i had a geo metro automatic and a lot of hills. the timing on shifting up a hill made it struggle so i would do this to force it to be in 1st 2nd and drive (3 speed automatic) to get up easier
Why ? I'm kind of confused on why everybody acts like this guy is dumb like what he's just driving his truck not doing anything out of the ordinary or wrong.
if were talking shoulds, manufacturers should include at least a manual transmission on all base models so at least on trucks that have higher trims with autos, there's the possability of swaping a manual in. on trucks like this thats not possible because i dont believe that chevy made an 07-13 base model 1500 with a manual transmission.
Smerky it's for climbing steep inclines low gears bring more torque, and when ur going down a steep hill you can put it in a lower gear so it coasts slower without using ur brakes as much, to prevent brake failure from overheating them and just running through ur brakes super fast
Yes there is a reason you can "manually " shift an automatic transmission, but in doing so the PCM or power train control module knows your shifting into the next gear and applies the solenoid to move the band to grab the next gear without tearing it up prematurely, when your shifting like in this video, the vehicle is still rolling, causing a premature wear that's caused to the band, and having to replace a $15 dollar part for more than $2,500 to drop the transmission, open the transition up take out that part and put it all back together all because you didn't drive the vehicle properly, just drive an automatic like an automatic and a manual like a manual
Number 1 thing you should never do in an auto if you can select gears is letting off the gas when changing gear!!! Since there's no clutch petal you don't have the ability to disengage the engine from the drivetrain between gear shifts like you would on a manual, and so the differential between the engine rpm (which has decreased since letting off gas) and the rpm of the transmission (which is still spinning fast) will cause a major upset in the car, and result in what is known as engine braking. The effect is that (especially if revved to redline) you will feel the car's weight jolt forwards and act as if being pulled back from behind, it's like slamming on the brakes between gear changes. Imagine sticking your finger in a spinning fan blade only you have to force it to stay in those blades till they slow down, that's pretty much what's happening to your drivetrain.
I noticed that while towing in my truck and it felt like a brake type slowdown as I was not putting any gas inbetween the shifts :O so gas as u shift lol
I have noticed with most automatics you can shift with the gas pedal.. Stay medium to hard on throttle.. Let off a bit and it will shift. Repeat. Throughout gears.
I've seen some tunes to where the tow haul button is reprogrammed to drop it in which ever gear you want for like a 30 or 40 roll, just so you don't risk missing a shift or dropping it in neutral.
@@austinrieck939i did twice, nothing happened. Don’t think everything is so bad. You can do anything but crash your car once and it’ll be fine princess, redline means calm down I’m almost at my limit, not DONT DO IT ILL DIE 🤣

Don’t let off the gas when shifting manually, you can stay in the gas because it’s like it’s in automatic mode but you tell it when to shift like the 6spd transmissions with button shift.
Closest I've come to actually shifting an automatic has come in two cars I know extremely well. Believe it or not, you can control what gear the engine uses by how you move your throttle. Granted, I'm driving old cars, but they can still be controlled without touching the "shifter"

