#recollectionroad #nostalgia #krystal
I'm from Southern California and my first encounter with Krystal was while visiting in Atlanta in 1967. It was at a Krystal located very close to Avondale Estates, an affluent area on the NE side of the city. I'd never seen a square hamburger before, but boy, these were delicious! I remember the price was around 10 or 11 cents each back then. While at the Krystal, my niece and I ran into one of the members of the rock group, Paul Revere and The Raiders. His name was Freddy Weller. His mother lived in Avondale Estates and he was visiting her and decided to pop into the Krystal for a bite. It was really cool!
Kool Krystal story!
Your "brush with greatness" as David Letterman used to call it...
Amazing story!!!
I lived in Avondale Estates in the 80's, but never met anyone famous. Krystal was my after a night of partying place. We would buy the burgers by the sack for 12 cents apiece. Good times!
There are some channels that when they post a new video, you instantly give the video a 👍🏼 because you know it will be a good one. This is one of those channels.
I agree😊
👍before watching
Yes!.😀
Seriously. I’ve never even heard of Krystal’s but these videos are always so well done and the pictures are great so I watch anyway!
I grew up in Dalton, Ga. Chattanooga was less than 30 miles north from Dalton. Krystals were a Sunday treat, 10 cents each and a shake for 15 cents. When the first Kyrstal came to Dalton in 1968, Krystals were 12 cents each and the shake was 20 cents. So, as a teenager I could walk to the local Krystal and have a meal of 5 Krystals and a shake for 83 cents, including tax. Thank you, this a walk through memory lane. Jim
My ex wife is from Dalton.
Still open in Dalton? I go through there every so often.
I had never heard of Krystal. Thanks for the interesting video 🙂
You must try them! Really good cheese burgers 🍔 and chili cheese hotdogs! Of course just once in a while 😉
@@carolineconnor2156 I don't live anywhere near a Krystal, but if I'm ever able to visit the South I will give them a try 😉
I just love this series. I just don't want them ever to end. 👍🏼 👍🏼 👍🏼 👍🏼
Interesting to hear about several of these type of places that never made it to my neck of the woods.
Same here, I had never heard of Krystal before seeing this video.
Where do you live?
I hadn't heard of Krystal either. I think I'm missing out!
I found it when I moved to Macon, Georgia it was ok
@@1974geary Detroit
I’m from Georgia and my first memory of going to a fast food restaurant was to a Krystal. We didn’t go out to eat much because Mom always cooked being a at home Mom in the sixties. I remember being so thrilled to sit in the stools that faced the big windows.
Great video! Never heard of them, thanks for sharing.
Me either, this channel always showing us establishments we never knew existed.
P.S. These Sunday treats were in the late 1950's to early 1960's and there was no interstate highway, so it had to be done on old US 41. We saw other towns, because we went through the middle of them. They were beautiful small towns, and those towns should be seen today. There were small roadside attractions everywhere. This is a part of 1950's to 1960's America that I will forever miss. Jim
I didnt think Elvis could get any cooler, then I learned he handed out sacks of Krystal sliders to his friends. Gotta have a Krystal.
Eff that guy.
When I was very young back in the early 1960's we would take a monthly trip from Oak Ridge TN to Alabama and we drove through Chattanooga to get there before the Interstates were built and we always drove by one of the main Krystal restaurants, it had a huge Stainless ball on top of the sign. Oak Ridge had a Blue Circle burger restaurant 😋
the Blue Circle had a really great Chipped Ham sandwich too.
As a child that grew up in Oak Ridge, TN. We used to eat at the Krystal on the turnpike next to Applebee's every Saturday morning. They made a great, clean breakfast.
@@thedreadtyger I remember the Blue Circle with the burgers served on wax paper. How about the Da-Wabbit? We went there often. We hardly ever went to the Blue Circle, I was at the mercy of the drivers...
@@hinspect i was just south of you, in Powell
This is literally my first time hearing about this. Can't believe I've never heard of them!
I've literally never heard of this place either.
White Castle yes, I've ate there many times.
They are only located in the South.
I've never herd of them until today
I love Krystal burgers, the chili is pretty good too. The one in my hometown was open 24 hrs and I would often stop by after working the graveyard shift for a sack full. My record is 14 but that was years ago as a teenager with a bottomless pit for a stomach. I limit it to 4 with fries and chili these days.
