Of course, on top of it, they hand you off-routes just when you think you're done (which of course is the only time when your package car will remotely resemble what was depicted here).

I've been a UPS driver for a bit in Germany, before moving on to better jobs. I've never had my van that empty.
I had a rural route, where most of my customers were companies, some were big houses with large lawns and places to just toss the box and carry on driving. It was more driving and less walking. I'd do about 450km a day.Only part I enjoyed was the driving and my van. I had a LWB Mercedes Sprinter automatic with a suspension seat, backup camera, air conditioning and navigation. It was a great van. That thing rode smoother and softer than either of my 2 Mercedes and one of 'em has actual air suspension XD
Also the handle with care label means nothing. I've seen loaders literally kick packages into the back of the van.And everyone laughed when we got a box that said "Internet marketing" or "online development". Those were the sex toys XD

We're not allowed to walk that slow.
"I need you to work with a sense of urgency" is what they say around here.
Fact: They give you so much work that you have no choice but to work with a sense of urgency. Otherwise you'll be looking for addresses in the dark, which is no fun while driving a vehicle that size, fyi.
Supervisors expect you to memorize an entire route in two to three days (which consists of 150-200 stops or more depending on the time of year) without using a gps. And they expect you to complete your route in 8 hours even if you don't know it.
A lot of us skip our lunch breaks bc there's no telling what time we could get home..
It's no wonder I hear so many people bitch about ups drivers. We're only human and can only take so much bs before we get grumpy.
P.s. Some of you people need to work on your packaging skills. One little, single walled, corrugated cardboard box with two peices of tape and no filling is not going to hold an alternator very well.

Shortly before I started driving, some big wigs came in to implement the car wash program. They literally expect people to wash an entire package car inside and out in 10 minutes. 10!!
That's spraying and scrubbing the outside. Mirrors, tires, windows, grill, bumpers and all. Along with squeegeeing the inside widows, washing the dash, steering wheel, speedometer and such, sweeping the floor. Then washing the shelves and sweeping out the floor in the back. One person, 10 minutes!! It's ridiculous!!

    • @TigerBalm9000
      @TigerBalm9000 5 лет назад

From a 5 year UPS driver to you, I'm going to be honest and straight.
It's a hard and intense job. Package car don't ever look like the one in the video. It's packed front to back and all the way up top.
I average about 250 to 270 stops with about 400 to 420 pieces a day.
There are time commitments to make such as NDA and Savers. It's always a race against time.
On the positive side, money is good if you make it past your probationary period without crashing anything. 4 years seems like a long time but you'll be there in no time.
Currently, salary at the 4 year mark is roughly $36 /hr before this new contract. Do the math, think about your expectancy versus reality.
Hope that helps. As I said, it's about as honest as I can put it without taking sides.

The probationary period consists of 30 working days. In this period, you are required to perform above top notch without crashing or striking anything with your vehicle. During this period, you are expected to output 110% performance level while maintaining 110% safety for yourself and the general public.
My best suggestion for you is this: Be organized. Things are quite a bit easier when you don't have to search, burning up time you don't have. Speed will come later.
I hope this helps. It is a hard job but it's only as hard as you make it.