Slim Reaper I press it on when I want to race. for example from a 30 I'm just driving normally and then I press the tow haul and it drops it to first gear and I just then mat it. after I'm done racing I turn it off
when your at 30 it doesn't put it into first gear stock, when your in tow hall mode it just makes the truck's rpms higher in that gear and it downshifts for you automatically
I don't believe there is a problem shifting to 1-2-3 in an auto, although i wouldn't do neutral. The main problem is that it's inefficient as regardless the speed you are coasting the torque converter will still be slipping,so mainly the engine will be sort of free wheeling,no advantage of manual shifting unless you manage to keep the engine rpm way down while maintaining the same speed as it will have in drive. Once i get an auto like 4L60,i will surely do it whatsoever.
DONT BELIEVE ANY of these dumb videos how to drive a automatic like a manual. its all people trashing there vehicles and they dont know it. just drive it like intended or buy what you want.
I would like to know this as well; its not like automatics have low selector gears below D just for show or anything they're meant to be used. Doing it all the time im not so sure about though
TechMaster+ No, yours has whats called a tiptronic shifter and is designed to shift gears more like a manual car. Most cars have this in a mode called sport mode that gives more control to the driver about gear selection.
Okay. So if I put it in first gear with this, will it not be the same as putting it in L in a regular auto? Then you can shift back to drive in both; in mine just by pushing left and in the Silverado's by pushing forward, right? Do they actually operate differently?
Or if you keep your rpms low enough and you know what gear you're in, you can rev that gear out right before red lining, hold it and then lay into the gas to feel the shift happen.
I do the same thing esp pulling a trailer, it increases the shift points in the first 3 most important gears so you can gain speed properly when pulling a load or just launching in general, and not have to buy a programmer to increase it for ya!
i dont know if you have tried this or experienced the same but my truck hits the speed limiter in 2nd gear with a couple hundred rpm left when manual shifting. truck sounds fricken sick man.
Why though? Like why in the fuck would you do this? To feel cool or something i guess?? I mean autos past 06 are gunna shift faster and better than a manual for racing, as well as its just easier. And if your doing it to feel like a manual just get a manual theyre cheaper in most cases
My understanding is that he's not creating any further performance. The only benefit I can find is maybe he's riding a gear longer or shorter before shifting. Like if he wants to blast through a stop light, it's easier to rev 2nd than shift into 3rd. Which in low gears, is not really a big difference in a daily driver, just making more work for himself. But if he could drop a gear, then he could disappear

Your truck you can do what you want with it. But if you want better performance “racing” or “launching”. Try and find an aftermarket performance torque converter and get a better tune. Guaranteed you’ll be faster than any manny out there.
It's fine to coast in neutral doesn't hurt it. But hitting the brakes in neutral is going to fuck you over in brakes, it burns the crap out of your brakes.
My cars got an auto and It has PRND 321 I drive it in 3rd it gives me more power but hurts my gas mileage but I like the more power the faster shifts are nice. 2nd good on hills and 1s good for snow and mud. 1 and 2 are not really driving gears D and 3 are. So in the 4L60E there’s a clutch pack that’s called a overrun clutch pack and when you shift manually like this you do get less clutch slippage and more gear engagement but if you keep doing this you’ll ruin your overrun clutch pack I found this out the hard way 😂 but if you want to keep doing so don’t say I didn’t inform you 😂

I love manuals and all cars i ever had were stick shifts, its cuz its more fun and makes you feel like one with the car and is easier to fix and will always be superior to all car enthusiasts like me❤️ automatics are good too but not as much fun as manuals and have more disadvantages and are used less by car enthusiasts
i thought the numbers meant it wouldn't go higher than that gear? like for example if it was in 3rd gear (set with 3) it wouldn't go to 4th, only 1 2 and 3 edit: so i just realized that he was using it to shift up "faster", but he also puts it in neutral when stopping, wouldn't it just shift itself down? sorry for the dumb first part lol i wasnt thinking
Those are not gears, those are ratios for traction control, to keep the vechicle steady on icy roads, hill starts or downhill. It doesn't just change gears, it recalibrates what the ECU feels safe, so if you keep switching them, that will fuck the transmission up as the ECU will keep reacting.
As a man with a-many gm transmission in the collection for when I break them, You should preach this to the older Trans guys.... older floor shift cars... Modern transmission internals work off the computer and shift digitally. If you want different shift points get a tunable computer or tool to tune if applicable.
Good way to blow it up am i wrong? The increased rpms in 1 2 3 cant be good for it considering those are for increased torque on hills and stuff made fore offroad and low speeds not to mention the wear on the trans?
Please don't do this to your transmissions people. It will shorten the life of them. If you want to do this then it requires modifications to handle it. 1 and 2 are made for towing and hills, snow/ice. Check your manual and it will tell you.
Okay everyone here is a certified RUclips mechanic and they must know everything. Holy fuck who cares if he’s using tow mode with virtually no weight over back wheels and floor it “ you’re gonna break that tranny” yeah? So will using tow mode and hauling a trailer and down shifting or up shifting up a steep hill? You’re point? And what I mean is if that truck is struggling up a hill so you downshift as shown in video there’s a pause then it’s in gear during that pause the truck will have slowed to were that gear will A have a hard time keeping the rpms up B continue to drop rpms then shift into first oh you have no problem keeping rpms high so you shift into 2nd again and either A break the tranny or B the driveshaft.
Why do manual drivers have to go out of their way and say that they drive with 3 pedals and change gears with a shift. You can enjoy cars and still drive an automatic...
l love these shifters, so much better than the + and - where is takes a million years to shift. of course full manual would be better, but l don't mind these.