Definitely got them after getting off at midnight, that drive was around the block late night
Savannah Georgia - they will clear up a late night hangover really well. LOL
Three words I LOVE KRYSTAL!!!!!
I remember eating at Krystal in Brunswick Georgia all the time!! it's been well over 20 years since I've been there... live in Ohio now and we have White Castle.. visiting Brunswick and SSI in November! cant wait to grab some Krystal!
They had one just off Exit 29 I95 that was terrible last year when I ate there. Now it is closed down!
LOVE your videos!!
I have eaten more than my share of Krystal's...may have to have one again soon after watching this!
I live in Memphis Tn and fortunately when I'm in Nashville I can get a White Castle! The best of both worlds!
Never heard of Krystal until this episode. There are / were so many chains that are regional specific.
Thank you for this superb documentary and your many others. I have many fond memories of Krystal. I went to college and grad school in Nashville TN from 1976 to 1983. Krystal (or, as many students affectionately called it, "Greastle") was right across the street from campus. It was a hugely popular late-night destination for study breaks, bedtime snacks, or drunk munchies after the bars closed. They even had breakfast for those who preferred it, but the sliders, fries, and chili were king! All these years later, I can still remember their unique, wonderful taste, especially after a few beers! Sadly, the Krystal is long gone, but great memories remain.
Many thanks for your wonderful video! I had a dear friend who resided in Tennessee, and we ALWAYS ate at the many "Krystal's" down there, especially after, um, "imbibing". Those little "sliders" sure soaked up the, um, alcohol. NO HANGOVERS EVER!!! 👍💋
We used to go to Krystals in the 70's for a munchies run lol.
The last time I eat at a Krystal, it was just outside of Laurel,MS. It was delicious. I had a half dozen burgers, fries, and chili.
I grew up halfway between Atlanta/Chattanooga. Krystal was always a hot spot on the weekends in the 80s/90s.
My dad loved Krystal burgers. We called them "gut bombs".
thats funny, up north we call White Castle burgers "belly bombers" lol
I used to eat at Krystal's in Knoxville and loved the cheeseburgers and fries with a shake.
I grew up in Jax, Fl , and love Krystal. In the 80's you could get a 12 pack sack for $2.50 with a coupon. They also had a really good patty melt. I don't live anywhere near a Krystal now, but the last time I went they were actually pretty pricey for what you got.
@Ken Hill, my family and I are from Jacksonville FL. We moved in 75. I was only 10.
Yep, they're too rich for my blood now. Steak is cheaper, ounce for ounce.
I also grew up in Jax. Now live in NC about 25 mi north of Charlotte. Nearest Krystal is near the NC SC line on I-85.
I'm near Oxford AL. Closest Krysal is about 12 miles away
@@kencarnley7101 I live in Asheville, and I think the closest to me is Knoxville. I have actually made the drive and ate there in younger days. I went for the food, but made a day of checking the town out.
Love this channel I’m from Chattanooga. The family that owned Krystal’s really did a good job running it. They sold it to an Atlanta company a few years ago and it hasn’t been the same since. I think the family that owned kristals owned a drive through called Central Park in the 80s.
My first visit to Krystal's Was the year of 1968 in Atlanta Georgia I was 5 years old with my Dad I was amazed with the huge silver ball will never forget it
The one on Bourbon Street in New Orleans was really busy when I was there about 7 years ago. I'd always wanted to try them, and they were really good.
Yet another sad story of how a private mission-driven company goes public, then the legal problems, then bankruptcy along with a complete loss of direction.
I go get me a sackful of Krystal sliders every once in a while. I can only eat about 6 in one sitting, depending on how I feel. With fries and a drink, makes a delicious lunch or dinner. Love em.
What I remember about krystal is it was my worst job ever a franchise store who failed every standard inspection for 3 years that I worked there I was a manager trying to run a shift on 9 percent labor. The franchise owner was a total jerk who had forgotten that lincoln had freed the slaves
I grew up in Atlanta, with two Krystals very close by. I have fond memories of eating there as a kid in the ‘60s and on into my adult life. But in my younger years I never heard anyone refer to Krystal burgers as “sliders.” Matter o’ fact, I never heard the term at all until the mid-2010s. A bit of Googling tells me that “sliders” goes back many decades and, according to some sources, originated with White Castle. But it must’ve been a regional (or multi-regional) thing because I never heard anyone in the South use it until relatively recent years.
