  • In this video Alastair Penman, top UK Woodwind Pro, discusses and demonstrates the amazing Yamaha YCL-221 Bass Clarinet, available via:
    www.dawkes.co....
This lightweight ABS bass clarinet is ideal for the intermediate clarinettist wishing to expand their skills within an orchestra or band. The design quality principles applied from the professional level instrument ensure that this instrument offers the best quality in its class, whilst still remaining affordable.
Many clarinet players wish at sometime to move onto a harmony instrument but are unsure as to how hard it could be. The YCL-221IIS makes playing the bass clarinet very easy due to its lightweight ABS body and a very good mouthpiece set-up. Also it is supplied with a lightweight case which is extremely durable and portable.

I have owned a Yamaha 221-ii since 2008. It is a very good backup to my professional bass clarinet (Selmer).
The Yamaha is tuned a bit sharp (depending where you live), but extending the neck and middle joint addresses that.
The register mechanism *must* be properly adjusted otherwise going over the break is not perfectly smooth.
the keywork is ergonomic (for me) and sturdy. It is extremely important to use cork grease before assembling it and to grab it properly as to not to apply pressure on the rods. If treated properly it stays in adjustment for very long periods of time.
I found the sound quality to be very good, and as mentioned in the video, it is a free blowing and playing it is rather effortless not to mention fun.
To get better sound, a very steep price increase is required, to something like the Buffet 1180 (slightly more refined) or the pro models by Selmer and Buffet which are fantastic.
You have to be an advanced player for it to be the limiting factor.
The included mouthpiece, Yamaha 4Cp, is a very basic student stater and I believe that a dedicated player would outgrow it quickly.

Very interesting review for those who doubt this instrument is worth its price. Thank you.

Which VD mouthpiece are you using?

Apologies I actually made a mistake in this video and I'm playing a Selmer mouthpiece here! On my Bb/A clarinet I use a Vandoren BD5 and on my Eb I use a Vandoren B40, but on bass I'm using a Selmer Concept!
