Didn't like 1st episode but persevered and thought it was good. Once Bishop went from an impression to mannerisms I liked him. Some supporting character a bit dodgy but worth another series. Only Fools wasn't an instant hit. it took time.
Watched the whole series now - I enjoyed it! Not as good as the original, there's some tightening to be done with the characters and the jokes, but it's a nice setup, a good selection of characters, and some interesting, fresh storylines. Kevin Bishop is a tad cartoony at times (the first episode he took a while to get going, strangely after having had such a grip in the special last year), but other times brings some real heart to the role. I'd watch this over the majority of other British sitcoms at the moment, and if Still Open All Hours can get to 4 series I don't see why this shouldn't run for a few years.
I don't feel the need to lie about my opinions - it was pretty good. Far from perfect - too many scenes and episodes ended on questionable lines, and the guest stars felt too indispensable, and so didn't gel with the rest of the show as well (they should have made them more like recurring characters; Nigel's ex brought a great energy and dynamic to the show, I'd love to see her stay on, maybe as an antagonistic love interest?) - but I enjoyed it. It was familiar but new at the same time; the characters weren't just carbon copies, they were different enough to have unique dynamics, and while they could have been more thoroughly drawn (maybe spend the episodes focusing on the main and supporting characters instead of bringing in a Meekey clone and a rock star?) there's enough there that I enjoy having them on screen. I hope it gets another series, and I hope it improves. I doubt I'll ever have a craving to watch the show, but if it's on or if I'm marathoning the whole Fletcher run, I wouldn't avoid watching it. What didn't you like about the show? I see you've complained about the 'box-ticking' (or, as others call it, 'diversity' :P ), but what specifically do you think is wrong with the show? I've listed my issues, let's talk :)
I've just seen it on Gold initially I thought NOOoooo.... You can't remake it. But to be honest it wasn't bad. It could never match the original but it had the flavour of the original. You could never replace Ronnie but it was OK dare I say it good. I hope to see more.
Porridge is a classic. This dodgy excuse for a show is like one of those experimental breakfast cereals, that appears for a short time, then thankfully disappears
Me and the missus just about got through 15mins of episode 1. Clearly as bad as the pilot. To be honest you can hear the Clement & Le Frenais gags, but the actors have no comic timing whatsoever. It all seems far too fast. Too rushed. Comedy has to be able to breath by allowing pauses for tension to build. What a disaster. Typical BBC of late, massaging the viewing figures of the pilot to justify a series. If people would rather watch an episode of the original, what's the point.
Exactly. No comic timing whatsoever & rushed. Just production line comedy nowadays. Reminded me of the American comedies, with constant shots of the outside of the prison too. CRAP!
I just watched it ,did we see the same program it was shite ,unfunny ,poor impersanations and constant laughter track why??????? The lovies will love it
Same here. Absolute garbage, Kevin Bishop was right! Only the BBC could come up with this tripe and pass it off as comedy. Dreadful PC rubbish not even close to the original.
Kevin is great and love his honesty. But gawd that moustache is awful on him. Often really good looking men as well as some women can't cope and do everything to make themselves look unattractive. Angela Lansbury was another. Proper hair and makefup she was stunning. But she spent most of her career looking dowdy and frumpy. A fine actress but could have been so much more. Kevin ..... shave that thing. You just look like your hiding.
For Heaven sake i just watched the new Comedy serise of Porridge on the BBC IPlayer, Nothing wrong with the comedy serise, For those who just have watched 15 minutes of the Comedy serise and switched over, should just give it a chance, it not meant to be base on the original serise, Times have change and prison security have been tighten with computers and CCTV techonology, this isnt 1973, This is base on the Ronnie Barker character Norman Stanley Fletcher granson who committed Cyber Crime and sentence to Prison for 5 years, A message to fans of the original comedy serise please before judging it book by it cover, why not watch the six episodes before making your final judgement.
iSuRRendeReDuK, So you watched 15 minutes of the episode of Porridge and thought it was shit. Have you seen the complete 6 episode then?? my god nobody ever give anything a chance thease days.
I just finished watching the series, - I thought it was great too. I hope there's more, as long as the makers ignore the knee-jerk "it's a remake, so can't be good" brigade!
First of all, Manchester and Salford are two different cities. Do your research, Kev...I’m sorry, but someone has to say it. Being born and raised in Manchester, I’m sick and tired of people saying Salford is in Manchester! How many times? I’ll speak up so the idiots at the back can hear me. SALFORD AND MANCHESTER ARE TWO DIFFERENT CITIES!!! Is that clear enough now? Good! Thank you...
The original porridge was amazing brilliantly written brilliantly acted my favourite. The 2017 "porridge" is terrible not funny hammy acting shit script.
I thought it was surprisingly alright.
Bishop did a good job on Ronnie Barkers mannerisms.
Did you watch the same programme as us, or were you watching it through beer goggles!
Didn't like 1st episode but persevered and thought it was good. Once Bishop went from an impression to mannerisms I liked him. Some supporting character a bit dodgy but worth another series. Only Fools wasn't an instant hit. it took time.
At least he was completely honest about it!
As I read somewere...this isnt porrige its granola
I thought it was a nice touch giving Fletch's cellmate the name "Lotterby".
i can sense 2Ds presence
Jim Hawkins From Muppet Treasure Island
After seeing all the celebrity impressions he’s done, it’s kinda weird to hear his actual voice🤯