Was a mgr back in the late 80's early 90's back when they were great.
I remember have the Krystal Kritters here in Georgia.
Love to read the testimonies of those who were able to visit and eat at the Krystal Restaurants. It is really shocking to hear of Hamburgers that cost less then 25 cents and realize that today a Big Mac Meal at Mac Donalds cost about $ 11.00 dollars, my how times have changed.
I remember going to a Krystals and the burgers reminded me very much of White Castle burger. It was enjoyable to go there from time to time and enjoy the food.
Definitely close to white castles!
When my wife and I were dating in Jacksonville, Fl, we would get Krystal’s for 7 cents. She has always loved their chili also. On our honeymoon, this is where she wanted to go eat. 53+ years later, we still go get a bag full!
When I was a kid in Jackson Mississippi, my dad would take me to Krystal... He said his pop use to take him when he was young....The key ingredient was the bottle of mustard on each table....you would put mustard on each burger and devour it in three bites...They were 10¢ ea by the late 60's, but dad said they had always been a nickel ea when he was younger eating there... !!!
What great memories ❤️🍽️
Ever notice how all companies that go from family run to Public end up in bankruptcy? I’m glad Krystal has survived.
Lewis Grizzard, a columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, referred to them as "gut bombs". Four is my limit.
I love Kystral. I live in North Carolina, we have Kystrals here.
Being from Nashville, I grew up with Krystal. My favorite location was the “hole in the wall” store on Church St next to Loews theater in downtown Nashville. As a young teen, I’d buy a big sack and smuggle them into the theater. Who needs popcorn when you have sliders! I can remember when the price went up from a dime to 12 cents. I still like them better than White Castle, but can’t get them where we live now,
I'm also originally from Nashville. Was the Krystal on Church the one that had large mirrors on each wall that kind of gave an infinity effect?
@@dkm5247 I don’t recall the mirrors, only a lot of polished stainless steel. If I remember correctly, this was the store that had the donut machine in the front window, but I may have that confused with the Tick Tock which was almost next door. There were at least 3 downtown Krystal’s that I remember including one on 5th near the Orange Julius, and one on 2nd near the courthouse. The one on 2nd was 24 hour, as I often ate there in ‘69 when I was working a midnight shift for South Central Bell.
And, does anyone remember Krystal Kritters in the early 70s? An ad campaign with cartoon characters of a Walrus, Hippo, and Monkey. Lots of giveaways and lots of fun.
I grew up in the 60's and Krystals were always my favorite fast food. Sadly I believe I ate my last Krystal. The order for 4 Krystals, 3 Cicks, 2 Frys, and 2 small cokes from the limited combo menu came to a total of $ 21.57. When I got home most of the food was thrown away due to the hamburger was under cooked and the fried items tasted like old grease. I actually cried because growing up this was a happy place for me to go to.
Memories from the corners of my mind......
I remember going to Atlanta in the 60s and they used to post the price on an outside sign..10 cents for a Krystal...
As a teenager growing up in Birmingham Alabama back in the sixties Krystal was my favorite place to go for a sack full of burgers.
When I lived in Tennessee and Alabama, we used to go to Krystal restaurants. The last time I went to Krystal was in Panama city Florida while I was on vacation in 2003.
The Krystal was the first "fast food" restaurant in Chattanooga. McDonalds didn't open here until 1963. They served breakfast, eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, waffles, grits. In the 70s they started serving fried chicken which was delicious. Along with burgers and fries, they served donuts and pie slices along with coffee or whatever drink you liked. I still have several heavy Krystal coffee cups with the logo on them. Best coffee cups ever too. Now days, I don't think they steam them long enough to get that ooey gooey bun that tastes so good. They also have so much more to offer such as cheese pups, chili cheese pups, corn pups, chicken sandwiches, fries, tater tots, milkshakes, biscuits and gravy. The Krystal was where we went when all the bars closed, to try and get as much alcohol out of our system as we could. Gotta love the Krystal!
