  • The Official Music Video for the song SUNSETS IN ROME by Scooter Pietsch feat. Jasmine Tommaso. Although this is my video interpretation of the song, feel free to make your own! I wrote this song in the middle of the pandemic, when I was really missing Italy and the ability to travel. Rome is one of the great cities of the world and I have many fond memories of being there - as I'm sure many of you do, too. Even if you haven't been there yet. And I purposefully say "yet" because I know you will make it there one day. So here's to all of us being able to travel again. To being able to see all of the amazing things this world has to offer. To living life. And hell, to having a Negroni at Canova in Piazza del Popolo in Rome.
Jasmine Tommaso is the featured singer on this track. She was born in Rome but now lives in Los Angeles. We connected through a couple of mutual music industry contacts when I was looking for a native Italian-speaking singer. Jasmine really brought SUNSETS IN ROME to life. Her sound is perfect for the blend of Italian Pop and nostalgia I was hoping for.
When I first wrote the song, my goal was to write something that really featured an acoustic bass. I played an early version on a keyboard and immediately knew that the brilliant Kevin Axt could take it to another level. I gave Kevin free reign to play it as he felt it. And I couldn't be happier. The glisses, slides and bends under the narration really support and accentuate the "noir" vibe I was shooting for.
And to really capture that "noir" vibe, you just have to have a muted trumpet. And who other than the terrific John Fumo? John played so many tasty and inventive and fun melodies throughout the track, I could easily make a version of the song without narration and singing and it would work incredibly well. Hell, maybe I will!
Grazie for watching and "Here's to love, to Rome, and the fall of it all." OK, maybe not that last part ever again. Ciao, Scooter

I threw back the last of my Negroni and was ordering another when she walked in.
In the mirror, through the glisten of the Campari and the Bombay Sapphire,
I watched her cross the cafe and settle in.
“Negroni, Sbagliato,” she said to the bartender and I thought,
“People who know how to drink, never need a shrink.”
With our spirits in front of us, she tipped her glass a bit my way.
“Here’s to love, to Rome and the fall of it all.”
Hai visto un tramonto, (Have you seen the most beautiful)
Il più bello del mondo? (Sunset in the world?)
Succede ogni tanto, (It happens every now and then,)
Come per incanto. (As if by magic.)
    Her name was Sophia,
    And yeah, she was Italian.
Said she was related to Michelangelo.
I told her I didn’t think I could handle that kind of pressure.
She smiled and looked at me.
“Beautiful things are everywhere,” she said. “They can be your salvation.”
I said, “Beautiful things terrified me.” And ordered another Negroni.
We were at Canova, Fellini’s favorite bar.
And she asked me if I’d been to the church around the corner.
I said I didn’t spend a lot of time praying, it tended to cut down on my drinking.
“The Crucifixion of St. Peter” is in there,” she said. “You remind me of him.”
I didn’t want to know the answer, but still, I asked her why.
“It’s the sadness in his eyes, as he looks at the nail, that’s been driven through the palm of his hand.”
    Hai visto un tramonto,
Il più bello, bello del mondo?
    Succede ogni tanto,
    Come per incanto.
We climbed the steps up to the Terrazza,
And took in the view of Rome.
Past the twin churches and the obelisk in the piazza,
All the way to St. Peter’s dome.
    Hai visto un tramonto,
Il più bello, bello del mondo?
    Succede ogni tanto,
    Come per incanto.
    Hai visto un tramonto,
    Il più bello del mondo?
    Succede ogni tanto,
    Come per incanto.
“Sunsets in Rome are better than anywhere else in the world,” she told me.
So I let the yellow, orange and red glow soak in.
    And I believed her.
    Come per incanto.

Welcome lovers of Italy and Rome! Not being able to travel in 2020 really made me miss some of my favorite places in the world. In this case, Rome. Hopefully, this video will keep our wanderlust alive and we'll all see each other there in 2021. Viva Roma!
