    Bernadette, I love your videos. I decided I wanted to get a Baritone ukulele to go along with my other ukuleles. I found an absolute gem, a 1961 Gibson Baritone that is in near mint condition. I received it yesterday and I am infatuated and can't wait to learn how to play it. The Ohana with the curved plastic back is very reminiscent or similar to the parabolic shape of the back of Ovation guitars. Hearing you play the Ohana it sure sounded sweet! The 8 string sounded really cool as well. By the way, my wife and I are in our 60's and we both take ukulele lessons every Saturday morning. Although we take separate lessons our teacher does get us jamming together and learning some songs together. Typically I'll play the chords and my wife plucks out the notes. We enjoy playing the ukes. I truly enjoy watching your videos. You seem to talk to me, not at me. By the way, I bought my wife one of your UKU LELE tee-shirts off your merch site. Thanks again!

    • @stephenbouchelle7706
      @stephenbouchelle7706 4 года назад

      Bernadette Teaches Music How nice to hear from you. I do enjoy your channel. The tuning is an open C tuning and is similar to open tunings on guitar such as Open - D or G or C. Open D (DADF#AD) and G (DGDGBD) are pretty common guitar tunings for blues and slide guitar - Bob Dylan also did a lot of Blood On The Tracks in open D. I like open C on guitar (CGCGCE), so I tried it on the baritone uke. It does well for blues but also for British Isles folky stuff. That said, I mostly improvise on any instruments I play. Something I appreciate about your channel is the content to work on some real repertoire. I like both low and high G on my regular tuned tenors. Again, thanks for your work and for saying Hi. Stephen

I like the size and heft when I hold it. I like that it forces it me to practice more now on at least two ukes a day, to keep the chords straight between the GCEA and DGBE tunings. Hi Bernadette, I have three Baritones all tuned differently one from another. One is made from bamboo and were only available from a Ukulele club in Moseley in the Midlands here in the UK. I have it tuned according to a video I saw on RUclips. I also have two Kala baritones. One I tune with a special stringset to low G tuning and one is standard baritone DGBE I have tuned that one up two whole tones higher that standard from time to time as worth tell me their strings will stand this and for some songs I find it more comfortable to sing to. So four possible tunings in all. The low G tuning makes it easier in a group situation than trying to work out the different chord shapes in my head. Because I'm an old polar bear and I don't think too quick anymore 🤔🤣

    Hi Bernadette, I have 2 baritones: the caramel ebony and a luth-uke. I tuned the luth uke with a high D and the caramel with a low D. I love them both! I also had a 8 strings tenor but I changed it to 4 strings because I felt that it was very hard to press 8 strings, especially bar chords, and therefore i never played it. What I love especially about the baritone is that it allows me to change key easily, because I'm a singer and when some songs are out of my voice range I just grab the baritone and play the same chord shapes as the gcea uke but it changes the key without me having to think about transposing.

    • @BernadetteTeachesMusic
      @BernadetteTeachesMusic  4 года назад

      Hi Magali! 👋🏼
      (I love your name, by the way)
      That is so clever. You’re right. Having both ukes makes it super easy to switch key.
      Which one do you like better? Your low D or high D?

    • @magaliberal
      @magaliberal 4 года назад +1

      @@BernadetteTeachesMusic I really love both. It depends on the songs. I like to play classical music sometimes and then I do it with the high D luth uke, that way I can follow gcea tabs and it has that baroque sound that makes it really interesting. I prefer the low D for strumming and singing. And thanks for the name, it's sweet of you to say so! (it comes from the latin word margarita that means pearl.)

    • @magaliberal
      @magaliberal 4 года назад

      @@BernadetteTeachesMusic I started with books, the first one I recommend because it's pretty easy is the Classic ukulele by Javier Marco
      le Ukulele Classique: Pièces faciles de Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, ainsi que d'autres compositeurs www.amazon.fr/dp/1500116777/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_zTItEbB0JYZZK
      Another good book : John King, the classical ukulele and of course Ukulele Mike's books.
      But I also find great tabs on rockclass101.com and from a guy named Colin Tribe (he has a RUclips channel) who has arranged a huge amount of songs and I buy them from him directly. Currently i'm working on Clair de lune from Debussy and the Sarabande from Haendel. It's challenging but I get better every day and I'm learning so much about music that way ! Going back to strumming songs feels so easy after that!