Born & raised in Chattanooga, Krystal was a household name in the 60's & 70's. Still get that craving every now and then!
Grew up eating Krystals. Still do today, 60+ years later.
If you know....you know.
I’m from So Cal & the first time I seen a Krystal’s fast food was about 3 yrs ago in Southeast Georgia while on vacation. I’ve never heard of this company before but I was familiar w/White Castles. I gave them little squared burgers a try, purchased the 6 pk squared burgers, fries & a soda for $10. I wasn’t impressed but I wanted to see what all the fuss was about with these little squared burgers. IMO White Castles tasted better.
I looooooooooooove Krystal burgers!!! Whenever I go to central Florida to visit I MUST stop to get my "Krystal fix" at least once! I can eat 12 in one sitting, plus the fries! And since the burgers are so small and have mustard, pickles & onions, you can eat a whole bunch and not consume a ton of calories---I call them "diet burgers"!
I am in Knoxville, TN. We still have Krystal all over the place here! Though, it makes me want to go get some right now. heh
the main thing I remember about Krystal's is that the burgers were MUCH better than White Castle! Just a better taste without all the grease!!
I remember back in the mid 70's in Macon Ga.me and my
uncle were out one night and heading home and he asked me if I would like a Krystal hamburger I said yeah sure and living at the time in Colorado I didn't know about the place. He pulled up to the drive thru and ordered 25 plus fries.
Love your videos. Could you please do one on Maid-Rite? I've ate at one of the last ones in Lexington, MO. Apparently it's still there! Also the Loose Meat Sandwich from the TV show Rosanne is based on a Maid-Rite sandwich.
Krystal restaurant is sentimental to me cause my late father took me there and it was our favorite place to eat those Krystal steamers and fries with lemonade Miss u pops & Thank u
Thanks RR😊
Any time day or night they are the best!!!
I grew up in Hendersonville, TN. While I was in high school, I worked at the local Krystal as a drive-thru cashier.
Now I live in south florida and sadly there are no Krystals in my area.
I have to drive 3 hours north to Titusville to get my Krystal fix.
Stopped at krystals in Johnson city TN many of times coming back for a night at the club. Good times!
Never heard of a Krystal till now.
Greetings from Maryland!
👍👍
Love this! Nostalgic! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🦄🦄🦄😇😇🎂🎂😍😍😘🤑🤑🐓🐈
I grew up in Chattanooga and always remember going to the Crystal downtown and the one on Brainerd Road. I still love Crystals and every time I go to Chattanooga from Florida where I live now I always get a huge sack full of crystals to take home with me.
As a kid ,in the 60’s and getting a driver’s license it was a major Road Trip to go 100 miles to the big city of Knoxville,TN and go to Krystal . We’d eat a dozen Krystal burgers each. I’ve lived out west for decades, but every time I go visit Tenn I always stop at a Krystal and have a half dozen Krystal Burgers for that taste of home and nostalgia. Krystals are great.
I actually remember Krystal once while I was visiting one of my cousins in FL with my wife, and brother it kind of has that different taste then White Castle's sliders lol but it tastes totally better lol imo. 😂
Enjoyed. I used to love King castle burgers and the square ice cream scoops also. They were another take too on the little square burger.
There was also a "Royal Castle" chain of small burgers 🍔
In the 1990s, I was an aircraft technician at the Atlanta airport working the midnight shift. My buddies and I would get off work at 7am, head to Krystals and each of us would get a ten-pack with extra onions. I loved those little burgers!
Love Krystals! One of the few places open really late which was nice in my college years!
That’s all I could afford in college in Tenn.
Was stationed at NAS Cecil Field. Was in VA-105 1972-75. Krystal was about 10 min away. Had them many times.
Loved that they would be open 24 hours when I would be on road trips. A sackful would take me wherever I needed to go.
I go there all the time with my brother and friends
I GREW UP IN NASHVILLE TN. AND WE HAD A KRYSTAL THERE WOW IT WAS THE BEST. SURE LOVED THOSE LITTLE BURGERS. WISHED THEY HAD ONE HERE BUT OUR TOWN IS SMALL BACK WHEN I WAS TENAGER I COULD EAT 12 OR 14 OF THOSE KRYSTAL
THEY WAS REALLY GOOD.