he is right it is a disaster pi...es all over the originals memory
Porridge is a classic. This dodgy excuse for a show is like one of those experimental breakfast cereals, that appears for a short time, then thankfully disappears
I enjoyed it.
Anybody else here think he looks like Loadsamoney?
Love the fact people say it's shit and they haven't even watched it!
I watched it and it was Shit!

Porridge.? more like Ready break
Not even ready brek either. Ready brek at least fills you up!
I am a huge fan of the original series but will give this a try anyway!
Why didn't they make a new series of goodnightsweetheart or are you being served I loved them but want did we get porridge
Started watching the 1st episode and could not watch anymore as I am a trditionalist and the original was far better and funnier
I forgot all about this
Lol! It most certainly isn't a disaster - it's great, i love it!
I just watched it ,did we see the same program it was shite ,unfunny ,poor impersanations and constant laughter track why???????
The lovies will love it
Up to you, i enjoyed it.
Same here. Absolute garbage, Kevin Bishop was right! Only the BBC could come up with this tripe and pass it off as comedy. Dreadful PC rubbish not even close to the original.
Oh, right! Well, i feel such a fool - thanks for pointing that out - what would i have done without your guidance? and you put it so nicely!
Shill.
BBC, how the mighty have fallen
It was criminaly bad. He should go to prison for 5 years.
Kevin is great and love his honesty. But gawd that moustache is awful on him. Often really good looking men as well as some women can't cope and do everything to make themselves look unattractive. We did it was shite

I watched it all and thought it was really good. DO NOT compare it to the original
@@scottpeacock5492 I''ve watched all seven episodes and yes, it's shite. It's not a patch on the original Porridge.
Great series !! Some great acting too.
yip he is so right. Utter drivel.........
Can’t outdo Ronnie Barker
I liked it
It was a disaster.
Tried to make it too modern.

Yeah👍two equally avoidable cities.
Not Porridge
more like fucking gruel........... leave the classics alone .
Absolute sacrilege. I hope they are all ashamed of themselves for remaking this classic.
HAWKINS!
He's right...it's a complete disaster. Dear God poor old Ronnie will be spinning in his grave !
The original porridge was amazing brilliantly written brilliantly acted my favourite. The 2017 "porridge" is terrible not funny hammy acting shit script.
A total and utter mockery of the original 1970s sitcom.
Interview is funnier then the series
It is definitely a disaster! Watching an episode now and it's terrible
Yes it was bollocks and not worth watching
Garbage, garbage, garbage. Some things should never be remade.
BBC should be ashamed to put this crap on tv acting awful jokes not funny and just shows how far BBC gone down the snowflake road
BBC has no shame!
He's right - it IS a disaster, in fact an utter piece of shit.
Box-ticking with the cast ( black prison officer, tick, and it's a female, tick..)
He was joking.
It was rubbish
