Avant-garde fashion designers produce beautiful garments that push the boundaries of conventional taste. In many ways, avant-garde pushes back against the trends in mainstream fashion in an attempt to create work that is more thoughtful and of a higher quality.
With its emphasis on silhouette, drapery, asymmetry and unique textures, avant-garde fashion yields some of the most creative garments we see today.
Designers and brands featured (partial list):
Yohji Yamamoto / Y-3, Comme des Garçons, Rick Owens, Junya Watanabe, Alexander McQueen, Thom Krom

This is one of the most interesting RUclips videos I have seen in the last 10 years
When I went to Fashion College, on day one we were told, ''Fashion is not for everybody.'' I am more interested in Avant-Garde Fashion now. Only people who understands the creativity of Designer will buy it.
yes...true...
I fucking love Avant Garde fashion. Margiela, Ann D, Rick Owens, Yohji, etc.
I see Avant-Garde as a spirit, an attitude, a fearless approach towards design, opinions and life, and I celebrate it. Whether we buy a piece from a designer or not can depend on many things, but the spirit is desperately needed in Fashion world today. I certainly would love to learn more and get inspired.
Absolutely!
theres nothing fearless about weaving materials together my child
I have to say, I disagree with your assessment of color. Where I do agree is that color should be one of he final focuses..texture and shape and construction/deconstruction over color in my opinion. But I don't think that avant garde means an abandonment of color. Comme des garcon, margiela, raf, Walter can bierondonck, dries can noten, harder Ackerman all use color superbly and their clothes are sufficiently and exceedingly avant garde
McConnell Wade sweet, yeah thanks for making this video!
Yesss!!! I totally agree. Since when is avant guard minimal in shape color etc. look at CDG shows, those aren’t always plain black and white collections - and they are FARRRR FROM MINIMAL. Minimal is completely different.
Agreed. Even with YY, so many of his pieces involve some kind of print design that gives an artistic splash of color to an otherwise monochrome outfit, especially when it comes to his diffusion lines.
Excellent presentation. I'm a big fan of Yohji Yamamoto. One thing to keep in mind is buying a piece of clothing, one will never see it again, made for that one season, not for the masses which I think is pretty amazing!
This was exactly the kind of video and channel I was looking for, please continue, your videos are so enlighting and inspiring
McConnell Wade yessssss!!!🖤
Thank you, this is excelent job.
Glad you like it!
This video was beautifully done. Thank you for this. You made me look at avant-garde fashion in a new way.
One of the best video essays I've seen in a while. Keep on doing ya thing man!
Fantastic video, I love the structure and overall aesthetic of this video, and I feel you hit a lot of key points precisely. Love it, keep making more.
love love your take on this. great video.
More cheaper designers...odeur, zam barrett, delusion, lentrian...cool shops like victims store, orimono..and don't forget to scour sales at yoox, century 21, and farfetch!
Thank you for such great video !
Keep up the good work.
Really cool, didn't know anything about avant-garde before this. I like the idea of affordability being a mental construct. Interesting way to think. Great examples throughout the video!
Your videos are giving a lot of interesting information to think about, keep up the great work on this chanel!
brilliant video. deserves far more views.
Great and inspirational video
This was needed.
fantastic video!
I love some of these quotes, thank you. I also appreciate you listing designers, as it is surely helpful while I experiment with adding Avant-garde concepts to my wardrobe.
Yeah, avant garde is a bit challenging for beginners to get started, glad the list was helpful.
This might be my favorite video on the internet