I once raced someone who drove his automatic car by using the low gears for shifting... that night he lost control and flipped his car over a curb.
As Long As You Put A Shift Kit And Heavy Duty Clutches Your Trans Will Be Good
I love manuals and all cars i ever had were stick shifts, its cuz its more fun and makes you feel like one with the car and is easier to fix and will always be superior to all car enthusiasts like me❤️ automatics are good too but not as much fun as manuals and have more disadvantages and are used less by car enthusiasts
That's cool. I need to try that with my car whenever I get one
Do you let off the gas completely or just spightly
I do it with my Lincoln markvIII and my Suzuki SX4 NO PROB YOUR A GOOD DRIVER
why are so many people giving him shit?driving manually helps when your driving uphill or pulling a trailor
i thought the numbers meant it wouldn't go higher than that gear?
like for example if it was in 3rd gear (set with 3) it wouldn't go to 4th, only 1 2 and 3
edit: so i just realized that he was using it to shift up "faster", but he also puts it in neutral when stopping, wouldn't it just shift itself down? sorry for the dumb first part lol i wasnt thinking
Turn on your towning thing it will pull harder .
CRIS CATANO your an idiot
Koalafications4Dayz 😂😂
Yeah put it into r for race mode
Koalafications4Dayz you're*
Those are not gears, those are ratios for traction control, to keep the vechicle steady on icy roads, hill starts or downhill. It doesn't just change gears, it recalibrates what the ECU feels safe, so if you keep switching them, that will fuck the transmission up as the ECU will keep reacting.
smack1289 this is the dumbest comment I think I have ever seen
WHAT vehicle is THAT?!It sounds INSANE when you floor it 😱😱
A truck with a v8
As a man with a-many gm transmission in the collection for when I break them,
You should preach this to the older Trans guys.... older floor shift cars...
Modern transmission internals work off the computer and shift digitally.
If you want different shift points get a tunable computer or tool to tune if applicable.
I just watched this video for the second time, and I just realized... thats Huntsville.
Slim Reaper what all did you do to your truck sir I have an 08 Silverado and I want my truck to sound as good as yours!! Please let me know!
trans temp went from mid 70 to 100+ thats wild
nice truck man! sounds exactly like mine when I have it in 1st.
Him "k say I'm Rollin with a guy and he wants to do a 30"🤣
you will fuck up yours shifting like that that's why it automatic it does it for you
Good way to blow it up am i wrong? The increased rpms in 1 2 3 cant be good for it considering those are for increased torque on hills and stuff made fore offroad and low speeds not to mention the wear on the trans?
Truck sounds awesome. Do you have an exhaust?
what kind of exhaust do you have? really like the sound
Best solution:
Get a stick
what kind? wood?
MikeTheLegend oak wood
When you really want a manual truck..
I literally scrolled and one of the recommendations vids caption was “how to replace a transmission “😭
Please don't do this to your transmissions people. It will shorten the life of them. If you want to do this then it requires modifications to handle it.
1 and 2 are made for towing and hills, snow/ice. Check your manual and it will tell you.
Those gears aren’t for manual it’s for towing stuff and the heavier the thing your towing is the higher you put it to give it more torque
I have a 1980 f150 and I shift it manually in the winter.
For everyone saying this is bad for the transmission, ITS NOT!!
Educate yourselves first.
I put my Tahoe in 2 until bangs the limiter than I go into D 😂 1 is a waste of time
You don't down shift? When coming to a stop down shift and brake. That's what I do at least.
How you in 3rd gear and your going 30mph 😂😂😂
You look so cool doing whatever you are doing
Why do manual drivers have to go out of their way and say that they drive with 3 pedals and change gears with a shift. You can enjoy cars and still drive an automatic...
This makes me cringe harder than jared from subway
I have always wondered if that was ok for the drivetrain. I think manual shifting is fun, but I don't like the clutch.
is it ok?
Only Semi-automatic transmissions are designed to do this.
Why do most autos have a manualised option then?
l love these shifters, so much better than the + and - where is takes a million years to shift. of course full manual would be better, but l don't mind these.
