfast. Each takes turn picking up the tab. Employees know we won't be in the office until 8:30. It' s been a tradition for years at the local Ihop.

Today, I won't go into one of those places because I just can't afford it. Great quality food! But way over priced.

I used to work for a company that sold coffee, tea and was a distributor for the syrups, flours salsa and spaghetti sauces. I never went into a clean kitchen they were all filthy. The franchisees were most often pakistanis who were rude, mistreated their employees and these peiople did not like to pay their bills, we would constantly have to get oks the charge orders for them on a routine basis . I slipped once in a kitchen and pulled a groin muscle and another time in the same restaurant fell in the same place due to the floor constantly being wet which was common among all of them as was the practice of piling the trash generated at breakfast time and lunjch time into a huge pile against the back door. Beware of these places.

When I was a child in the fifties and sixties we looked for Toddle House restaurants on vacation, not IHOP. 'My' local IHOP today is a septic tank, poorly run and nasty. But I loved eating there in Houston in the seventies when they still had the high roofed buildings and those Thermo-Serve coffee pitchers.

I used to like the "pigs in blankets." I would have loved to try the Tahitian orange pineapple pancakes. It seems to me there used to be five different kinds of syrup - the last time I was in one there were only four.

I've always liked IHOP. There is one just a couple miles down the road but I haven't been there in a few years. I used to go to this mom and pop place instead because I like supporting small business but COVID shut them down (just one of a million heartbreaking stories there). Anyway, when I think of IHOP I always think of Father Edwards. He was a priest at the parish I was part of as a kid and I used to do Saturday morning Mass with him when I was an altar boy. He was always kind to us and would take the altar boys who worked Saturday's to IHOP after Mass. He was a good and decent man and I miss him and the wisdom he imparted on all us parishioners way back when. RIP Father. I trust God had a few cigars ready for you and a little something for that flask you kept near your vestments. God Bless and I'll be along directly.

Good to hear recollections about a Catholic priest who was kind to the kids he had contact with. There were many of them, but unfortunately we hear too much about the ones who weren't so kind, and that causes the good guys to be overlooked all too often. Thanks for your comment.

Their pancakes suck and their syrups are just PURE SUGAR WITH FAKE FLAVORS. Gross. I have 2 different mom & pop breakfast places close to me. The food is great, fresh & they both have REAL MAPLE SYRUP. And one place has BUCKWHEAT pancakes that are fantastic. I would not waste a penny at IHop. I want to pay for REAL FOOD.

In 1973 I moved from small town to Kansas City. My parents came to visit and I took them and my little brother (12) there for their 1st time. This was the 1st time my little brother ever saw a round scoop of butter on top of his pancakes. He thought it was ice cream and popped it in his mouth. Not relevant here but a good laugh.

IHOP has gone downhill big time. All of them in my area are run down, in need of repair. They no longer have a unique building design, but have taken over buildings that used to be something else. The food is just ok, the prices are high, and most servers are rude and inconsiderate. They even have "please pay your server" printed on their checks. Servers are STILL wearing masks, something I do not appreciate. The last time I was there I paid $22 for a burger and fries, including tax and tip. That's about twice what it should have cost, especially since the service was virtually nonextant. They have gotten much worse since the fake political pandemic, and don't seem to realize it is OVER. I won't likely be going back.

It’s definitely gone way downhill since the 1960s. It used to be fun when my dad took me there, but now my experience has included so-so service, dirty bathrooms and almost no hint of the international pancake offerings like before. All they have now are different flavored syrups!

I hate that they now call it IHOP now exclusively, same with KFC. I remember eating at the International house of Pancakes as a child 71-72-73. These new abbreviated names don't sound appetizing and it seems to be no coincidence that when they changed the names the establishments started to struggle... at least where I am in the greater New York City area where many have closed down or have become a bit of a dive.

When I would stay in Rhode Island in my youth, during the late 60’s-early 70’s, IHOP was one of the few restaurants open after nightclub hours. For this reason it was a haunt for many a teen on date nights, (Wednesdays and Saturdays). Needless to say, many pots of coffee arrived at tables so as to “sober up” before returning home. (The purchase of alcohol was permitted for those 18 years and older at that time. For those too young, there were a myriad of invalid id’s exchanged...to pass getting “carded” by bouncers a club doors.)

I used to be a busboy/dishwasher at International House of Pancakes, 1968-1969 in the North Miami area while in High School. At closing time we had to scrub several grates from under the kitchen cooking grills. Not fun at $1.60 per hour. I have fond memories of this restaurant and the people I worked for!
