    In this installment of SPEEDRUN EXPLAINED, we go over how a top speedrunner for Half-Life (and former world record holder), KaNanga, beats the game in 26 minutes. This run is brutally fast paced, utilizing the litany of options you have with Goldsource Engine (the Source Engine's predecessor) movement, such as bunnyhopping, air strafing, jumpbugs, edgebugs, and much more. In addition to that, this run contains some sizable skips: some as simple as climbing and jumping a barrier, and some as wild as clipping through solid walls.

      Half-Life's tagline when being promoted during its release was "Run. Think. Shoot. Live." they probably should have added a few more things like "Strafe. Jump. Slide that object really fast. Blow yourself up. Jam yourself into that door. Slow down your Framerate."

      What makes it more impressive is the fact that most of this time optimization isn't even possible in the retail steam version due to bug fixes and is only possible in the day 1 WON build, which goes to show how much all of this depends on small minute details

    34:40 that infinite health door also works with NPCs. I recall seeing bloopers of a Half-Life speedrun before where that HECU grunt got stuck on the door instead of the player, and their health went insanely high and basically unkillable that the speedrunner had to end the run lol

    • @akuvisuri
      @akuvisuri Год назад +53

      That is why the door works that way. The guard you are supposed to get to the door to open it can get stuck on it, and in early development often ended up getting stuck and dying to it. And since that guard is the only entity that can open that door, that particular guard dying prompts game over. So even if the door was opened by him, if the guard then got stuck and died, the game ended. Instead of the developers figuring out whats wrong with the door collision, they just made the door heal you if you get stuck on it instead of hurting you.

      The sentence seems to suggest that the conclusion drawn from previous information is that the series of events or actions (referred to as "this entire run") is not insignificant, and is characterized by precise or well-coordinated actions ("tight movement"). The sentence structure and use of double negative can make it a bit tricky to interpret, but it essentially emphasizes the importance and precision of the actions or events being described.
      The sentence "That implies this entire run isn't nearly nothing but tight movement" can be simplified and made grammatically clearer. A possible rephrasing could be:
      "This implies that the entire run is more than just precise movement."
      This revised sentence is simpler and more direct. It removes the double negative ("isn't nearly nothing") and clearly states that the 'entire run' is significant and characterized by its precise or coordinated movement.

      I also would be too scared to move forward sometimes and would quit out all the time mid fight.
      23 min would just seem absolutely impossible to 7 year old me.
      Even as an adult I'm probably gonna need at least a couple days unless I just sit there and play straight through without sleep. This is coming from someone who has played through the game fully at least a dozen times and partially quite a few times.

      It took me 4 months to beat Half-Life the first time. This was primarily because of two factors:
      1) The minimum RAM was 64MB for the DOS version, and I only had 48MB, which lead to incredible lag especially when loading a save (took over 45 seconds to quick load!).
      2) I kept repeating scenes that were fun, especially big chaotic fights with soldiers and aliens -- I loved how the fights were different every time!

    i'd basically given up on speedrunning videos on youtube, but i clicked this one as i've been re-playing half-life. you've really mastered this style of hyper-annotated and factual, yet casual like a sportscast... it's breathed new life into the genre of speedrunning content for me. this is my first time seeing your channel, and i'm only a third into this video, but this is some quality content. really refreshing. many other channels simply commentate on the run, which is technically correct, but you add a good sense of humor to it - great writing and delivery - you could probably make it as a comic. densely packed with information, but taking the necessary time to slow certain elements without (frequent) pauses to keep the pace of the run. it's a step above what i've been seeing from other youtubers who cover this topic, so i'll subscribe and check your back catalog!

      @@CoralCopperHead I'm sorry you feel that way, however if you do, I'd venture that the message isn't meant for you, and that's great!
      IMO the message is there for people to view it and draw from it what they need in the moment - everything's solid: "weird, sappy message huh? Dunno what that's all about - back to the run!" but if you're in a tough place and/or time, it can be a nice little bit of positivity that feels more genuine than many others I've heard or seen on RUclips.
      YMMV, have a great day.

    • @c146w
      @c146w 11 месяцев назад

      @@CoralCopperHead I think you're placing too much emphasis on the source and not enough on the recipient. While you may hear platitudes and bad advice, consider that others may hear and interpret a genuine sense of positivity and recognition of their problems by someone else, which can go a long way just by itself.
      If you or someone sees it as platitudes and bad advice (which it may be, I'm not a mental health professional) then view it as such and continue. As someone who's dealt with chronic, treatment-resistant depression my entire adult life of almost two decades, I find it to be a nice bit of positivity and a small highlight of each video. I also view it in the context of the small amount of time and effort it takes him, which is more than many other creators I watch, being well worth it if even a handful of people hear it and can be put at ease or in a better mood, if even only slightly. The small number (I would imagine) of people who would actually find it malicious or damaging is likely well outweighed by those that appreciate and enjoy it.
      It's just a few seconds of time and some words, take from it and interpret it how you will, but just realize that your takeaway is not necessarily that of the next person; while you find a platitude others may find empathy. True or not, if it makes them feel better, what's really the harm? Listen again carefully next time, if you care to - I would not ascribe the message to be "stop feeling bad" but rather carefully worded to say to the effect of "This isn't permanent and things will get better, so don't get bogged down wallowing in it, and don't define yourself by it". That's more nuanced and less reductive than "stop feeling bad" IMO.

