  • Recently I bought a Chinese low C bass clarinet for $500 on eBay. This video shows some of the work I had to do to get it to play well.

    Perhaps it's an "after-hours-made-at-the-factory" which produces the bodies and keys of the Lyrique 925C Low C Bass designed by Tom Ridenour? Unlike the Ridenour Lyrique line, the quality control in the copies isn't there, of course, and , the pads and cork were probably awful for you to work over, but that design is amazing. Tom was the designer for Leblanc and Selmer-Conn bought Leblanc, so the Selmers of today tend to be to his acoustical design and sound gorgeous. You did a fantastic job making that bass play and sound wonderful.
    *edit - added a bit to be certain that it was clear that I meant that it was the Bass which you performed the miracle on which was under par, and not the Ridenour products.

      Once you've made the mold, all you need do is push the button to produce another copy. Its the inferior materials and lack of fine tuning that keeps the price so low. Fine if you have the knowledge and ability to make the precision after stamping adjustments. But most of us, aren't technicians.

    I bought an Eb for £150 new. It was half price from Germany. Got a decent mouthpiece and barrel plus Leblanc bell. Altered the keys a bit to fit my fingers. Some keys too close. It plays nicely in tune so l am pleased.. l also fixed up the the Vito Alto that had a crack near the mid socket joint. Super glue plus a modified marine quality ring clamp. Plays well. I overcame the very slight play in the tenon by using heat shrink tube of appropriate size.. l love that tool you have for the tone holes. Where could l get one please. Many thanks. Andrew

  • @MissTEO1
    @MissTEO1 4 года назад +2

    Is that a DIY tool you used to sand the tone holes? If so, what did you use to make it and would it work on wood? Just did my first clarinet overhaul but one of the tone holes has minor Imperfections.

    • @Jared_De_Leon
      @Jared_De_Leon  4 года назад +1

      It’s a stone bit from a rotary tool. I talk more about it in my video where I fix my G clarinet. Yeah you can use it on any material, but you want to fill in the chip with superglue and wood dust, which is what you see me doing to the thumb hole. You can also buy tonehole files but they’re insanely expensive and don’t work any better.

  • @krane15
    @krane15 3 года назад

    So what is the cost of the work you put into getting it to a playable level, since that represents to true cost of buying a clarinet like this. Also, materials -- are the keys/pads so soft they will need constant adjustments and/or replacement to keep the instrument in working order.

    Thanks for that excellent review. I'm interested in these because I could recommend one to a colleague who needs a new one. Would you say the keywork is as solid (once adjusted) as with a Ridenour or Kessler?
    There are "Moresky" labeled basses on Aliexpress for 800-900$ that seem similiar to Kessler. I wonder if there are really worse Chinese basses, but it seems lime they can be good instruments (when adjusted correctly..!)
