💬Plot summary:

This show is SO good it's actually crazy xD The characters are all so intriguing and multi faceted. The emperor is the most clever and scare emperor i've seen in any show, like i believe 100% that he is leading the country. And i love how all the conflicts and situations are not simply black & white, like the whole situation with Lin Gong and the Lin family, it's really sad and Lin Gong was obviously a lovely family member, but the assassination really came and bit him in the back, truly your actions have consequenses. Can't wait to watch the rest of this show!

The son probably feel he need to take these risks to grant power to protect the family. He even say it to his sister what is the power of the family name if you can't even protect a love one.

I like the part when the emperor and FX first met and spent time together. Like father like son, and FX even played with the emperor's bows and arrows as if they were toys. So cute. And the emperor dressed up properly for the very first time.

Let's be honest, this drama could do without any romance. I fast forward their so-called romance when it comes on. It's such a solid storyline that if they must, they can keep 'romance' till the last episodes... and with a stronger female lead like the fighter girl he met later, not Waner.

It doesn't matter if they are good or bad. I love how this show the consequences of someone dying whether it was the box assassin who still have the boy (if he had known that he die) to moan for him. Whether it was just a guard. And in this episode even if the person deserve to die. He still have an older brother, a younger sister, and a father who love him. Just as even if Fan Xian did something bad, there will be a ton on his side that will totally cover up for him.

To get around the Chinese Television Administration, they made some modifications while transforming the novel into this play. Some of the original stories were just too wild to be shown in a public stage, and some of the plots were rather complicated, so they made it easier to understand. IMHO, the original story is much more in-depth than this reducted version. You should definitely check it out if you can.

The subtitles go by so fast even when there is no long conversation... I have to rewind this thing about 3-4 times to try read... but thanks for the subs!

Also because chinese sometimes is really dense two words could meant a bunch of things. Look at the poem, it probably easier/faster to say those 7 words (per line), and each words just has one syllable. While English translation is full of texts. Also because the grammar in Chinese probably way more simplistic, so when you translate in English. You had to add a bunch of things in to have it make sense.
The one syllable thing is probably why they talk so fast.

Not really, she is a spy. Which probably already have a death penalty associate with it if she wasn't such a high value person. Also he had loyalty to the Lin's family and probably had tie with both the older and younger Lin. The prime minister is probably as cold hearted as the next person but he just looking out for his family. And his son is probably getting tangle in this mess too probably trying to look out for his family. When you sign up to be a spy, well you sort of signing up for this. I see people who far more evil than this guy. But the way you feel is probably a testament to the writer's ability to make you care about the spy character.

Heya, so happy that my Chinese lessons have finally paid off. So the guy they’re talking about is called Gong Dian宫典, with Gong 宫being is last name. Fan Xian is asking whether he has any friends and when the eunuch confirms that, he jokes that they must probably call him Lao Gong. This Lao 老 means old, and can be used (mainly by older people) to call one’s close/old friends, so his friends would call him “Old Gong 老宫”. Lao Gong also sounds exactly like 老公 (notice that the second character is different), which is how one would address one’s husband. So by calling him Lao Gong, it sounds like they’re calling him their husband, hence taking advantage of him.