    00:28 🏃 Speedruns of Half-Life begin in the second chapter, skipping the tram ride, using bunnyhopping and strafing techniques to move faster than normal walking speed.
    01:25 🎮 "Scriptless" speedruns of Half-Life only allow human inputs, no scripts; techniques like air strafing and bunnyhopping boost speed.
    03:30 🎮 Runners use the World Opponent Network (WON) version of the game due to its higher speed cap compared to the Steam version.
    04:03 💣 In the speedrun, players aim for Easy difficulty for faster completion due to a skip that was once believed possible only on Hard.
    05:28 🕹 Manipulating FPS to open doors earlier, using specific movements and triggers, helps skip dialogue and interactions, saving time.
    06:21 🎮 Precision and positioning with NPCs in the test chamber area assist in optimizing speed by manipulating their movements.
    08:17 🚀 Advanced techniques like object boosts, jumpbugs, and precise positioning exploit game mechanics to gain speed and skip sections.
    10:47 🔫 In-game glitches and precise actions allow skipping sections and manipulating NPCs to save time and avoid hindrances.
    12:46 🧨 Precision grenade usage to prevent NPCs from blocking progression and strategic health management are crucial for speed.
    13:49 🕹 Advanced movement techniques like edgebugs and duck taps help minimize fall damage and navigate complex environments efficiently.
    15:14 🎮 Speedrunning tricks involve exploiting game mechanics, like bypassing rooms and using shortcuts to progress faster.
    16:39 🌊 "Sharking" in Half-Life involves using movement techniques in water to maintain velocity and gain speed.
    18:05 🚆 Skipping game chapters by creatively maneuvering around intended obstacles is a common speedrunning strategy.
    20:53 💥 Mastering bunnyhopping and object boosts in Half-Life helps maintain speed and bypass challenges efficiently.
    23:17 🔫 Health and armor management are critical in executing precise maneuvers and glitches for optimal speedruns.
    25:39 🕹 Precision and timing are essential for executing advanced tricks like clipping through walls to save time.
    28:28 🔄 Manipulating game triggers and using unconventional methods aid in sequence-breaking and speed enhancement.
    29:32 💣 Utilizing explosives and speed techniques for clipping through surfaces optimizes traversal and progression.
    30:39 🚪 Strategies like saveloading, AI manipulation, and ammo duplication help navigate levels and manage encounters efficiently.
    31:39 🏃‍♂ Speedrunners use a scientist to open a door by leading them across the level, performing armor boosts, and utilizing gauss rifle tricks.
    32:38 🚀 Utilizing gauss boosts, remote explosives, and precise movements, speedrunners navigate terrains and avoid enemies efficiently.
    34:00 💥 Using various boosts, speedrunners manage health, deal with enemies, and optimize movement through obstacles.
    35:27 🌊 Speedrunners employ underwater techniques, 'nade boosts, and weapon strategies to overcome obstacles and enemies.
    37:25 🔥 Advanced skips and manipulations allow speedrunners to bypass major sections, saving considerable time in the game.
    38:53 🌀 Using FPS manipulation, audio cues, and game glitches, speedrunners optimize boss fights and map transitions.
    41:53 🧩 Creative use of explosives, boosts, and skips helps speedrunners leap through challenging segments.
    43:23 ⚡ Skillful manipulation of boss mechanics and weapon switching optimizes the final showdown, concluding the speedrun.

    • @fonesrphunny7242
      @fonesrphunny7242 10 месяцев назад

      This is a segmented run. Says so in the intro and there is a super obvious load in the trash compactor.
      And while the category is called "script less", it uses precise FPS values, which you won't get through normal gameplay, so some sort of script has been used (even if it's just some "bind" command)

    • @lachyoo
      @lachyoo 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@fonesrphunny7242 the load in trash compactor wasn't one of the segments lol. all of apprehension if not more was a segment. binds arent scripts. you can bind "fps_max 20" just like +duck or +attack or any other regular action whereas a script is multiple actions with alias commands and wait commands in your autoexec outside of the game entirely.

It seems it would work best for speedruns in the 15-25 min category in terms of ideal pacing. Further credit to you in that regard. You have a clear voice and ennuciation that matches the action of the run very well. This video and the speedrun documentary on God of War are the best speedrun deep dives I've seen.