Amazing video
Am only a few minutes in and am really impressed with the whole quality of this video. Have subbed and hope to see more from you and that you are still making videos (from a comment I just saw saying to keep making videos)🖤
McConnell Wade great thank you. What do you normally do in your day job, I was telling my husband that your film could have been one of those short films you see at the beginning of a fashion movie, like I don’t know, The Hermitage or for fun, Devil Wears Prada II or something :-D ... so great how you credited everyone and all the clips you used - really pro stuff. What is your day job?
McConnell Wade Brilliant👍🏼
yohji yamamoto ,black cdg (rei kawakubo),ann demeulemeester and rick owens are the best avant garde designer
Wow, this just entirely made me realise that I have a very bad taste in fashion. I always thought this colour palette were beautiful oh $20, put that in my wadrobe. I never sat down and think throughly about my wadrobe. Usually sale and it looks pretty I place inside my wadrobe. Zara or HnM are defnitely the version of walmart of high end designers which is pretty sad actually... I just never sat down and think about having to thoroughly scan through your clothing pieces... looking at it now, my favourite pieces are the ones that are expensive and in need for alot of saving of money you awake me bro about my fashion pieces.... wow... haha great video essay by the way.
Well said ♥️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Video just winding up now where the quotes are coming up on the screen and you are reading from them.. this wasn’t a video, it was a film🖤
Beautifully made video
Thank you :)
Andrea Ya’aqov is a favorite of mines, discovered the brand 4 years ago and bought a hoodie at the time... I just bought a wool coat by them not too long ago! I hope they get more exposure
Yes! Great brand.
I need to mine tmrw. Bro we gotta go find different mining locations, then we meet at the spot, then we’re like, hey Danny!
bravo bravo bravo
hmmmmm tbh avant garde looks can be made without having to completely break the bank. There are many designers out these days who make avant garde styled clothes at decents prices. Also when i was younger I found alot of stuff in thrift shops. If you are truly avant garde you don’t need big named designers 😉
Totally! Thrifting is great for building an avant garde wardrobe. More decently priced designers in the past few years as well! Good time to get into the style.
Very well constructed video, there is such a lack of acknowledgment for these designers for their artistic vision
1:07 Dude, literally i remembered the incredibles movie's character xD
so many people confuse avant garde and couture fashion with main stream day to day fashion and i just wish to teach people about it but when i do they say im taking things too seriously and that its just goofy
Yeah, that's always a problem with niche interests. Fortuunately, with the internet we can explore these things and find other like minded people online!
Nice McConell ! Looking forward to see more sick content
Nice video 🤔
take me as a model I'd love to
Pleaaaase more videos
@@kinowearofficial No worries. This is seriously good stuff. Please take your time.
So is Japan one of the best fashion capital for avant garde ? Just curious..
I bought some Y-3 shoes 3 years ago and I have worn them pretty much every day to my high school and they are still in good condition so it was worth the $300
End statement can be stronger
Great video. Informative, and perfect. Just took a quiz to figure out a sense of my fashion style since I enjoy everything and I'd like to pin point any idea. Turns out my dominant style is Avant-Garde and my combination style is whimsical, this video had me gasping, "Oh God...this is true" Thank you for posting this piece.
this video seems like an ad of YohjiYamamoto
Price relatively fair to whom?
Not because you can afford it mean you should. I do love the works of Owens, Iris, and others but I wouldn't pay that price for clothes in general.
Yeah, it's understandable. You have to work with whatever budget you have. Just trying to give people a different perspective since we're all so normalized to fast fashion.
Prepare yourself to go down the fashion rabbit hole. There is no turning back now
Wonder what clothing brand 1:21 was
That's Y-3
what is the music? please!

Recently, ive been getting interested in fashion a subject that somehow always seemed to me as a extremely superficial, vain thing. And its been because of the work of this avant-garde designers, love everything with that twist from techwear related to more traditional approach like the karasazu soku. But as much as i like those, i still think my sense of fashion its a little too basic , to try one of these things in some kind of a budget
hi everyone pls share your fashion knowledge with me and link me to some cool videos/articles 😭
go see un mere man its really cool and new
I can't even afford Zara lol
1:12 was that HAYLEY WILLIAMS?????
EBAY ©️™️
Amatuer. its basically do what you want. its not deep
this video was good but please leave out the hip hop cringey bullshit
I didn't enjoy this!
I was watching so interested until i saw rappers......tacky!! I'm surprised you did not include the kardashins....lol . Clearly by mixing Yohji and some guy called asap rocky you have no idea what you are doing........I doubt very much Yohji or Rei Kawakubo would want to be associated with your rappers.....
Keep up the good contents