I lived in Atlanta for 26 years and have no idea how many Krystals I ate. My standard order was six cheese Krystals with an occasional switch to three double cheese gut bombs. I now live on the west coast and dearly miss my beloved little square friends.
I remember buying some of these Krystals 🍔 🍔 🍔 when I was down south they are very 👍 👍 👍 👍 and they remind me of White 🏰 🏰 🏰 🍔 🍔 🍔 thanks for 📫 this.
My best memory of Krystals is working with a guy who sometimes came in with "a sack full", usually a dozen and have them for lunch. A slider in one hand and a Krystal salt packet in the other, my overweight and high blood pressure co-worker would polish off the majority of the sliders. I gave deep thought to what I would do if he keeled over while I was working with him. I eventually decided I would step over him, call the security office and get the heck out of there!
I remember the curb service. Each parking space had a little phone you'd pick up and make your oder over. They'd bring your order to you in little red baskets and you'd enjoy your food right there in the car.
I moved to Florida from Indiana. I missed White Castle and Krystal was the closest thing available but it's not the same. Nothing can replace the taste of a steamed White Castle bun.
I was from NJ and then CA and while I visited the south, had not heard of Krystal. Sounds like it was ahead of its time with Wi Fi.
Thanks for the video.
I remember one in Millington TN when I was stationed there in the early 80's. Nice!
Never heard of Krystal, until I drove by one in Dalton Alabama last week. Then it shows up here.
I still love Krystal! And I’m 72
Still love Krystal today!! The best small hamburgers!!!💖
This such a great channel. Thanks. Please do Sizzler when you can.
My family and I stopped at a Krystal in Nashville to use the restroom, but I ended up getting a few burgers. Good stuff.
"And as always', I've enjoyed your snippets of Americana. Although I've never heard of Krystal, the brand seems worthy of some good luck in their effort to rebound from bankruptcy. Thanks for the post!
I loved the sunriser for breakfast. Also in Jax Florida they were open all night long, which was nice when working 2nd and 3rd shift.
They are all over the Memphis area. Back in the 70-early 80's, a dozen were cheap and the chili was so good back then. On rare occasions, i'll order about a dozen with a few chili pups and chili cheese fries.
In the early 60's my whole family used to see who couldthe most Krystals!
I'm pushing 80 and up until now never heard of Krystal. But then most of my life was spent in the North. Looks like there aren't any in Texas where I am now, so I guess I'll never get to experience a Krystal burger.
Me either!
they are kinda like white castle, only not as good...
My Krystal memory is stopping there in Knoxville, TN at about 4am on a Christmas trip from Charlotte, NC to Nashville, TN. Apparently, they were open 24 hours. If I'm correct, they served doughnuts and we'd get a dozen that were hot and fresh. I never did like the hamburgers but my Mom loved them! I think I've had the chicken a time or 2 but the doughnuts were great.
Grew up eating Krystal hamburgers we use to build pyramids with the empty boxes as we ate.
Growing up in Chicagoland and being transplanted into southwest Florida. Biannual trips to Tampa would always include a trip to Krystal. Very good substitute for White Castle's if you get them without the mustard. But I think they're going to be done down here, a White Castle Megastore opened up in Orlando.
Late 1970s I was in south Carolina. Used stop in savanna and have some.
Wow. Never even heard of this until now.
live in Pa. so I never had a Krystal but I hope one day I will.
When I was a boy, my family and I ate at one of the original Krystal restaurants in Chattanooga. Now, I can't afford Krystals. The burger that was a nickel originally, and a dime when I was a boy, is now almost a dollar apiece. In some places they get $1.49!
That's crazy!
true
Pound per pound you could probably eat a good steak for the price of Krystals. Now with all the downsizing they can't make the meat any thinner.I still grab a sack every now and then.
I love Krystals, we had one for years in lake mary fl, but it closed down several years ago. I used to eat there 5 or 6 times a week, never got tired of the place. I keep hoping they'll open one in Sanford fl before I die. Now that I'm retired I'd eat there everyday. The nearest one to me now is a 45 minute drive too far for me to go.