    Oh how I adore the sound of the 8 string. About 6 months ago I wanted to buy a baritone. I thought I had chosen one and then went to a local store that had a Kala 8 string baritone. The moment I played it my heart felt full. I went back to try the 4 string and said nope. I bought the Kala and haven't looked back (and supported my local store). The sound it magnificent. I am a beginner so getting my brain to switch chord shapes is a challenge but I'm working it. Thank you for this comparison and for sharing the 8 string.

    Hello Bernadette, I love this demo of Baritone Ukuleles. I am a beginner and have followed your 30-day challenge with my Enya Concert. Now that I have heard you play those baritones, I need to get one! I particularly like the Ohana Baritone Ukulele (Model No. BK-70RB). I have been looking everywhere for it online here in Canada but nobody has it in stock anymore. Do you know if Ohana still makes that beautiful model??? It is so beautiful, it would be a shame if it had been discontinued...also, why doesn't Enya make Baritones??? Thank you so much for your great teaching! Thanks to you, I have discovered a new passion at 65 years young! Please keep Baritone tutorials coming!

    Hi Bernadette , thanks for the baritone reviews , my favorite would have to be the Lanikai with spruce top , the spruce seems to resonate and blend the tones so much better. I think we are going to see a huge year for baritone ukuleles , and a lot with built-in sound effects , guitars too.
    It only makes sense to evolve it that direction , kind of minimalist thing and take where you go and not need an amp for camp fireside play or just to travel with and park somewhere and play !! , Take care , thanks again , Gary 

      Read my comments to Bernadette, you might find them useful. Worth strings make a suitable set for tuning standard and also low G and high g. Living water strings will sell you a custom set for Gcea or gcea. Also find a tenor with a radiused fretboard and a broad nut width. I have large paws and have only just found a long neck concert that I can play. The Hawaiian makers make models with 38mm nut width. Even us polar bears can handle that. Edit: I have been informed by Bonanza Ukuleles that they make 38mm nut Ukes as standard now and for a first Ukulele their models would be much more affordable than say, a Kanile'a.

      @@amberyooper all Cocobolo ukuleles have a 12inch radius and I believe that the Godin multiuke has a radius fretboard too. Bonanza might do them to order I think and some of the individual luthiers do or will. On the budget side and for purposes of seeing how you feel the Enya nova u is raised and reasonably priced. Hope this helps.

I have a baritone resonator with steel strings from barebones folk instruments from New Zealand - so rich in tone, and a Gold Tone banjolele which similarly has steel strings. Between the two, any music is great.

    I bought Makala baritone just to add that size to my collection. It was very cheap and plain looking, tone was too deep compared with other ukes I have and tbh, I didn't like it at all. Just received a Baritone ukulele for Christmas 2019. The buyer was a novice, not knowing what to buy, only the least expensive...it's a Makala, cost was about $90 (carrying case not included). I'm enjoying the deep sound, but I'm just having trouble switching between the soprano to the baritone chords because the finger chords are different and I need to memorize a different set of chords for the baritone. The first song I learned was La Bamba (3 chords). I bought a song book for the Baritone ukulele...popular songs with only 3 chords. I need to practice learning more chords and also chord switching. I understand there are different ways to make the C chord, possible making it simpler to jump from a Gb to a C. I also have not explored the world of "picking" since I don't have long finger nails, only fat fingers. I'm having sweet fun with my new Berry.

    • @BernadetteTeachesMusic
      @BernadetteTeachesMusic  4 года назад

      Eva Gall hi Eva!! Yes, the Makala is the least expensive but I have heard lots of people are happy with it! It is tricky to switch from soprano to baritone, but it gets easier when, like you said, we memorize chords.

    Cool video! Went into the local music store on Valentine's Day to order some strings, and I was trying out the ukes in the store. Their baritones didn't feel as big as my tenor (my tenor is much wider at the nut), so I didn't even realize at first that they weren't just low G tenors. I keep thinking about one of the used Baris they had there and your upcoming Bari challenge. Lol The price was really good, but I have to keep reminding myself that I'm currently broke. Still, it was quite a revelation that the baritone wasn't necessarily too big for my hands.

    2da. Cuerda = Si 4
    3ra. Cuerda= Sol 3
    4ta. Cuerda = Re 4 (con la colocación de la 3er. Cuerda de la guitarra)
    Aunque al principio me costó y creía que no iba a ser posible, en un término de aprox. 12 horas, logré una afinación más presisa y un tensado más consistente)

He has been learning on a Tenor Uke with Baritone strings made for tenors, but since he has been committing to practicing and going to lessons, we're thinking about an upgrade. I'm wondering which of these (or other!) baritones would be the easiest, low action, for very little fingers? (Like the Flight travel uke in Soprano ❤). Thanks for any suggestions!
